Troubleshooting StepsDefine, Localize, Isolate and Correct

• Define Look at the symptom carefully and determine what circuits could be causing the failure. Use your senses Sight, Smell, Touch and Hearing. Look for burned parts and check for possible overheated components. Capacitors will sometimes leak dielectric material and give off a distinct odor. Frequency of power supplies will change with the load, or listen for relay closing etc.

• Localize After carefully checking the symptom and determining the circuits to be checked and after giving a thorough examination using your senses the first check should always be the DC Supply Voltages to those circuits under test. Always confirm the supplies are not only the proper level but be sure they are noise free. If the supplies are missing check the resistance for possible short circuits.

• Isolate To further isolate the failure check for the proper waveforms with the Oscilloscope to make a final determination of the failure. Look for correct Amplitude and Timing of the signals also check for the proper Duty Cycle of the signals. Sometimes “glitches” or “road bumps” will be an indication of an imminent failure.

• Correct The final step is to correct the problem. Be careful of ESD and make sure to check the DC Supplies for proper levels. Make all necessary adjustments and lastly always perform a Safety AC Leakage Test before returning the product back to the Customer.

Troubleshooting60PC1D Second GenerationCircuit Operation

The ON/ OFF Command for the Power Supply is developed on the Main Board, see page 30, and when the set is turned on, a high is applied as to the Base of Transistor Q 234. Transistor Q 234 Collector goes low causing the Gate of U241 to go low. With a low on the Gate of U241 the Cathode voltage will rise tuning off the Photo Coupler PC201 resulting in less feedbackto Pin 2 of U151, see page 31, and more output voltage to develop at the secondary side of the supply. The 6.5V Supply is sampled to provide feedback correction by the resistor network of resistors R234, R238, and R233 and sent to the Gate of U241were it is used to control the conduction of U241, and PC201, finally controlling Pin 2 of U151 by either increasing ordecreasing the feedback.

IC151 is the Power Regulator IC, start up voltage is developed from resistor R167, the Run Line used to maintain operation is Supplied by the circuit of D156, Q152, R151, ZD151, D153 and R160, see page 31, highlighted in yellow. The Power RegulatorTransformer T201 supplies the Power FET Q151 Drain. Q151 is protected by the snubber circuit of D152, C151, and R155from any back EMF caused by Transformer T201. The Gate of Q151 is driven by IC151, R154, R153,and D151. TransistorQ151 Source returns to ground via Current Sense Circuit ( Highlighted in Red on page 32 ) at Resistor R157. OCP (Over Current Protect ) is developed by monitoring the increased voltage drop across R157 and sending it to pin 3 of IC151 to shutdown the regulator circuit in the event of an Over Current Condition.

Over Voltage protection ( Highlighted in Blue on Page 31 ) is accomplished if the break over voltage across Diode Z152 increases turning on Q153 causing diode D154 to turn on lowering the voltage to both Pin 2 of IC151, causing the secondary voltage at T201 to lower, and the Base of Q152 to lower, which lowers the VCC voltage at Pin 6 of IC151 thereby shuttingdown the Power Supply.

60PC1D Power Supplies Troubleshooting

AC Power inputs to the AC/DC Supply which is responsible for supplying 160V and 20Vto the Standby Power Supply. The Standby Power Supply develops 5V ST and AC DETwhich is sent to the Main Board to control the power up and down functions. The StandbySupply also develops 12V needed to drive the Relays which switch the AC Power on and off.

Until now the set is turned off and the set is waiting for the on command from the Main Board. The Customer turns on the set and the Main Board reacts as long as the AC/DC Supply and Standby Supply are functioning normal. The next step is for the P-CTL line to go high which causes the Relays to close. The AC/DC Board will output 110VDC to the PFC Board developing the 380VDC and 18VDC lines which power up the SMPS Board and at this point the 19V ( must be measured from Audio Ground ) 12V, 6V, and 3.4V are now present.

Finally, to bring the set to full Power On we need the Main Board to output a high on the VS ON and POD Lines. VS ON is responsible for developing VS and VA voltages and POD is responsible for 5VDC.

39Plasma Display Panel Troubleshooting - 2007

This Troubleshooting Procedure relates to the Power Supply used in the 60PC1D Generation 1Plasma Display Panel. This explanation will assist the technician in confirming the normal operation of the Power Supply without the need to substitute the circuit boards. The condition of all four Supplies, the AC/DC Supply, the Standby Power Supply, the PFC ( Pulse Frequency Coefficient ) Supply and the Switch Mode Power Supply can be determined and confirmed.

60PC1D Power Supply Troubleshooting

Step 1 Remove the Power Supply boards from the unit and place in the service position, connect boards as shown on page 40. Place ( 2 ) 60 Watt light bulbs in series across Pins 1 and 6 of connector P8011 ( VS to GND ).

Step 2 Apply AC Power to connector P801. Check for the presence of 5V ST ( Pin 3 ), AC Detect ( Pin 1 ) at connector P801A, and 12V at all three pins of connector P8015A measured from Chassis GND. If the voltage is present disconnect AC Power and proceed to step three.

