The 4th Sunday of Advent B

    Reading I: 2 Samuel 7:1-5, 8b-12, 14a, 16

    Responsorial Psalm: 89:2-3, 4-5, 27-29

    Reading II: Romans 16:25-27

    Gospel: Luke 1:26-38

    Listening With the Heart

Offand, it migt ave been better if te readingsfor Snda ad covered more grond: te censs,Joseps dream, Mars visit to Elizabet, te tripto Betleem, te refsal from te innkeeper, testar, te angels, te seperds, te animals andfinall te birt. Tere is plent of stor to tell.W did we not ear it?

Becase in te Gospel tis Snda, Lke and teCrc are concentrating not on te externals ofte Advent narrative bt on te insides of it. OnMars eart, beginning to ponder. Ma it bedone nto me according to or word, se sas.Tis inside stor is dramaticall significant to tewole man race, and er words isse from tecenter of wo se is.

Tere is a small problem for s, owever, inclarifing Mars words. A certain parallel stor inLke wold ave made te meaning of Mars

words mc more dramaticall clear: te angelGabriels annnciation to acaria (Lk 1:5-23).Te Crc cose not to inclde it tis Snda.*

Bt let s pretend tat acarias tale is inclded.Gabriel makes two Annnciations, one rigt afterte oter. Eac is abot a cild to be born, btneiter one is feasible as tings stood. Elizabet isbarren, so se cannot ave a cild. Mar as nosband and se ad never as ad conjgalrelations. W was ecaria strck deaf andmte, wile Mar went peacefll on er wa?

Te are in te same kind of fix, bt listen to oweac one reacts:

ecaria: how sall I know tis? ForI am an old man, and m wife is advancedin ears. Mar: how can tis be, since I ave norelations wit a man?

Stop. Ponder tese responses for a moment.

Spirituality of the Readingsecarias repl, wile realistic, is inslting. he issaing, give me some reason to believe wat oare saing, since or word is not enog.

Tis kind of qestion sold never ave occrredto im. Gods voice ad alread spoken lovedeepl into is eart trogot is wole life (likeDavid in te First Reading). his trst in Godspromise sold ave been te deepest meaning ofis existence.

In tis sense, ecaria was alread deaf and mtewen e first eard te Angel! he cold notreceive te words of te Angel (to ear), andterefore cold not give birt to te trt (tospeak).

Mar on te oter and seemed to know alreadtat noting is impossible to God. So se simpl

asked for clarification. Jst tell me ow tis isgoing to appen and I will gladl do it.

A remarkable insigt, too often idden from s.Comparison of te two responses elps simmensel to nderstand Mars inside stor, and ow se listened wit er eart.

how mc do o and I listen to te voice of Godspromise? It is written in or earts. Do or ownwords jst spot ot of s witot reference to tatnwavering love deep witin? In tat case we ma

be like ecaria. hard of earing wen it comesto te needs and beaties of tose arond s, andspeecless wen a word of love wold make all tedifference.

Let s ask mbl in tese last das of Advent forte grace to listen and to ear. Te one wopromised will not fail.____________________* At risk of making tis reflection into a market-place, I wantto mention tat I ad te onor of writing msic for botecarias and Mars Annnciations (as well as te rest of

te entire Advent stor). Te CD is called Like Winter Waitingand is a companion for Advent tat ma give o back part ofwat commerce migt ave taken awa. I am compelled tosa, terefore, tat it is available at 1 800 LITuRGy, orttp://www.ocp.org/prodcts/30109060#tab:contents
