THE Malaysian Amateur Volleyball Association (MAVA) league has been revived after 13 years as part of the association's effort to promote the sport in smaller towns and now is known as 1Malaysia Volleyball League.MAVA vice president Azahari Sairin said the league was made possible through an injection of funds and support from Mizuno and Mikasa, two sponsors of the association for many years. He said that "The focus on the league will be grassroots development and the venues selected will include towns like Mentakab and Batu Pahat.

"By organising the league in smaller towns, we hope to promote the sport to the grassroots where quality tournaments are lacking," Azahari told reporters at the launch of the event at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil yesterday.

Azahari said the league, which was introduced in 1993 but stopped in 1998 due to the global financial crisis, will also be used to identify players for November's Sea Games in Indonesia.

He said this year eight men's teams and five women's teams will play in the league which will use a 'round-robin' format.

The first event will be held at Sekolah Tinggi Jenis Kebangsaan Cina Jalan Labuh, Batu Pahat, Johor on July 9-10, followed by Kolej Han Chiang Indoor Stadium, Penang (July 16-17), Dewan Majlis Bandaran Mentakab, Pahang (July 23-24) and Cheras Badminton Stadium, Kuala Lumpur (July 29-31).

The men's teams comprise Bukit Jalil Sports School (BJSS), Tunku Mahkota Ismail Sports School, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, Kelab Sukan Segamat, Perlis, Armed Forces (ATM), Majlis Bandaraya Shah Alam and Sibu, while the women's league will have BJSS, E-Globex Sdn Bhd, PDT Pahang, Sibu and ATM. -- Bernama

Reflections

What did I learn from this course?

During this volleyball course, I had learn to be more punctual to attend any classes or activities.

This is because during the volleyball course, we need to be there on time and finally we practice

to be punctual. Next, from this volleyball course, I had learned many new skill such as basic

serving skill, spiking skill, digging skill and many more. With this, I manage to develop new

skill. Moreover, after joining this volleyball course, I understand the important of joining sport

activities. Before this I don’t take part in any sport activities but now I found out that sport is

very interesting. Furthermore, after joining this course I found out that teamwork is very

important among ourselves. Teamwork is very important especially during competition or

playing in a group. With this, there is trust between our team mate. Finally, I also find out that

playing volley games provide us healthy lifestyle.

What should I do to further develop my soft skills and technical skills?

To further develop my soft skill and technical skill, I should practice more during free time. This

is because practice make perfect. Other than that, I would also go for jogging to practice my

stamina. This is because in volleyball game, it required a lot of running and therefore I need to

maintain my stamina in order to be good on it. Besides that, I would also get to know people who

are good in volleyball so that they can teach me new skill and correct me when I did mistake.

Moreover, he can also be my partner to practice. Furthermore, I will also learn to be more

competitive and focus to keep my eyes on that ball when playing volleyball. Finally, I will also

practice more on serve skill because it’s the main skill in volleyball.