Step 3 Connect 100 Ohm ¼ Watt Resistor from ST 5V ( Pin3 ) to P CTL ( Pin 2 ) on connector P801A. Apply AC Powerat this time the AC Relays will close and the 380V ( PFC ) and 18 V Supplies will be present at P803A

use AC Ground for this check. Check for 19V ( Use Audio Ground ),12V, 6V, and 3.4V ( use signal Ground ) on connectors P800B and P101B. If present disconnect AC Power and proceed to step four.

Step 4 Connect 100 Ohm ¼ Watt Resistor from 5V ST ( Pin 3 ) to VS ON ( Pin 5 ) on connector P801A. The Lamps placed across P8011 should now light indicating the presence of VS voltage. VA voltage

can be measured from Pin 10 to Pin 6 of connector P8011 at this time. If present disconnect AC Power and proceed to step five.

Step 5 Connect 100 Ohm ¼ Watt Resistor from 5V ST ( Pin 3 ) to POD ( Pin 7 ) on connector P801A. At this time the5VDC Supply at connector P8012 should be present and the Power Supply fully operational.

For Failure of the below steps see page 42See Page 40 for resistor placement

60PC1D Power Supply Troubleshooting

Power On Sequence

• With AC Power applied only, the AC/DC Supply will develop 20V and 160V at P8016A to the Standby Supply.Failure to produce these voltages indicates a problem with either the AC/DC Supply Board or the AC Filter. Check the AC Input at P801.

• The Standby Power Supply outputs 12 Volts used for AC Relay operation at connector P8015B and 5 Volts Standby and AC Detect at P801A and is sent to the Micro Processor circuit for Power On and Control Functions.Failure of the 12 Volt Supply, 5 Volt Standby and AC Detect indicates a failure of the Standby Power Supply.

• The Micro Processor supplies a high to P-CTL Pin 2 of connector P801A causing the AC Relays to close on theAC/DC Board and develops 110 Volt DC at P8017A which is applied to the PFC Board turning on the 380 VoltPFC Supply and the 18 Volt Supply on the PFC Supply Board. These voltages are then used to develop the 19v, 12v,6v, and 3.3v supplies. Failure of the Relays to close could be caused by a loss of “ON” Command fromthe Micro Processor on the Main Board or a Standby circuit failure. Relay operation indicates an active processor circuit and Standby Circuit. Check for approximately 110 volts at P8017A if missing suspect the AC/DC Board ifpresent and the 380 Volt and or the 18 Volt lines are missing suspect the PFC Supply. Presence of the PFC and 18 Volt lines and no output would indicate a failure of the SMPS.

Remember to always check the resistance for possible shorts if you are missing a voltage

• The next step is to have the Micro Processor bring the unit into full power on mode, this is accomplished in 2 ways by first bringing the VS ON ( Pin 5 ) of connector P801A high in order to develop the VS ( Pin1 ) and VA ( Pin 10 ) on connector P8011, second bringing the POD ( Pin 7 ) of connector P801A high to develop the 5VDC at connectorP8012. Failure to develop VS, VA, and 5VDC, if the control lines are high, suspect the SMPS Board as the problem.Make sure you remember to check each resistance load for possible shorts if the voltage was missing!

With the Power Supply Board removed from the unit and placed in a service position apply AC Power to connector SC101 and check for Standby 5v at connector P800 ( Pin3 )and the presence of 5v AC Detect at P800 ( Pin1 ). Remove Power.

Step 1

Step 2

If the 5v Standby and AC Detect are normal, check the resistance at the output of ConnectorsP804 ( 5VDC, between Pins1 and 5 ) and P805 ( VS, between Pins 5 and 10 ) and ( VA, between Pins 1 and 5 )to be sure there are no short circuits, the resistance should be in the Meg Ohm Range.

Step 3

Connect the resistors and Light bulbs as shown in the Diagram ( PG 6 ) and apply AC Power. The Power Supply should output all the voltages necessary to operate the unit.

Failure of normal operation at this point indicates Circuit Board Repair or Replacement.

This Troubleshooting Procedure relates to the 50PC1DR Power Supply and should be used to assist in Troubleshooting and determining whether the Power Supply is functioning properly

without circuit board substitution.

This Troubleshooting Procedure relates to the Power Supply used in the 47LB1 LCD Display Panel. This explanation will aide the Technician in confirming the normal operation of the Power Supply without

needing to substitute the board.

Power Supply

Troubleshooting47LB1

Step 1

Remove the Power Supply Board from the unit and place it in the service position

Step 2Connect AC Power to connector SC100 and confirm presence of 5v Standby ( P202 pin 3 ) and AC Detect ( P202 Pin 1 ). Remove Power, if both are present proceed to Step 3.

Step 3Place 100 Ohm ¼ watt resistor as shown in the Diagram (PG 8) between RL - ON ( Pin 3 ) and 5v Standby VCC ( Pin 15 ) on the Sub Micon Board and apply AC Power. The 6v and 12v Supplies ( see PG 9 for their locations ) should now be present. Remove Power.

Step 4Install a 1K Ohm ¼ watt resistor as shown in the Diagram (PG 9) between 5v Standby ( P202 Pin 3 ) and 3.3v ON ( P202 Pin 13 ). Apply AC Power the remaining 19v, 24v and 3.3v Supplies should all be presentSee PG 9 for their locations.

Failure at any of above steps indicates a problem with the Power Supply, the Board will need to be Replaced or Repaired
