Welcome to our October issue o Aquaculture Scoop.

In this issue we look at Nets and cages and give you an insight into someup-coming events or you to consider.

In Trondheim, Norway the worlds largest aquaculture trade

show AquaNor took place rom August 13 16. Attended by 480

exhibitors, with over 18,500 visitors rom 65 countries. NISA Media wasthere at the show at stand V620, to meet companies rom all over the

world involved in the aquaculture industry.

Our news editor Martin Little said the show was a huge success, with

companies such as BECK Engineerings who won the Aqua Nor innovation

award at the exhibition, with their Stingray project a revolutionary newtechnique or dealing with sea lice using laser technology.

He visited many o the exhibitors, seeing the innovations that are taking

place within the aquaculture industry rom copper netting to mini subs.

The exhibition was staged over a large area comprising o ve largehalls on two levels, and an outdoor area. He would like to thank all the

exhibitors he met with over the our-day period with special thanks

to Fiskeriportalen, Damen Shipyards, Aquastructures AS and Gazelle

    Technology AS.

We look orward to returning to Aqua Nor in 2015, so until then we wish allthe companies we met with and those we did not all the success or the

    uture.

Tilapia is a cheap source o protein and popular ood shthat has been pond armed or thousands o years. Forinstance the Ancient Egyptians armed tilapias along the

Nile. Today, tilapia arming is becoming popular around the

    world.

Cage arming o tilapia makes it possible in bodies o

water where draining and seining or harvesting would be

dicult or impossible. Cages are or instance utilized in

lakes, large reservoirs and rivers. They are also a good

alternative or estuaries and coastal embayments, and have

been successully used or arming tilapia in cooling water

discharge canals. The cages consist o mesh in order to

let the water circulate reely. Tilapia are among the most

suitable shes or sh Cage arming.

    Savanna Streams, (an Aquacultural Business Endeavour;

rom production o quality seeds, pond and cage culture, eed manuacturing, EM (eective microorganism)

production and extending technical support) are promoting

Low Volume High Density (LVHD) Cage arming o Tilapia to

benet the small scale armers, and village people to raise

their own sh in Zambia. To make low cost protein source

    available/accessible or the villagers.

Photo Caption: Savanna Streams LVHD Demonstration farmin Lake Kariba, Gwena, Siavonga, Zambia

What is LVHD sh cages? Low Volume High Density sh

cages are compact cage with a volume ranges rom one

cubic meter to 30 cubic meters, and can yield up to 100

kilograms o sh per cubic meter. LVHD sh cage arming

was introduced in China in 1991, with remarkable success.

Photo Caption: The author with his reared tilapia

The rame can either be made o HDPE pipe (in our case),

bamboo, wood or steel bars, or which is cheaper in the

Locality as long as it must be build strong and durable. The

netting materials should be made o nylon net provided with

    predator net at the outside.

    Advantages o LVHD sh cages:

    1. Lower investment cost-ideal or small scale armers.

    2. Easier to transport, set-up, maintenance and harvesting.

    3. Close observation and monitoring o sh growth, health

    and eeding response.

    4. Economical, and easy to manage or sh treatment o

    parasites and diseases.

    5. Due to its compact volume, the water quality is always

good, which promote a higher yield.

    Disadvantages o LVHD cages:

    1. Depend totally to articial eed.

    2. Risk o loss rom poaching, or damage by predators ando bad weather.

    3. Greater risk o disease outbreaks i not manage properly.

    Placement and proper installation;

The LVHD cages should be ideally be placed when the water

current is strong, to maintain good water quality all the time.

Avoid stagnant water, it promotes bad water quality. Do not

place the cages where there is always food.

Maintain a proper spacing between cages. To promote good

water circulation provides at least ve meters space between

cages. The cages must be installed at least 1 meter above

the bottom, to discharge easily the waste o the sh. Installedthem in a straight line conguration perpendicular to the

direction water current to enable the requent and unrestricted

water exchange and maintain the good water quality.

Photo Caption: Proper spacing of LVHD cages

Important reminder: Avoid low temperature. The ideal

temperature to achieve good growth is 28-30C. The growth

will dramatically decline when the temperature goes down to

20C. Tilapia will start to die at 10C Please also note that a

temperature below the optimum range will have a negative

eect on the immune system o the sh. They might survive at

rst, but eventually will be susceptible to diseases.

