Q: WHY DID YOU JOIN THE AIP? WHAT BENEFITS DO YOU BELIEVE THE AIP OFFERS ALL THEIR MEMBERS?Riccardo joined AIP to be connected with the packaging business environment in Australia in order to expand his social network and at the same time source relevant information keeping his level of knowledge up to the date. He hopes as well, since his professional background has been developed overseas, the membership will help him to gain local exposure and endorsement.

Q: HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN IN THE INDUSTRY? WHAT ARE YOUR AREAS OF EXPERTISE?Riccardo has over eight years experience in the industry with his main expertise in:1) Primary packaging for about four years: mainly PET Injection and Stretch Blow Molding for beverage and liquids containers, including technologies for increased shelf life and oxygen intake reduction (coating, blending, nitrogen injection). 2) Secondary packaging for about four years: carton wrap around and film shrink wrapping for continuous processes.3) Tertiary packaging or logistic packaging for palletised load containment using stretch film, banding, hooding, for about four years. 4) Spiral wrapping product bundling, for four years.

Q: WHAT IS YOUR CURRENT JOB ROLE AND WHAT ARE YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES? Riccardo’s current role is a sales and engineering one focused on providing prospects in different industries (Food, Beverage, Building Materials) with end of line packaging automation solutions, including secondary packaging (case packing and product bundling), robotic stacking (palletisation) and pallet load film stretch wrapping. The work process starts with customer consultation, packaging and automation needs assessment and goes through feasibility study, lay out drawings preparation, equipment selection and job quoting.

Riccardo is also responsible for a portfolio of four overseas brands of packaging equipment, acting as liaison person and product manager for Australian market, providing customer and sale’s team with technical information and quotations.

NSW MEMBERS HEAR FROM BLACKMORES, DIAGEO AND BRASKEM

Dr Gordon Robertson receives the Riester-Davis award from Dr Valentina Trinetta, Chairman of the IFT Food Packaging Division.

RIESTER-DAVIS AWARD WINNER

A t the US Institute of Food Technologists (IFT) annual meeting in Chicago in July, Dr Gordon Robertson FAIP received the prestigious Riester-Davis Award for 2015. This award is recognition for lifetime achievement in food packaging and

is named after the two founders of IFT’s Food Packaging Division: Don Riester, who was a pioneer in aseptic packaging, and Rees Davis, who was a leader in retort pouch packaging.

Dr Robertson received this award in recognition of his outstanding contributions to advancing and transferring knowledge of food packaging. He is the author of the highly successful book FOOD PACKAGING PRINCIPLES & PRACTICE now in its 3rd edition. Dr Robertson was Foundation Professor of Packaging Technology at Massey University, New Zealand before joining Tetra Pak, the world’s largest food packaging company. Since 2003 he has worked internationally to provide education and training in food packaging, delivering lectures and offering workshops and webinars around the world. In addition he is a tutor for Australian students studying for the Diploma in Packaging Technology.

Over 50 people from the AIP and the SPE attended a fabulous technical dinner in August where Jackie Smiles MAIP, Environment and Sustainability Manager, Blackmores Ltd, Marlene Cronje-Vermeulen MAIP, Packaging Technologist, Diageo Australia and international guest speaker Fernando Costa Almada, Technical Sales Manager Asia & Oceania, Braskem S.A presented some interesting papers. A very successful evening enjoyed by all.
