Commander’s ColumnFor openers, Boy Scout Troop 181 cancelled their Spaghetti Dinner

Fundraiser after our last newsletter was published. For many years Boy Scout Troop 181, sponsored by the VFW, hosted this event using our facilities due to its physical size. The proceeds benefitted both their troop and veterans at the Hines VA. Let’s hope they’ll be able to do it next year.

On a more positive note, we had 2 great events in February. In case you missed them, they were the Super Bowl Party and Friday Night Fun Night. These were inexpensive events that were well attended considering the cold weather and everyone that came had a really great time.

Coming up we have another Friday Night Fun Night scheduled for Friday, March 4th. The entertainer will be Dan Hamilton, who has performed here several times before and was scheduled back by popular request. There will be a nominal $5 per person donation at the door. We’ll be featuring Papa Passero’s pizza along with Legion prices for drinks. Of course there will be a 50/50 raffle.

Don’t forget to set your clocks ahead on Sunday, March 13th (Spring ahead, Fall behind) or you’ll end up being late for something.

Later this month we’ll be having New Member Initiation on March 19th. Even though it’s a little past St. Patrick’s Day, we’ve ordered Corned Beef & Cabbage for dinner at 6:00pm; there’ll be a nominal $5 per person charge for dinner (except for new members and their spouses). Please come and welcome our new members.

For the past several months Dave Wisbrock has taken on the task of verifying, writing and posting the history of our Post on the National Legion website at www.legion.org/centennial located under Department of Illinois. This is a very energetic initiative by Dave as the American Legion approaches being 100 years old in March of 2019. Dave has identified information he seeks in articles in this and previous newsletters and I’m sure would appreciate your help.

A friend sent me an email that advised: “Old age is like a bank account: you withdraw from what you’ve put in. Remember the five simple rules to be happy:

1. Free your heart from hatred.

2. Free your mind from worries.

3. Live simply.

4. Give more.

5. Expect less.

May you always walk in sunshine.

Auxiliary News – Feb. 2016Year of the Cat

“PurrFect Service to Our Veterans”

Will March be coming in like a lion or a lamb? Due to the groundhog’s prediction, we are sure to have an early spring and an early Easter. I am looking forward to

both events – spring and Easter. I hope that the weather is spring like as there are several meetings, conferences, and social programs coming up this month.

The winter board meeting was held in February and all active committees are progressing as expected. A reminder to all committee chairs that year end reports are due to District in April. I’ll have a reminder for everyone at the March meeting.

The Americanism essay contest is in full swing. There were 21 essays submitted for review. The unit 80 judges will be reading the essays and determining the winners over the next several weeks. The winners will be invited to the March meeting to read their papers. Please try to come out to the meeting if you are able and support these young people in their growth as students and citizens. Note that all members will be “hostesses” as the girls, teachers, and parents are invited to join us for refreshments after the meeting.

Girls State information has gone to the local schools. We have two candidates and are funded for four. If you know any high school age girls who would be interested, please let Bev Parrott know about them. This is an opportunity that should not be passed up. In April we will have a “meet and greet” session with the girls from last year getting together with the girls who will be going this year.

A nominating committee has been formed to create a slate of officers for 2016-2017. The committee members are Arlene Guest, Mary Ann Proney, Joey Klingbiel, Julie Isenberger, and Pat Mustradi. If they call you, please thoughtfully consider taking an office within the unit. The duties are not difficult and you will never meet and work with a better group of women.

Auxiliary News....cont. from pg 5....

The Poppy license has been applied for and so we will plan to collect for the vets on Mother’s Day Saturday and May 26th and 27th. Any and all hours that you can commit to are welcome. Collections are local so there is no travel involved. Even one hour of your time will help the vets. You can contact Kim Cruz with your availability.

Unit 80 will begin selling an American Veteran bracelet as an ongoing fundraiser. When the bracelets come in, we will have them available for $5.00 at Bingo, meetings, District and Division meetings and other gatherings at the Post. I think that these bracelets will sell quickly so you might want to buy a couple of them while you can. More information will be in next month’s newsletter.

New member initiation will be held on the 19th of March. All new members and any existing members who have not been “formally” initiated are invited to attend. If this is you, please let me know as soon as possible.

And finally – we welcomed a new member at our meeting in February. Chris Graves is the wife of Randy Graves, a Post 80 member. Welcome Chris, we are happy to have you with us.

Upcoming events – Every Saturday at 7:30 am at the Post – Tai Chi classes for beginners.

These classes are geared to the entry level person and will last for ½ hour. There is no charge for the class. The regular level class will continue until 9:30 am if you want to stay for that one also.

