2nd Sunday of Ordinary Time B

Reading I: 1 Samuel 3:3b-10, 19Responsorial Psalm 40: 2, 4, 7-8, 8-9, 10

Reading II: 1 Corinthians 6:13c-15a, 17-20Gospel: John 1:35-42

Called by Name

in the gospel, while Peter and John arediscovering Jesus for the first time, there is afascinating story in the First Reading.

here is a summary:

A young man named Samuel is sleeping in thetemple, as he was allowed to do. he wakes upinstantly when he hears his name spoken. he criesout, “here i am!” and runs to his master, Eli, whois sleeping in another place. “you called me, whatdo you want?”

“i didn’t call,” Eli rasps. “go back to sleep.”

The same thing happens again. Samuel runs to Eli.The old man at last understands. Wisely, andperhaps annoyed by being awakened, he says, “if ithappens again, say these words: ‘Speak, Lord, yourservant is listening.’”

Samuel goes back to sleep. god calls out again,“Samuel!” Samuel follows instructions: “Speak,Lord, your servant is listening!” it was the firsttime Samuel had been in contact with the Lord, andthe incident turned him into a prophet. notice:god can call any of us by a name that reaches allthe way down to the center of who we are, a placethat even we do not know about. our job is togrow into it.

Then there is the other naming in the gospel. Jesusis ready to call two men to be disciples. he waitsfor them to notice him and get interested. Theystart to follow him. Jesus turns and says bluntly,“What are you looking for?”

There are several layers to this question. The plainmeaning is, “What can i do for you? What’s up?”But the depth charge is there, the same one thatfinally shook Samuel loose: “What is your hunger? What are you seeking? god? is there something

Spirituality of the Readings

about me that answers the deep desire of yourheart?”

They stammer some kind of reply. “Well, uh,where are you staying?” Jesus replies as he does toyou and me:

“Come and see.”

They do go and see. They spend the day with him.one of them, Andrew, runs to get his brotherSimon. “We have found the Messiah!” he shouts. They run back to Jesus, and the most importantevent in Simon’s life thus far takes place. Jesusgives him a new name that defines him.

“From now on you will be called Cephas”—whichis translated Peter.

Jesus had looked all the way into Simon and hadknown that there was much more here thanappearances suggested. Cephas means “the

rock,” and Jesus saw the innermost stability in him.Like Samuel, Peter could never have become fullyhimself if someone had not called his name, clear toits depths.

Must it always be god or Jesus who calls our namein order for us to become ourselves? Couldn’t apsychologist do it, or a spouse, or a dear friendwho believes in us? yes, of course, each of theseknow us and beckon us to be ourselves.

But only god can know our deepest desires, andonly god can satisfy the desire in us that is mostprecious of all: the ability to reach out for the onewe desire the most and for whose sake we loveothers.

god.

Do you sense in your insides a kind voicewhispering your invitation, calling you by yourreal name, calling you to be best friends with theChrist of god? Well, listen.