Battered by extreme weather and sea conditions in a naturalenvironment far more hostile than most other placesFaroese sh farms are built to last, using the most robust

equipment in the world, according to Vnin Aquaculture.

For most sh farmers, a wave height of 8m is rather unthinkable,

not to mention a current strength of 0.8m per second. Now go to

the Faroe Islands and you will soon see that such conditions are

considered nothing out of the ordinarythat is, they are quite

common during winter in certain locations, as measured in 100-

    hour blocks.

Extreme conditions by Faroese standards, is quite a differentthing. Back in November 2011, Landsverk, the Faroese Public

Works Agency, recorded wave heights of up to 19.7m, in fact the

highest ever since records began in the late 1960spossibly the

highest on record anywhere, according to the agency.

Even on that occasion, Faroese sh farms largely suffered no

signicant damages, however one installation had its anchorage

    compromised and started drifting.

I remember this person was nervous about his sh farm which

had shifted position by some 70m in a very short time, said

Signar Poulsen, manager at Vnin Aquaculture. One of his larger

oating frames had snapped and was only being held together

by the net cage itself, which fortunately was made of very strongDyneema netting. So this was an emergency situation and we

had three service teams mobilised to make sure the sh farm

remained safe. It turned out to be intact except for the anchors

used for keeping it in place and the one oating frame which had

been broken in two but was held together by the net cage itself.

We had it all repaired and back in place in a matter of hours.

The anchors were of the most robust kind but they had beendragged across the seabed by the force of the sea with the upper

parts completely deformed. So the person was very happy to

see everything resolved and the installation back in place with no

    damage to the sh farm.

Mr Poulsen added: But such incidents are extremely rare in the

Faroe Islands; I cannot recall any other time that something like

    this happened.

    Three times stronger

Out o a total o 36, two sh arming locations in the Faroe

Islands regularly have currents o up to 0.8m per second while

two other have wave heights o up to 8m. As ar as concerns

equipment, the ability to withstand the elements is a standardrequirement.

Today every aquaculture installation in the Faros uses equipment

rom Vnin Aquaculture, Mr Poulsen said.

Our oerings range rom complete solutions to componentparts, rom net cages to mooring systems and accessories.

Everybody is talking about taking sh arms urther out to sea

and in the Faroes, Im araid we dont have much choice as the

available space in sheltered sea areas is very limited. Fiskaaling,

the Aquaculture Research Station o the Faroes is currentlyconducting a trial at an exposed site with plastic cages with net

cages made o dyneema and nylon. So there is much ocus on

whether our standard equipment will be robust enough or use

oshore. This particular trial site is directly exposed to the NorthAtlantic Ocean. Waves are expected to be up to 14 m.

Vnin Net Cages are usually made rom:

    Nylon

    Polyester

    Polyethylene

    Dyneema

Vnin also oers Net Cages made rom other bres such as Star

    Net.

What separates a Vnin Net Cages rom others is the design o

the net cage. A Vnin Net Cage is designed in particular waywhich enables it to be used at more exposed and shallow sites.

The net cage used at the trial site where waves are expected to

be up to 14 m. is a standard Vnin Net Cage design.

For us to be in a market where there is high competition amongthe producers o net cages and mooring systems, we have to

be innovative and be price competitive. All the producers use

to some extent the same raw materials. This is why we produce

our net cages mainly outside the European Union and develop

our own designs with the sh armers or example in FaroeIslands, Norway and Scotland. This enables us to have low cost

Net Cages with proven quality and proven high perormance Signar Poulsen.

Fish arms are essentially underwater installations and according

to Vnin, their Mooring System outperorms other systems onthe market, much thanks to a unique design that includes a

shock absorbing unction that enables the installations to remain

rmly moored to the seabed while seamlessly withstanding the

    orces o the sea.

Key components in a Vnin Mooring System: the VninPlates, o high grade, acid resistant stainless steel are virtually

maintenance ree and o galvanised steel where we stock plates

up to 150 tonnages breaking strength.

There is no need or using zinc blocks or protecting stainlesssteel, Mr Poulsen said. That on its own is a big money saver

because it takes away the need to make requent underwater

    inspections.

We have 16 servicing departments spread over the whole North

Atlantic Ocean, spanning ve countries. Canada, Greenland,Norway, Faroe Islands and Denmark, where we stock our Vnin

Net Cages and Vnin Mooring Systems.

