Why do we need Athletics 365? There is some great work and good practice happening

across the country and this we need to build upon.

There is also a range of challenges that face grass roots athletics, these include:

Inconsistent delivery of child development activities across England;

Coaches with the least experience working with children; Athletes are specialising too early; Too much focus on outcome (i.e. distance jumped or time

run) rather than on Process (i.e. technique when running or jumping);

Groups based on chronological age not developmental stage.

Every athlete is different

Page 7: ANI Coaching Conference 365 Presentation

Current SituationExcessive ratios of coach to athlete; Lack of volunteers; Junior sections have limited areas to use due to senior

groups; Lacks structure and excitement ;Losing out to other sports;Support resources in the past for junior club sections have

been too confusing and there are too many of them.

Athletics 365 sets out to address the above issues while building on the existing good practice

So what do clubs and coaches think of

Athletics 365?

Page 20: ANI Coaching Conference 365 Presentation

“All the young athletes engage very quickly and

enthusiastically to the structure of 365 and its progression through the

levels” Bedford and County AC

Page 21: ANI Coaching Conference 365 Presentation

“The philosophy and structure in many ways is very similar to what is already being delivered within

existing groups. It however is slightly broader, more formal in it’s

coverage, and has area like core strength, lifestyle & behaviour that were not previously fully covered”

Bedford and County AC

Page 22: ANI Coaching Conference 365 Presentation

“The club is very pleased with the Athletics 365 model and the way the

pilot has worked out and the Academy will become a long term part of the

club. We are sure that we have provided a long term sustainable

model to progress our young athletes and are also sure that the club itself will benefit long term by producing

more competent athletes” Wreake Academy

Page 23: ANI Coaching Conference 365 Presentation

UKA Level 2“The children have enjoyed the various tasks through Athletics 365, are keen to keep having a go to improve, and get up

to the next level which is great, as it is getting them enthusiastic about the sport. The best part about it is the

increases in skills, which may not have been properly taught which can help

through any sport they may wish to do” North of Tyne Athletics Network

Page 24: ANI Coaching Conference 365 Presentation

UKA Level 2“The 365 course has been fantastic in encouraging people

in getting over initial fears of coaching activity to children when they are unsure of the

activity or have not done them before”

North of Tyne Athletics Network

Page 25: ANI Coaching Conference 365 Presentation

UKA Level 2“the key thing for a young athletes is they get a chance

to try everything...that all rounded approach can make

a stronger, all-rounded athlete”

Paula Radcliffe

Page 26: ANI Coaching Conference 365 Presentation

UKA Level 2“This is not necessarily about Athletics, this is about athleticism. To be David Beckham or Roger Federer you have to be able to run quickly;

you have to have hand eye coordination; you have got to be

strong; you have got to be supple and that's the basis of track and field”

Seb Coe
