On February 10th at 15:00 PCV Rachel Worley will

speak about African-American culture and role in mod-

ern day USA. Then UGRAD Alumni Aina Amiralina will

speak about her experience at a US University sur-

rounded by a large African-American population and

friends. Anyone planning on traveling to the USA

should attend this informative and entertaining ses-

sion!

Work & Travel USA 2011

Work & Travel USA is a popular, government designed cultural exchange program for university students

around the world. Work & Travel offers students the opportunity to experience life in the US as more than

just as tourist. Participants will have the unique chance to go to the US during their summer vacation for 4

months to fill short-term positions with US employers.

Upon completion of their work commitment, participants can discover more of the US by traveling around

the county. This program offers participants the opportunity to make money, improve their English, experi-

ence American culture, meet new friends, explore the US and have the biggest adventure of their life!

Poems may be short and sweet or long and funny (be creative).

Poems may be about love or Valentine’s Day.

You may use any style of poem you like.

It’s your poem, write whatever you want (in English of course)!

AKEAC staff will choose a winner who shows creativity and good

English writing skills.

The winner will be announced during the Valentine’s Day Celebration in English Club at 15:00. The winner

will also be contacted by email or phone if he or she is not present.

IELTS

International English Language Testing System

IELTS is the International English Language Testing System which tests English proficiency around the

world. IELTS is the world’s most popular English testing system. IELTS tests are held in over 500 centers

with tests up to four times a month.

IELTS is available in two test formats:

Academic or General Training. All candidates take the same Listening and Speaking modules but different

Reading and Writing modules.

Listening, Reading and Writing must be completed in one day. However, the Speaking test may be offered

on the same day or up to a week before or after.

IELTS has two versions: Academic and General Training.

The Academic test is for those who want to study at a post-secondary level in an English-speaking coun-

try.

The General Training test is for those who want to do work experience or training programs, secondary

school or move to an English-speaking country. All candidates take the same Listening and Speaking

tests but different Reading and Writing tests.

IELTS Preparation at AKEAC

The course targets students who intend to apply to a university in the UK, Australia and New

Zealand. The course is offered once every 2 months, and you can sign up at your most convenient

time. A course group is 6-8 students on the average. The course provides overview and practice

of all the sections of the test: listening, reading, writing and speaking. The course is based on the

Academic modules of IELTS but General modules can also be integrated on request.

Scoring

There is no pass or fail in IELTS. Candidates are graded on their performance in the test, using scores from 1

to 9 for each part of the test – Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. Your results from the four parts then

produce an Overall Band Score

Receiving Scores

Your Test Report Form will be posted to you 13 days after your test date. All test centers will post your Test

Report Form to you.

and the University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations

(Cambridge ESOL). International groups of writers contrib-

2. $45.00 Application Fee

3. Proof of English Proficiency (PEP). Many students choose to take exams such as TOEFL or IELTS

4. Official Academic Records (transcripts) and degree certificates for all High Schools and/or Colleges

attended: If the last school of attendance was a college or university, you do not need to submit high school

records. The exception is for students choosing engineering as an undergraduate major.

5. Proof of Finances: F-1 or J-1 visa applicants or holders will also need to submit a completed UNO Finan-

cial Affidavit Form and original bank statement to receive an I-20 or DS-2019.

6. Conditional Admission: Students without Proof of English Proficiency may consider admission into both

the Intensive English Program (ILUNO) and an undergraduate program.

7. School Transfer Form: Students entering UNO who currently have a I-20 or DS-2019 from another U.S.

institution must also submit a School Transfer Form with their application materials.

Article about UNO by current Muskie student and AKEAC Advisor Talgat Ayapbergenov

The first question people usually ask about Omaha – where is it? Frankly speaking I also had no idea before

I received my Muskie placement to University of Nebraska at Omaha (UNO). But thanks to internet I learnt

that this is biggest city on the edge of Nebraska and Iowa. The city’s name comes from Native American

tribe which was originally live here before first colonists’ settled in 1804. Nowadays it’s well planned and

fast developing metropolitan area.

Well, what is Omaha looks like from inside?

