Girls on the Run of Central New Jersey (GOTRCNJ) is a one-of-a-kind physical, activity-based social and emotional wellness program for girls in 3rd through 8th grade. The program teaches girls to develop self-respect, healthy relationships and to recognize how they can shape the world.

That’s significant because a girl’s confidence drops twice as much as a boy’s by age 14. Her self-perception of academic ability declines, the likelihood of anxiety and depression increases and participation in physical activity plummets.

GOTRCNJ was founded in 2001 with 60 girls at three locations and currently serves over 2,200 girls at 117 locations in Camden, Middlesex, Monmouth, Ocean and Somerset counties. Annually, over 600 volunteers support our mission through coaching and race day assistance.

The finish line is just the beginning!During the ten-week GOTR program, which takes place in both the spring and the fall, certified volunteer coaches lead the girls in discussion, activities and games. The program culminates with the girls completing a community service project and preparing for a celebratory 5K run event.

Along the way they develop critical life skills such as conflict resolution, intentional decision-making and an appreciation for health and fitness that will help them become confident, caring and connected young women.

5K Sponsorship Opportunities

GOTRCNJ hosts three 5K run events each year, two in the spring and one in the fall. The girls are joined at these events by coaches, parents, friends and community runners for a celebration of their achievement.

Open to the public, these events draw over 5,000 runners and spectators from five counties and we depend on community sponsors to underwrite the cost. Net proceeds from the runs provide scholarships to girls in low income areas in the communities we serve.
