Centre for Research

Advanced Centre for Research in Science

Vision:

Jai Hind College fosters a healthy research environment & students are encouraged to

undertake research through their undergraduate and postgraduate coursework. This has been

channelized into (i) concept oriented research and (ii) outcome oriented research.

The first year and second year undergraduate students are mentored by faculty members in

undertaking research projects to (i) strengthen and reinforce concepts by review of literature,

(ii) design experiments to tackle a research problem (iii) to integrate the use of laboratory

tools in experiment & (iv) to analyze the data obtained to draw inferences and conclusions.

As students come to their final year of graduation, they already have the tools required for

research in the field. Hence they are encouraged to take up research problems which are

outcome oriented and hence they address needs of the society.

Jai Hind College has 19 UG & 4 PG programs and research expanses students of all these

programs. The number & quality of national/international publications, many of which are

co-authored by undergraduate students, are increasing with passing years which reflects on

their involvement in research based learning.

As a college, our endeavor has always been to promote research culture among students of all

streams- science, humanities & commerce and we envision to integrate research into all

programs of study so as to ignite a research temper among our students and also make our

modest efforts to give back to the society.

Strengths:

There are 8 science departments in Jai Hind which out of which 6 offer a UG program and 2

offer UG & PG programs. All departments are actively involved in research activities.

Students across the science departments participate in research conventions & meets like

Avishkaar, Jigyaasa, Konark research meet etc. to present their research work. In an effort to

provide platform to all students to participate and present their work, Jai Hind initiated an in-

house annual science festival, Xplore in 2013 for its students. Experts from different fields

are called to give valuable inputs to students on how they can develop their ideas and projects

to make it more impactful and relevant to the needs of the society. Many student participants

have benefitted from these interactions and hence been able to make representations at the

University Level Avishkaar festival. Ms. VishakaMerude& Ms. Devyani Bhandari

The college is a recipient of DST-FIST grant, through which it has set up a Central

Instrumentation Facility. The facility has instruments like FTIR, HPLC (VWD+RI); DSC;

Spectrofluorophotometer, PCR among others. These instruments have been used to facilitate

the research work in college. In March 2018, the first Newsletter of CIF, detailing the

activities (research, training & workshops) conducted using the facility was released. The

biannual newsletter is expected to contain all the student activities to promote research in

sciences.

Page 48: ANNEXURES 2017-18

Road Map& Outcomes:

The college envisages to establish an Advanced Centre for Research by bringing more

instrumental facilities for the students to carry out their research work. An in-house facility

like this will bring a new dimension to the existing level of research work and we are

confident that it will also open up more number of collaborations with other premiere

institutes like TIFR, BARC etc. in terms of student internships and exchange to carry forward

their projects built up in their host institution.

The Rotaract Club of Jai Hind College completed 23 glorious years and has seen the

introduction and success of so many new activities and events of diverse kinds with different

objectives. Under the leadership of the PAC members PareeshaVajani, PuranChoudhary,

HelliChheda, and LavinaJhangianiled by our President Sanjana Felix, we have accomplished

so much as a club.

Our first great eight event this year was TheZodiak 2017 that saw the participation of many

Rotaract Clubs from around the city. The competitions of this fest were conducted under the

theme ‘The Odyssey of Carnivals’. It was a huge success and was definitely enjoyed by both,

the participants and the OC members.

Silent Saturdays came back this year and was received with much love by every member as

we helped a slum in Agripada for four weeks and each had a cause, namely Health,

Education, Hunger and Safety. Distribution of sanitary napkins, toothbrushes, combs,

stationery items, etc., were followed by serving of cooked meals once a day for a whole week

and a self -defence workshop.

Moreover, TWO toilets were built under the cause of Health in a school in Shahpur.

Word War I, an interschool championship, involved the participation of schools from all over

the city that were competing for the Grand Trophy. It consisted of 5 different rounds

preceding the Grand Quiz, that tested the contestants on various parameters.

Page 60: ANNEXURES 2017-18

The last of the Great 8 events to have taken place so far, was Amazing Race. Numerous

teams took part in a day long scavenger hunt, all over Mumbai. From bizarre tasks to clues

that made one rack their brains, Amazing Race definitely made everybody’s hearts race with

thrill.

The most awaited events of our club are in their way. 'Cheekh' is a flash mob for women

empowerment and is one of the biggest events conducted by our club. We, as members,

perform plays and dances to create awareness.

'The Streets' is a dancing battle which is a sensation among the youngsters. 'Spotlight' is a

fashion show for people representing different sections of the society. We’ve had cancer,

autism and thalassemia patients walk the ramp in some years.

Aparthotel from these flagship events, we keep organizing smaller events around college to

keep the students engaged and we wish to keep on doing so to our full capacity!

Entrepreneurship Cell report

The Entrepreneurship Cell is a student body run by some zealous students of Jai Hind

College that aims to nourish entrepreneurship culture among students. E-Cell was

inaugurated in December 2007 as a member of the National Entrepreneurship Network,

founded in 2003 by the Wadhwani Foundation.

Page 74: ANNEXURES 2017-18

E-Cell helps aspiring entrepreneurs to set up their own firms by providing them guidance&

mentorship by hosting numerous workshops, speaker sessions, competitions and supporting

them by providing a platform to associate with sponsors, investors & young entrepreneurs.