According to the recent Forbs article the city ranked #1 as Most Afforda-

ble Places to Live. That’s true: price level is very similar to KZ, excluding

food. As for electronics, cars, clothing and entertainment are even cheap-

er. Although I travelled in the US before and by occasion visited 15 states

(+ Puerto Rico) I didn’t expect to see the spot such resembling Aktobe and

Almaty at the same time. Aktobe - because of hilly landscape and continental climate (probably there is

much more snow than at home this year); and Almaty – by population (1+ million) and because of rectan-

gular intersections of streets and avenues. You really do not need a GPS driving anywhere in Omaha area.

From the minuses - public transportation is poorly developed; you have to properly manage your time to

catch a metro bus ($1.25 one ride). Same thing with car parking on UNO campus, even if you have parking

permit ($65 per semester) it’s not guaranteed you get a spot unless you buy a garage ($80).

What is cool in Omaha?

Five local companies: ConAgra Foods, Union Pacific Co, Peter Kiewit &Sons, Mutual of Omaha, Berkshire

Hathaway are in Fortune 500. Omaha zoo is #1 sightseeing for tourists, the city is

also home for biggest furniture mart in the US, and headquarter for US railroad

ministry. Kids’ orphanage known as Boys Town is another great example of non-

profit project and organization popular in the US

was originally established in Omaha by Father

Flanagan in 30’s of XX century. His grandson

Colin Flanagan worked in Taraz a Peace Corp

Why not all people in Omaha play poker.

Mostly descendants from Germany and Denmark modern Omahans include also Irish, Polish, Lithuanians

and other nations. Faith and religion is still stone corner in families. They do not play cards, they play soccer,

hockey, and of course, American football. To say that very big fans live here means to say nothing. Every

Saturday hundreds of decorated cars overcrowded by colored spectators with flags and tubes move to Lin-

coln, state capital and 50,000 venue for the football battles. I saw what happened there by TV – and think

it’s better not to cross road in front of these guys if their team failed. And if they won, too.

U-N-O stands not only for popular card game

Approx. 10,000 students attend UNO every day. College of Public Affairs at UNO rated as #3 nationwide

among public schools. Many professors from our department teach only part-time as they work in other

business or non-profit sector. Such practitioners include Paul Strawhecker (well known professional, who

helped to accumulate $200 million by fundraising) or Thomas Gouttierre, Dean of International Studies and

Director of the largest Center for Afghanistan Studies in the US, who spent 10 years abroad and speaks in 8

languages.

Campus Internationalization

More than 1300 international students from 100 countries

study at UNO today. The biggest part is from Saudi Arabia, Chi-

na and Korea. Very few from Central Asia and the only one is

from Kazakhstan. Guess who? ;) All students are welcome to

participate at any of 120 student’s clubs and associations on

campus, including popular Conversational Club (to practice English for foreigners) and out-door activity eve-

ry week – students sign up for hockey game, farm, museum visit, or cinema trip. All these activities orga-

nized by Department of International Students Services and are free of charge.

Also everyone can enjoy excellent sport facility at HPER building with fashionable up-to-date equipment and

Olympic size swimming pool. By the way UNO women swimming team is #5 in nation. You may train for free

at Climbing Rock, Dance Lab, Soccer Club, Cycling, Zumba, Yoga classes and many others.

Come to Omaha! You will feel like at home but in America;)

You may hear about Omaha’s prophet – Warren Buffet, famous billionaire and philanthropist who live in

Omaha and donate significant amounts for the public good of citizens and community. This is real example

of a person who makes difference in his and others life. And that’s why Omaha is a city you want to live and

Название программы «Au Pair» у многих на слуху. Что же

значит это загадочное «Au Pair». Слово «au pair» в переводе с

французского значит «взаимность, обоюдность», есть и другой

перевод, обозначающий примерно «старший брат/сестра».

Используя это выражение, подразумевают взаимовыгодное

соглашение между семьей, нуждающейся в помощи по

хозяйству и молодым человеком, чаще девушкой, желающим

в течение одного года улучшить свои знания иностранного

языка (иногда выучить еще один) и познакомиться с обычаями

и образом жизни страны не в качестве туриста, а изнутри, в

семье.

Программа Au Pair

«Au Pair» – это также название молодежной

студенческой программы, которая работает в Европе

уже более 50 лет и регулируется общеевропейским

постановлением с 1969 года, а с 1994 года - и

Международной ассоциацией агентств «Au Pair» в

Копенгагене IAPA. История «Au Pair» берет исток в

прошлом веке. Немецкоязычные семьи в Швейцарии

посылали своих дочерей в знакомые французские семьи с целью изучения французского языка и

правил этикета. Это были семьи среднего класса, которые компенсировали таким образом

недостаток образования своих детей, т.к. средствами для полноценного образования они не

располагали.

