Commander’s ColumnAs October draws to a close and we prepare for winter, visitors to

our post home will notice some of the improvements we have made and the maintenance items we have addressed recently. The parking lot and driveway have been re-sealed and striped and it all looks brand new. If we take care of the asphalt parking lot it should last us for decades into the future. The exterior lighting around the post has now been replaced and upgraded with halogen fixtures. The new lighting improves the appearance of our facility and greatly enhances the safety of our members, Auxiliary members and visitors to the post during evening hours. This has been a concern of mine and I am grateful to John Cruz, who serves as Jr. Vice Commander and House & Grounds Chairman, for addressing the lighting upgrade so quickly.

Last month in this column I took a moment to recognize some of those who work to make the poker events and weekly bingo a success and I neglected to mention the A Team. The A Team is an elite group of members who allow us to open the doors to bingo players in the late afternoon every Tuesday by showing up in the early afternoon to set up the hall with the tables and chairs we need to have a successful event. Some A Team members stay around to work bingo or become bingo players themselves. It all begins with the A Team on Tuesdays and those gents are to be duly recognized.

In November we will keep busy at Post 80 by serving as a polling place on election day, which reminds me to encourage everyone to vote on that first Tuesday. The following Sunday, November 11th, is Veterans Day and we will have our usual ceremony in front of the post beginning at 11am. The dedicated service of the country’s veterans, from 1775 until today and every day in between, has given us and preserved for us our rights as free citizens including the right to elect the country’s leaders. I hope as many people as possible will vote on election day and join us a few days later to commemorate our service and the service of those veterans who have come before.

Have a restful and good Thanksgiving.

Todd Hanson Commander

Auxiliary News – Nov 2012SPECIAL NOTICE – VOTE ON CONSTITUTION AND

BYLAWS at 11/12/12 MEETINGRecommendation to Unit for Action: There is a request for a vote by unit members to revise the Unit Bylaws to reinstate the elected Unit Officer position of Second Vice President and move to fill that officer position for the 2012-2013 Auxiliary year. This is an option within the National

CONSTITUTION AND BYLAWS. The Purpose for Change is to Re-activate the unit officer second vice president position which will provide immediate assistance to the Unit President in meeting the Unit’s program goals. In addition, reactivation of this position will provide a clearer path for preparing and assisting Unit members to move upward as Unit officers and provide expanded opportunities for leadership training. This recommended Action is supported by vote of the Unit Executive Committee on 9/6/2012. The Unit will vote on this proposed change at our November meeting.

BOARD MEETINGThere will be an Auxiliary Board Meeting on– November 1, 2012 at 6 pm, Post 80. All Unit 80 officers and committee chairs are requested to attend.LEADERSHIP CLASSThere will be an American Legion Auxiliary Leadership Class on November 3rd starting at 10:00 a.m. at the Post.GIRLS STATEOn October 8, 2012, our Girl State Representatives reported on their experiences this summer. 90th Birthday Donations Already at Work - OSOTILOn October 12th, President Rosemary Collins and Birthday Committee Chair Karen Greenwald visited the offices of Operation Support Our Troops: Illinois to present a check from Unit 80 for $1003 to Sue Liston, Administrative Director. She gave us a tour of the facility and showed us how each box is carefully packed to maximize the amount of items that are shipped. Our donation will help OSOTIL to meet its goal of shipping over 5000 packages to active military stationed overseas in time for Christmas.

90th Birthday Time Capsule – World War IIDecember 7, 1941 to December 31, 1946

Unit 80 found our focus for the decade of the thirties not only on our veteran’s but on their children. It was hard times for everyone, but we took care of the orphans and destitute families of veterans, supplying everything from milk, eyeglasses, TB testing and even paying for doctor visits and a tonsillectomy. Things were looking up by 1940. The Legion and Auxiliary looked forward to the completion of our new Post home at 1035 Burlington Avenue. As always, Unit 80 offered assistance with $600 to help pay for the plumbing fixtures, heating equipment, floor coverings and drapes. But with the dawn of December 7, 1941 all of our efforts became focused on all of the young men entering service. We helped sell war bonds and stamps, helped with blood drives, helped with draft registration, took home nursing courses and gave thousands of hours to the Red Cross, serving wherever we were needed. Our juniors helped with the many scrap and rubber drives. Sadly, the number of Gold Star Mothers grew in Downers Grove and in June, 1945, our President, Minnie Lester learned her son Fred had died on Okinawa after risking his life to save a wounded Marine. He was posthumously awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for his bravery.

Respectfully submitted,Rosemary Collins

Unit 80 was honored to have the following American Legion Auxiliary Department of Illinois officers as our guests at the 90th Birthday luncheon: Department President, Patricia (Pat) Sienkiewicz, 1st. Vice President, Judy Simmerman, Membership Chairman, Luella Buske, and Department Chaplain, Anna May Mann. We owe the success of our Unit 80 90th Birthday celebration to the hard work of our Birthday Committee: Karen Greenwald, Chair, Marge Pavich, Arlene Guest, Rosemary Collins, Theresa Schey, Donna Rosenkranz, Norma Border, Bonnie Bonnecarre, and Joey Klingbiel! (See pictures on pages 12-13).

Next Auxiliary Meeting – November 12, 2012 at 7 pm. We look forward to seeing you there!!