Vnin Net Cages and Mooring Systems undergo rigorous

quality tests in order to ensure strength and quality is never

compromised. All Vnin products come with certications.

Building on the strength o our shing gear business since 1969,

Vnin has become the preerred supplier or a growing number o

    sh armers across the globe.

The ocus o ProFlex is the complete net treatment solution- cleaning, drying, impregnating and protecting nets or the customers specicdemands.

The research and development has resulted in a water-based antioulingsubstituting the oil based antiouling or more environmental riendly

protection. The existing antioulants are ormulated to extend the

working time or net in the sea as well as high eciency against most

    types o marine growth.

As our customers are acing dierent challenges around the worlddue to dierent environmental conditions, the demand or antiouling

or specic needs has increased, and we have recently presented

FLEXGARD VII-HD - an antiouling highly ecient against hydroids.

The intensive R&D work has also resulted in a net impregnation

-FLEXDIP accepted or ORGANIC sh arming o all species.

And nally, we have seen very good results or our FLEXGARD XI-C onPE-nets. The challenge in the business has been the adhesion to the

PE-nets- but now we have solved this- and recommend our FLEXGARD

XI-C to PE nets as well as other net types- nylon, Dyneema etc.

Latest development in the ProFlex company- is a complete range o

machinery or net service- rom cleaning to antiouling. We evaluate

and analyze the customers situation, advice on how to eliminate the

bottlenecks and solve the specic challenges or our customers.

We oer the net washers suitable or all net sizes and an additionally

separator enabling a separation between the water and the solids- and

the water is ready or re-use. We also oer the net washer in dierent

sizes or the armer doing his own nets but also in larger scale or the net

    service companies.

A drying system ensures that the net is completely dried beore

impregnation or transport and make you independent o the weather

situation and the drying system is also oered in dierent sizes

    customized to the specic needs.

Finally we have agreed with the Norwegian company Stette that ProFlexis their agent outside Norway and the Benelux. The impregnator

produced by Stette operates via vacuum and oers a range o benets

or the customer- less antiouling consumption- fexibility to change

between the products time saving and nally very environmental

riendly compared to traditional way due to a closed system avoidingleaks to environment. So now ProFlex is well prepared to work with the

sh armers and the net service companies on their specic challengesand demands around the world.

Last year AquaTech received an order to supply o twocomplete net cage systems, or the (approx. 30 ha large)mining/dredge lake Trbitz in Brandenburg/Germany, with atotal o 12 cages (each 4,0x4, 0x3,5 m), consisting o 200 m2Maritime Technic pontoons in gras-green (RAL 6010).

The cage nets consist o black polymere covered polyesternet material (MS 20 mm), and are very robust and long lasting. The cover nets, consist o green, rasheled polyethylene netmaterial (MS 20 mm), and act as protection against birds.Beside the nets, solar powered sh eeders (45 l volume)with double gallow-rames were also delivered. In the cages, mainly common carps (Cyprinus carpio) are raised and alsooverwintered there with very low mortality.

The results rom the rst year are promising - one summerold carps with approx. 69 g each where overwintered in thecages under ice. They where eed rom April to October withdryood (40 %RP/24 % RF) and grown in 195 days, with aood conversion rate o just 1,17 to a nal weight o 558 g each

(daily growth rate 1,08 %). The nal stocking density was about21 kg/m3 and the total mortality below 0,7 %. The Instituteo Inland Fisheries, Potsdam-Sacrow, will guide the systemscientically.

Also this year AquaTech received an order to supply a net cagesystem, or a traditional pond arm in Hungary, with our cages(each 4,0x4, 0x2,0 m), consisting o 57 m2 Maritime Technicpontoons in gras-green (RAL 6010). The cage nets itsel, consist o black, polymere covered polyester net material (MS20 mm), and are very robust and long lasting. Beside the nets, solar powered sh eeders (45 l volume) were also delivered. Inthe cages, mainly common carps (Cyprinus carpio) are raisedand overwintered. In this way, the heavy sh losses due topredation o cormorants (Phalacrocorax carbo) in the natural

ponds can be reduced or avoided. Additional net cage systemswith 10 cages (each 5,0x5, 0x2,0 m), consisting o 160 m2Maritime Technic pontoons in gras- green (RAL 6010), havebeen installed this year. More inormation at www.aqua-tech.eu