После Второй мировой войны движение «Au Pair» возродилось. Оно приобретало всё более

широкий размах.

Программа Au Pair

Участник данной программы должен быть умным,

образованным, хорошо воспитанным человеком,

принимающей его (ее) семьи. От Au pair обычно

ожидается базовое знание языка, не требуется опыт

или квалификация, но необходимым условием

является любовь к детям, желание обучаться,

готовность к выполнению работ по дому, наличие

дружеского расположения к принимающей семье, а

также умение решать возникающие проблемы в

незнакомой обстановке.

В последенее время обмен по линии «Au Pair»

постоянно пользуется повышающимся спросом

среди молодежи разных стран. Эта программа

может многое предложить молодым людям, это и

возможность улучшить знания иностранного

языка, что немаловажно для профессионального

Обучение на Мальте обойдется дешевле на 30-40%, чем в Великобритании, да еще и

проблем с получением визы обычно не возникает, даже у никогда ранее не

выезжавших за рубеж. Да и жизнь на Мальте значительно дешевле, чем в Европе, а

потому не случайно, что 38% студентов в языковых центрах Мальты составляют

немцы!

Невероятно насыщенная ночная жизнь Пачевиля (район ночных развлечений) с

огромным количеством клубов с музыкой на любой вкус и возраст! От него в восторге

В силу давних традиций и малых размеров архипелага на Мальте почти нулевая

преступность. Здесь живут законопослушные граждане. Смертная казнь отменена в

общенационального масштаба.

International Merit Scholarships up to $5,000

Grand Valley State University

Every year, Grand Valley awards a limited number of International Merit Scholar-

ships to incoming international students who have demonstrated an outstanding

academic achievement record. The value of this scholarship is $5,000 per year.

All students who submit a complete application for admission by May 1 are eligible for this merit-based

scholarship. In addition, students must write an essay of approximately 1,000 words on the following top-

ic: “What will I do to bring cultural and international perspectives to Grand Valley that will enhance the

learning environment for the entire GVSU

community?”

Typically, qualified students have a mini-

mum 3.0 grade point average, but decisions

are based on academic credentials, the

scholarship essay and information provided in the application materials. Transfer students from U.S. four-

year colleges and universities, and students being fully funded by their government are not eligible.

The Google Anita Borg Memorial Scholarship Offers up to $10,000

Dr. Anita Borg devoted her adult life to revolutionizing the way we think about technology and dismantling

barriers that keep women and minorities from entering computing and technology fields.

In her honor, Google is proud to honor Anita’s memory and support women in technology with the Google

Anita Borg Memorial Scholarship. Google hopes to encourage women to excel in computing and technology

and become active role models and leaders in the field.

Scholarship recipients will each receive a financial award for the academic year. A group of female under-

graduate and graduate students will be chosen from the applicant pool, and scholarships will be awarded

based on the strength of each candidate’s academic background and demonstrated leadership.

In addition, all scholarship recipients and finalists will be invited to attend a retreat at Google. The retreat

will include workshops, speakers, panelists, breakout sessions and social activities scheduled over a couple

of days.

AKEAC highlighted this lecture for UGRAD applicants. Peace Corps Volunteer (PCV) Rachel Worley gave to the

students some tips on how to write successful essay.

01/13/2011 Lecture on “Interview Techniques”

During this lecture Gaukhar Tuleuova, Program Manager and PCV Rachel Worley gave some tips on how to

prepare for an interview for a job or exchange program. The introduction part of this lecture included useful

information on learning what to do before, during and after an interview. Main part of lecture included infor-

mation on some tips which are provided by an American education specialist who has seen hundreds of stu-

dent interviews, sample questions asked during Academic Programs, and extra tips What NOT To Do and

questions to think about before your interview.

01/20/2011 Lecture on “Financial Aid”

AKEAC Advisers discussed “financing your U.S. Education.” The main topic of this lecture included information

on university expenses, some tips which will useful before applying to university, general advice, sources of

funding for Undergraduates, sources of funding for Graduates, sponsors, loans and U.S. Government Pro-
