Schindler's List, a StevenSpielberg film, is a
cinematicmasterpiece that hasbecome one of the mosthonored films of
all time. The film presents theindelible true story of the
enigmatic OskarSchindler, a member of the Nazi party, womanizer, and
war profiteer who saved the lives of more than1,100 Jews during the
Holocaust. It is the triumphof one man who made a difference, and
the dramaof those who survived one of the darkest chaptersin human
history because of what he did.
(The tomb for Oskar Schindler is in the FranciscanRoman Catholic
Cemetery on Mt Zion, outside the OldCity walls of Jerusalem.)

A Pilgrimage is different from a tour. I have mademany
pilgrimages to ancient Celtic sites and Irishmonasteries, places
associated with St. Francisand St. Clare of Assisi, and St. Joan of
Arc, pre-Christian European sacred places, literary sources, the
Holy Land of Israel/Palestinian territoriestheFifth Gospel, to name
a few. They all had anumber of things in common, not mere travel
butsoulful. Learn the seven stages of a sacredjourney, whether the
pilgrimage be virtual or real, near or far, literary, religious or
of another form.Recommended for all who have been on or
areconsidering going on a Pilgrimage of any kind.
(Especially recommended for upcoming Holy LandPilgrims, either
new or returning. This will also be anopportunity to meet Fr. Gene

Fifth Sunday of Lent B
Reading I: Jeremiah 31:31-34Psalm 51:3-4, 12-13, 14-15Reading
II: Hebrews 5:7-9Gospel: John 12:20-33
Coming to Pieces.
A tiny grain plants itself deep within the soil. Ittucks its
small self into complete darkness, but isfearless, comforted by the
tough, safe shell that isits home. It belongs there, and it knows
it. Home,in quiet. In growth.
Then calamity.
The shell-shelter turns tightand invading and painful.
Thegrowing seed finds its peace replacedby shock. Its great
protector isopposing it, holding it back. Crushing it.
Then, suddenly, as if planned from all eternity, theprotecting shell
cracks right open. It goes to pieces.Wait, wait, I need you, shouts
the seed! Moisturetrickles in, and bits of dank, cold soil.
Anythingand everything can now wriggle right into theheart of what
was a quiet, pure place.
The seed shudders. What is left of it copessomehow, crazily
extending a new, thin armoutward and slithers its whole self steady
byjerks through the cracks in its shell. It must getout of there.
It dares its way into the rough, coldmud. How foolish and how
shaming. Stay wheresafety is, you fool!*
But the slowly transforming tiny self seems to takeon an
unexpected new life. Is this its new homenow, right in the slippery
soil? It moves withcaution. Too much is in its path, including a
huge, unyielding rock. A jagged, rough, uncaring rock, heedless of
tiny green shoots.
And so the story ends.
Except that the former seed appears to have willpower. It is
seeking somethingurging itselftoward some pressing objective,
rooting its waywith intuitive ambition.
Spirituality of the Readings Fingering along the brutal
under-edge of the rock, fearfully and with rending pain, and after
whatseems like years it achieves the far under-edge ofthis gnarly
rock and, guess what, it starts upwardagain.
Now there are hard clods to press through, andpebbles aplenty.
The higher it goes the more drythe surrounding soil becomes. The
top crustforbids any penetration. It is an ultimate, intractable,
stupefying barrier.
And so the story ends.
Except for one voice from deepwithin. Push. Push, it murmurs.
Iam with you. Now just a thinnestlesion in the tough skin. With
a
certainty that might have beenwritten on its heart, this
vine-to-be gets to the place it was meantto be. In a heaven of
light andwarmth, bathed in the suns
astonishing rays, the plant stretches and yawns inthe wafting
breezes of Spring.
This is just like our own journey, isnt it? Dark mudthat takes a
chokehold on our life.
But Jesus says, do not worry, child, trust me.Unless a grain of
wheat falls to the ground anddies, it remains just a grain of
wheat; but if it dies,it produces much fruit (Gospel)

But I will not hatch, I will not hatch.
The hens they all cackle, the roosters all beg,
But I will not hatch, I will not hatch.
For I hear all the talk of pollution and war
As the people all shout and the airplanes roar,
So Im staying in here where its safe and its warm,
And I WIll NoT HATCH!