In checking with our Auxiliary Representative at Edward Hines Jr, VA the following list of comfort items are needed on an ongoing basis. You can bring them to bingo any Tuesday evening or Auxiliary meeting (the second Monday of the month): COMFORT ITEMS: Denture adhesive, Denture cleaner (tablets), deodorant, face soap, nail clippers, new underwear for ladies in L. XL, XXL, +, new sweatpants/new sweatshirts (L,XL,XXL, +) for both men and women. Due to lack of storage space and a surplus of lap robes and blankets, they are not accepting these until further notice.

Our volunteer years starts APRIL 1 AND ENDS MARCH 31 OF EACH YEAR. I am keeping track of those auxiliary ladies hours and turning them in so those ladies who volunteer on a regular basis with me will get proper credit. I have mailed in the Easter Gift Survey for 2016. Our unit has contributed to this Program and veterans who reside in local nursing facilities, VA hospitals, homeless facilities, homebound will be remembered during this time. My special thanks to all Post-Unit members who have helped so far with our many programs that are offered.

What in the World is "Hug A G.I. Day"?

(...and why does it keep showing up on the Legion Calendar every March?)

Well, after a little "googling", we found out that it was created in Chicago by a cartoonist and writer named Adrienne Sioux Koopersmith back around 1996. Here is how she wrote about it in her blog in 2013...

"HUG A G.I. DAY©1996 – ASK-Style. Celebrating and saluting our Military Heroes.

Monday, March 4, 2013 is near and almost here. That means it’s the 17th Annual HUG A G.I. DAY©1996 created by moi: ASK: Adrienne Sioux Koopersmith back during that other Century & Millennium the 1900s.

As an Eventological Holidate, March 4th the only Date in Calendrical Time that is a military command: March Forth.

At that point in time, this is when we all rally together and I personally would like to wish all our Military People, both near and afar - from past to present wars for staking and putting their Lives and Limbs on the Line for us.

For without you, we would not have any freedoms even the FUN freedoms of surfing The Internet to posting jokes on Facebook to staying out late to enjoying the pleasures that life offers us - as we are having today and doing 'write' now. Your unending and unfailing courage, compassion and risk-taking did that, PLUS MORE.

Thank you - so much.

Wishing the Best to all of our Heroes and Sheroes who fought for our Rights in a highly troubled and way too violent world where WARS should never take place in the first place.

Peace, ASK: Adrienne Sioux Koopersmith AKA: 'America's Premier Eventologist' Studio 1437, Chicago - IL USA

Also found on Facebook.com/Adrienne.Sioux.Koopersmith"

Since 1996, citizens of the U.S. celebrate this "holiday" with a hug and a deep sense of gratitude for those who are serving in and have served in our Armed Forces. So, consider yourself HUGGED and MARCH "4TH" and HUG another G.I.!

Boogie Woogie Bugle BoyBy Don Raye and Hughie Prince

Made famous by the Andrews Sisters

"Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy" was a major hit for The Andrews Sisters and an iconic World War II tune. This song can be considered an early jump blues recording. The song is ranked #6 on Songs of the Century. Bette Midler's 1972 recording of the song reached the top ten on the U.S. pop singles chart.

The song was written by Don Raye and Hughie Prince, and was recorded at Decca's Hollywood studios on January 2, 1941, nearly a year before the United States entered World War II, but after the start of a peacetime draft to expand the armed forces in anticipation of American involvement. The flipside was "Bounce Me, Brother, With a Solid Four". The Andrews Sisters introduced both songs in the Abbott and Costello film, "Buck Privates" (released January 1941), which was in production when they made the record. "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy" was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Song.

The song is closely based on an earlier Raye-Prince hit, "Beat Me Daddy, Eight to the Bar," which is about a virtuoso boogie-woogie piano player.

According to the lyrics of the song, a renowned Chicago, Illinois street musician is drafted into the U.S. Army during the peacetime draft imposed by the Roosevelt administration. In addition to being famous, the bugler was the "top man at his craft," but the army had little use for his talents and he was reduced to blowing the wake up call (Reveille) in the morning. This caused the musician to become dejected: "It really brought him down, because he couldn't jam." The Cap (An army captain — the company commander) took note of the bluesman's blues and went out and conscripted more musicians to assemble a band to keep the bugler company. Thereafter, the bugler found his stride, infusing the military marches with his inimitable street flair: "He blows it eight to the bar—in boogie rhythm." Even his morning calls attain some additional flavor: "And now the company jumps when he plays reveille." But, the bugler is not only empowered, he is possibly spoiled, because thereafter, "He can't blow a note if the bass and guitar/Isn't with him."
