So far 12 known cases of dog poisoning have been reported and of these, nine dogs have died. If you suspect your dog has been poi- soned, keep any suspicious looking food for testing as evidence. At this stage attempts will be made to have an autopsy done on one of the animals to determine what poison was used. In desperation an emergency meeting was scheduled for Sunday andtheDoonsideCrimeWatchwases- tablished. The group will link up with the Com- munity Crime Policing Forum (CCPO) and veterinarians in the area. Ronel Fuhry, whose dog was poisoned, says her dog vomited up pieces of a leg bone and inside the marrow was a reddish pellet, like rat poison and brown pellets that looked like rabbit food. Typical symptoms in animals that have been poisoned include vomiting (yellowish water), diarrhoea, crying, shaking, seizures and haemorrhaging. In many cases vets originally thought it to be Parvo virus, “a viral disease, manifested by diarrhoea, often bloody vomiting and loss of appetite, depression, fever and sometimes death”. The difference is that seizures are not a symp- tom of Parvo. Marklen Matthew’s Labrador puppy, Lady, was poisoned last Wednesday but survived. “Lady had spasms and then she collapsed. I tried water and eventually force-fed her with milk. I can only guess that I caught it early and that the milk neutralised the poison,” he says. Matthew became aware that several dogs had died in the area and got in contact with Doonside resident Stacey Quarony to spread the word on social media. On Friday afternoon, while the Fever interviewed her, her Basset puppy suddenly be- came ill. The puppy had the typical swollen and hard stomach, signs of poisoning, and Quarony rushed him to the vet, Dr Van Heerden’s rooms. Despite being treated for poisoning and kept on a drip for most of the day, he died on Saturday. The community is concerned that the poison- ings might be part of an organised crime syndicate, plotting to commit other crimes such as housebreaking. Everyone is urged to be on the lookout and re- port unusual incidents to the Amanzimtoti SPCA on 031 904 2424/5 and speak to Michelle Hannan. >> The poisoning of dogs has become a serious issue in Doonside over the past few weeks PHOTO: TANIA SANDBERG Doonside resident Stacey Quarony with the poisoned Labrador pup, Lady, that survived. Caravan park residents need assistance

SINCEWinklespruitCaravanParkownerMickey Stapelberg died in2014, the some 30 families, who

call the park home, have been living inuncertainty regarding the park’s andtheir future.

In January, the executors informedresidents of their intended sale of theproperty, following which residentswould be given a 60-day window toseek alternative accommodation.

We have continuously kept close li-aisonwith theexecutor’smanagementagent to ensure that arreared munici-pal accounts are settled and essentialservices remainavailable to residents,

irrespective that several have alreadymoved to alternative locations.

Following the confirmation of sale, residents were served notice on 10February, to vacate the park within60 days from 1 March.

While several care groupsand indi-viduals continue to render assistance,thecoreproblemremainsalternateac-commodationcome1Mayandthe ina-bility of the majority of residents tocommit to deposits, so often requiredby letting agents and/or landlords.

Being that we have been functionalintheparkforseveralyearsweareableto confirm that, irrespective of a few

roughdiamonds, thegroupessentiallycomprises pensioners, single-parenthouseholds, disability grantees andfamilies who are barely able to makeends meet or afford market-relatedrentals.

An appeal ismade to residentswhoare in a position to negotiate rentalagreements without deposit, or whocanaccommodateforashortperiod, orwhoareprepared to adopt someof thepets, to contact me on [email protected]

Choosing the best schoolfor you child is vital

>> A vital consideration isto listen to what your childwants

ONEof thebiggestmistakesonecanmakewhen choosing a new school for yourchild, is not making an informed deci-

sion.Listen to recommendation of your child’s

current teachers, attend open days and talk toother parents. Ask specific questions such aswhat issuestheyhavehadtodealwithandhowit was dealt with, advises a local pre-primaryschool principal.

“Itisalsoimportanttoknowyourchild, whattheirstrengthsare.Aretheygoodatacademicsor sport or culturally inclined. It is also not tosay if your one child was happy at a particularschool, it would be the same for all your chil-dren, every child is unique,” she says.

One should consider childrenwith learningdifficulties,somemain-streamschoolsarebet-ter equipped to deal with learning difficulties.A starting point for your decision would be tomake a list ofwhat you, as a parent, need fromthe school andwhat your child’s requirements

are.Lookatwhattheschooloffers,someschool’s

pridethemselvesonbeingmoretechnologyad-vanced, while for others interaction with chil-dren is important.

The education expert says a school shouldnotbecomesotechnical that itcreatesabarrierbetweenpupils and teachers. Teachers shouldget to know the heart of a child. “By the sametoken it is important to be vigilant if your childisexperiencingproblemsandaddress these is-sues with teachers,” she adds.

Another vital consideration is to listen towhat your childwants anddiscuss thebest op-tion.

“The benefit of a local school is that you, asparent, already know other parents and whoyour child is interacting with. You are familiarwiththeproblemsinyourcommunityandhavethe benefit of not having to travel. The big cityschools offer more in terms of curriculum andare in a position to employ highly qualifiedteachers.

If you are looking at a high school, remem-ber not to look at only Grade 8, but look at thesubject selection for Grade 10.

“Ask the schoolwhat is procedure is if therearenotenoughpupilstakingaspecificsubject,”the education expert says.

VISIE tesame met die waagmoed omdit deur te voer bring lewensvervu-lling, het Willie Botha, stigter van

Leadership Enrichment and Development(Lead) Donderdag tydens Durban Sake-kamer se vergadering op 12 Februariegesê.

In diemeeste gevalle is geduld be-langrikerasaksie.Visiehet‘nvormingstyd-perk,” sê hy.

Omstandighede plaas en berei jou voorom jou visie te kan bereik.

“Die tydtussendieontstaanvanjouvisieendievevullingvan jouvisie isdiewoestyn-periode.As jy teugkyknadie visie se vervu-llingsalhierdieperiodesinmaak,”sêBotha.
