HOW  IT  WORKS:    Backstreet  Academy  is  an  online  travel  portal  with  a  presence  in  8  Asian  ci7es  that  use  the  knowledge  of  locals  to  provide  one-­‐of-­‐a-­‐kind  travel  i7neraries  and  ac7vi7es  to  tourists.      They  believe  that  connec7ng  with  locals  during  travel  is  the  best  way  to  immerse  yourself  in  the  culture  of  any  city,  especially  through  making  memorable  human  connec7ons.    

WHO  IT  HELPS:    Local  craAsmen  and  ar7sts  from  developing  ci7es  earn  addi7onal  income  and  get  the  recogni7on  they  deserve  for  their  skills  by  being  trained  as  Backstreet  Academy  Hosts.    By  working  with  several  NGOs  and    disadvantaged  communi7es,  these  individuals  are  carefully  selected  and  trained  to  give  them  the  ability  to  beFer  access  and  profit  from  the  tourism  market.

HOW  IT  WORKS    Social  Cops  recruits  ci7zens  to  act  as  "human  sensors"  around  India's  capital  to  improve  social  issues  by  tracking  and  monitoring  data  on  a  real  7me  basis  in  the  remotest  parts  of  India  to  power  decision  making.    From  street  ligh7ng  to  public  bathrooms  to  food  quality  at  schools,  their  mobile  plaPorm  enables  more  ci7zens  and  NGOs  to  get  involved  in  their  respec7ve  ci7es.  

WHO  IT  HELPS:    Municipal  and  community  issues  in  developing  ci7es  in  India  such  as  public  infrastructure  and  access  to  services.  Efforts  include  geTng  ci7zens  to  rate  cleanliness  on  streets  all  the  way  to  crea7ng  public  worker  reward  systems.  They  have  even  tracked  pa7ent  misconcep7ons  regarding  cervical  cancer  and  adherence  to  medica7on  in  pregnant  women  to  aid  resource  alloca7on  in  healthcare.

HOW  IT  WORKS:    The  Dorsal  Effect  advocates  responsible  tourism,  giving  travellers  a  chance  to  experience  the  beau7ful  island  of  Lombok  through  various  ac7vi7es  that  contribute  towards  Marine  Conserva7on.  Tourists  ac7vi7es  include  snorkeling  trips,  beach  clean  ups  and  educa7on  and  engagement  of  both  local  community  and  the  tourists.  

WHO  IT  HELPS:    Local  communi7es  in  Lombok  and  the  sustainability  of  its  marine  life  and  beaches.  The  Dorsal  Effect’s  mission  is  to  educate  and  convert  local  shark  fishermen  by  providing  them  jobs  that  escort  tourist  on  snorkeling  trips  as  opposed  to  partaking  in  the  hun7ng  and  selling  of  sharks  for  their  fins.
