1 AlHuda International School Primary Section Summer Break Homework 2013-2014 Dear parents, keep your children engaged during the summer break with academics by following these, thoughtfully planned, summer break homework tasks. Please remember Use assignment sheets/A4 paper for the summer break home work. The written homework should be presented with date and margin. The presentation of the work reflects the child’s attitude towards work. English Task 1: Reading Homework 1. Reading Corner 2. Story books to read The more you read the better you get! Over the summer holidays make a time table especially for reading. Make sure you sit down at your reading time, in a quiet place everyday. Spend at least 25 minutes just for reading. You can read many different things like; books, magazines, newspapers and leaflets. Remember to log the books you read. Stories from the Quran Prophet Stories (Goodward, Learning Roots and Darrusalaam Publishers recommended) Oxford Reading Tree; Trunk Stories Oxford Owl (website) Selected fiction by Roald Dahl Selected fiction By Nancy Drew (Please be sure to read the blurb before purchasing fiction to ensure adequate content for your children). Hiba Kidz magazines Afaq Magazines (Non-Fiction) 3. Reading scrap Books 4. Reading Tasks (for every story you read) Reading is not just about reading books; it’s about being able to read everything you see. For example; magazines, newspapers, leaflets, menus, road signs, banners etc. So next time you see something you were able to read, come home and draw it in your scrap book. If you were able to pick something up like a menu, leaflet or ticket; stick it in your scrap book. Discuss your findings with your parents. Write down in your scrap books; Who was your favorite character and why? Retell the story in your own words. What problems did the characters face in the story and how did they solve the problems? What was your favorite part of the story? What would you like to ask the characters? Did you like the story or not? 5. Word Detective 6. I am an author Whenever you read; you will always find words which you don’t understand. So, keep jotting them down in your scrap book and when you get the chance discuss the words with your parents. Try making sentences with these words too! Nouns are the name of a person or place, adjectives are describing words and verbs are action/ doing words. After reading your story, try recalling these words and jot them down. You’ve worked really hard all summer, reading stories and collecting all that fabulous information. So, Let’s put it all to use. You will be an author and write your own story; Think about all the stories you read and look through the things you have gathered in your scrap book for inspiration. Now, sit and think carefully how to begin your story, what could be the middle and then the end. Think about the moral. Present the story as a book with illustrations. Don’t forget to bring your scrap book and story to school. Grade II
