HOUSE FOR A COLLECTOR: an ink-wash bamboo artist

This residential house is designed as a permanent living and working space for an artist who both collects and paints ink-wash bamboo paintings. The design embraces two concepts: connection of the interior with the exterior and functionality - the house itself promoting inspiration in the artist.

The materiality, form, and program of the house establish axes which in turn direct circulation, inciting certain experiences that reflect the design concepts starting from the outside of the house to the inside.

As an exploration of minimalism, the Panel House proposes a 40m3 dwelling for one to two people in a tropical area. Prefabricated structural elements are assembled together to form an exo-skeletal frame, leaving the ceiling, floor, and walls to be customized by the occupant according to the function of the space.

INSTALLATION: peek-a-boo!

Playing on human curiosity and the sense of sight, this installation personifies and links five arbitrary objects through an interactive game of peek-a-boo with passerbys.

In the middle of a wide open space, your line of sight is interrupted by a plane of white. Through the voids, you see five objects teasingly peeking out, challenging you to guess what it is. Highly curious, you are lured to the other side, where the objects are finally revealed.

SKYLINE RESIDENCES 1b design studio | donald mckay | april 2012

Skyline Residences is a high-density infill settlement in the suburban neighbourhood of Churchill Park, Cambridge, Ontario, increasing the total net area of the allotted land by 120%. Four different sized homes, ranging from 49m2 to 110m2 are arranged in a seemingly randomized composition, creating a unique view along the horizon. Yet, this arrangment not only preserves the view of the original houses, but embodies the circulation of the settlement as well as the outdoor space of each unit.
