We are holding our undergraduate recruits to a limited enrollment, due to clinical site availability and hospital based training requirements for the upper division. Academic Year off to a Booming Start!

We have officially welcomed the Class of 2018 to the College of Nursing. Along with our new freshmen, new upper division students, and new graduate students, our numbers are expanding and we are off to a booming start this academic year. In fact, we have the highest enrollment on record for the College of Nursing! On top of these achievements in recruitment of high quality students into our programs, we are enjoying momentous successes in the quality and excellence in our academic, practice, and research agendas.

Our latest nurse practitioner board pass rates continue to ex-ceed national and state averages, and our graduates are highly preferred among state, regional, and national employers. PhD Student, Kay Law-rence, will receive the South Carolina Nurses Foundation Graduate Nurses Care Scholarship.

PhD Student, Eboni Harris, has been selected to receive the 2014-2015 Johnson & Johnson Campaign for Nursing’s Future-AACN Minority Nurse Faculty Scholar-ship.

Lancaster and Salkehatchie students on the steps of Mccutch-eon House (the original College of Nursing at USC) came to cam-pus as part of a summer bridge program to prepare them for upper division.

NCLEX Pass Rate Above Average

NCLEX scores for our May graduates are in and USC has a 96% pass rate - higher that the state and national averages. Special recognition to our faculty, staff, and administrators in the undergraduate program for their hard work and dedica-tion to our students’ success. USC has the largest BSN pro-gram in the state, and is a leader in producing high quality and competent nurses in our region and beyond.

Jordan Ferrugia spent two weeks in Costa Rica on a medical mission trip with the program International Service Learning.

She said, “It was such an unbelievable experi-ence that I will remember for the rest of my life. It was both rewarding and humbling to bring healthcare to those who need it most. I learned so much from the other doctors and nurses on my trip that I believe will help me greatly as I begin upper division this fall. Also on my jour-ney, I met a lot of upper division nurses from all over the country and am grateful to have made these friendships. It was a wonderful way to end my summer!”

Join the SCRN

The South Carolina Rooster Nurses, USC’s chapter of the American Assembly for Men in Nursing was chartered in 2012 but saw a drop in membership the following year. This year, Mi-chael Pallon plans to help build up this organi-zation. While AAMN is an organization which advocates for the advancement of men in the nursing profession, membership to SCRN is not exclusive to male students. Pallon plans to make SCRN’s focus as an organization to bring nursing students out of the classroom and help them gain experience off campus. Any students that are in-terested in becoming a part of SCRN or would like more information can contact Michael at [email protected]

NCSBN Releases Results of National Simulation Study

The National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN) has released the findings of its award-winning research, “The NCSBN National Simulation Study: A Longi-tudinal, Randomized, Controlled Study Replacing Clinical Hours with Simulation in Prelicensure Nursing Education,” which concluded that substituting high quality simulation experiences for up to half of traditional clinical hours produces comparable end of program educational outcomes to those students whose experiences are mostly just traditional clinical hours and produces new graduates that are ready for clinical practice.

disparities experienced by lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans-gender (LGBT) persons. She investigates LGBT health disparities within a social justice and public policy para-digm. The goal of her research is to impact public policy thereby decreasing LGBT health disparities and victim-ization. Dr. Hein’s most recent research investigated the acceptability of various aspects of a support-group inter-vention in the LGBT community in South Carolina. Dr. Hein was invited to the White House by HHS Secretary Sebelius, for a briefing of 150 LGBT leaders on the Afford-able Care Act (ACA). She returned to the White House for a follow-up briefing on July 24th, 2014. Dr. Hein was the only attendee from South Carolina.

Dr. Hein is the fifth nurse to ever serve on the Board of Di-rectors of GLMA: Health Professionals Advancing LGBT Equality in its 30+ year history. During her tenure, the board of GLMA submitted amicus briefs influencing ap-pellate and U.S. Supreme Court decisions, regarding law and policy related to LGBT health. Dr. Hein co-led the effort that established the first Section within GLMA, as a home for LGBT nurses.