E-Cell works to bring about an entrepreneurial mind-set in the students and support the

creativity in them. Here as an entrepreneur we learn to create, take risk and live our dream.

The workstyle of E-cell is to unwrap the entrepreneur& intrapreneur in every member of the

Cell.

We started off with inauguration and instillation ceremony held in Jai Hind college

auditorium on 31st July 2017. It included the keynote addressed by the Director of World

Trade Centre as well as the CEO of Dan Network, inspiring & enlightening the 500 audience

on the importance of entrepreneurship and intrapreneurship along with insightful speeches by

the budding entrepreneurs of Jai Hind College.

Guestlecture: Prof. ShamishDalal of S.P. Jain Global Institute of Management & Research

conducted asession loaded with wit and humour giving a strong message to the youth to

become job givers rather than takers.

Entrepreneurship course: A very good opportunity to our budding and aspiring

entrepreneurs was provided by giving them an insight into the real “entrepreneurial world”. A

3-day workshop on entrepreneurship was organised to teach our members about the different

aspects of business starting from idea generation, opportunity evaluation, business

environment analysis, preparing a strong business model, VC pitch, entrepreneurial case

studies and more. It was a full package of knowledge and fun.

Bootcamp: this activity proved to be a very good platform for all those who had a business

idea but no platform to execute it. Students could come here and pitch their business ideas

and then work in team to make a business model. Not only did it give opportunity to all those

who had an idea but other members too who played an equally important part in preparing the

business model. 3 renowned and successful entrepreneurs acted as judges giving them the

much needed inputs required for building a strong business model.

JAI HIND Mandi: A Field Sales Campaign for teaching personal Selling Skills through the

Experiential Approach.

Page 75: ANNEXURES 2017-18

130 students participated in this social entrepreneurship event and the teams were given a

bag of products from 3 NGOs to sell in the surrounding area and the profits given to the

respective NGOs. This event was graced by Inspector Vilas Gangwale, the President

Gallantry award recipient who also distributed the prizes.

Writing a business plan: The activities of past 8 months had many students ideating and

forming business models which had to be translated into a more structured and concrete

proposal to get started. Reni Pandhya a decade old highly successful entrepreneur and

alumnus of S.P. Jain led the students through the steps of writing a business plan. Her

intensive research and inputs was applauded by the audience and her one- on- one mentoring

with the students provided great value.

Along with the student participation and active involvement, the faculty remain constantly

involved in mentoring the budding entrepreneurs, representing as guest faculty in different

institutions by way of jury, trainers, resource persons and mentors.

Successful participation of our students in inter-collegiate entrepreneurship events has always

been the highlight of the E-Cell.

We continue to be the best practice of Jai Hind College and strive to make Entrepreneurship

“A WAY OF LIFE” at our institution.

Best Practices

Title of Practice: Wellness Ambassadors

The context: An idea for which the time has come. Youth relate to youth best. Youth are

sensitive and require timely help to tide over mental health issues. JaiHind students feel the

need to support their peers in emotional distress an organised and timely manner.

The practise: To take this forward, Wellness Cell collaborated with Samaritans Mumbai

(emotional distress helpline) to train our students on “Mentorship”. Students were imparted

training on mentoring their peers and providing active listening and support. The short listed

students were then given intensive training to become “Wellness Ambassadors” who would

be available as the first link for emotional distress amongst students.

Evidence of success: Jai Hind is proud to be the only college in India to have done this where

trained students would provide emotional first aid to their peers and in serious cases refer to

the college Counsellor or the Samaritans helpline.

Problems: The wellness ambassadors are short on experience so there is a challenge that

their help be adequate. Serious cases can only be referred to the counselor and no one can be

compelled to seek help. Helping Skills need regular practise and there may not be enough

time to offer full time help.

Future: The future is challenging both for the ambassador and the trainers. The students are

transient. A fresh team needs to be trained regularly. The ambassadors also gain valuable

experience for their future careers and life in general

.College Social Responsibility: CSR

Page 101: ANNEXURES 2017-18

Context: Jai Hind students and teachers have always been extending their commitment to the

wellbeing of society. The college has a very strong spirit of sharing and caring.

The practise: Cells /societies such as NSS, CSR, NEN, Gymkhana, WDC, Extension

Committee, Wellness Cell, RPC, Rotaract Club, Departmental fests like Talaash, Entourage,

Detour, conduct CSR activities.

Evidence of success: This year’s highlights :

SYBMS-For Business Ethics and corporate governance the students were asked to visit

certain old age homes & orphanages and after collecting information a report was sent to few

companies for support under CSR. With this the students were sensitized and an effort was

made to make a responsible citizen

Waste management efforts in association with BMC

Road safety initiatives by distributing printed bills on road safety

Bachatghat fair to promote and motivate women from marginalised backgrounds

Gymkhana took up the cause of breast cancer awareness and spread awareness in nearby

schools and locality

History department held a gender sensitisation workshop on declining sex ratio in

Maharashtra in collaboration with pune university

Problems: CSR efforts are relatively problem free. The challenge is to keep doing more and

systematise the efforts.

Future:Jaihindites want to continue to contribute to the larger society whole heartedly. Sky is

the limit.
