Commander’s ColumnCome to our Super Bowl party on Sunday, February 3, 2019. The

doors will open at 4:00pm and the kickoff is scheduled for 5:30pm. It’s potluck, so bring something to share. The price of admission is a food donation for the Township Food Pantry. See the ad elsewhere in this Legion-Aire. Then come to the regular business meeting on Wednesday, February 6 for Todd Hanson’s world-famous chili.

Mark your calendars for the Rider’s Spaghetti Dinner on Saturday, April 6th, 2019. Doors open at 4:00pm. Buy your tickets on any Tuesday night during bingo (to help us guess how many will be coming), or $8.00 at the door. Our Post 80 Riders do a great job of supporting our veterans and community, so let’s support them. For example, just in 2018 the Riders gave $1000 to the Legacy Run, $500 to the Midwest Homeless Shelter, $500 to the Gary Sinise Foundation, $500 to Toys for Tots, and $500 to the National Emergency Fund. Amazing! To see the 2019 State of the Post briefing given to the Downers Grove Village Council, go to https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QWPboLn0h1I

Thanks again this year to Bob McGuffin for running the Oratorical Contest. Downers South freshman Ensara Sejko finished in first place to advance to District. Ms. Sejko spoke on an overview of the Bill of Rights with emphasis on the 13th Amendment abolishing slavery.

Thanks also to John Cruz for erecting the huge window shades on the south side of the lounge. Not so easy. Well done John.

Morrison Scholarship applications are due by tax day, April 15, 2019. Post 80 member’s children and grandchildren are eligible. Go to www.post80.org/forms.html or the bulletin board for the application.

For current news and photos please go to “American Legion Post 80” on Facebook or our website at www.Post80.org . Thanks to Ed Ludwig for keeping the website calendar up-to-date on an almost daily basis.

I SAY AGAIN: Send us your email address. Do it now. Without it we cannot let you know about bargains and news between monthly issues of this Legion-Aire.

Cheers! Rick McLaren—Commander [email protected]

REMEMBERING THE FOUR CHAPLAINS

Abridged article - to read full article online: http://www.fourchaplains.org/the-saga-of-the-four-chaplains/

It was the evening of Feb. 2, 1943, and the U.S.A.T. Dorchester was crowded to capacity, carrying 902 service men, merchant seamen and civilian workers.

Once a luxury coastal liner, the 5,649-ton vessel had been converted into an Army transport ship. The Dorchester, one of three ships in the SG-19 convoy, was moving steadily across the icy waters from Newfoundland toward an American base in Greenland. SG-19 was escorted by Coast Guard Cutters Tampa, Escanaba and Comanche.

Hans J. Danielsen, the ship’s captain, was concerned and cautious. The Dorchester was now only 150 miles from its destination, but the captain ordered the men to sleep in their clothing and keep life jackets on. Many soldiers sleeping deep in the ship’s hold disregarded the order because of the engine’s heat. Others ignored it because the life jackets were uncomfortable.

On Feb. 3, at 12:55 a.m., a periscope broke the chilly Atlantic waters. Through the cross hairs, an officer aboard the German submarine U-223 spotted the Dorchester. The one that hit was decisive–and deadly–striking the starboard side, amid ship, far below the water line.

Captain Danielsen, alerted that the Dorchester was taking water rapidly and sinking, gave the order to abandon ship. In less than 20 minutes, the Dorchester would slip beneath the Atlantic’s icy waters....The CGC Comanche saw the flash of the explosion. It responded and then rescued 97 survivors. The CGC Escanaba [rescued] an additional 132 survivors.

Aboard the Dorchester, panic and chaos had set in. The blast had killed scores of men, and many more were seriously wounded. ...Through the pandemonium, according to those present, four Army chaplains brought hope in despair and light in darkness. Those chaplains were Lt. George L. Fox, Methodist; Lt. Alexander D. Goode, Jewish; Lt. John P. Washington, Roman Catholic; and Lt. Clark V. Poling, Dutch Reformed.

Quickly and quietly, the four chaplains spread out among the soldiers. There they tried to calm the frightened, tend the wounded and guide the disoriented toward safety....“Witnesses of that terrible night remember hearing the four men offer prayers for the dying and encouragement for those who would live,” says Wyatt R. Fox, son of Reverend Fox.

One witness, Private William B. Bednar, found himself floating in oil-smeared water surrounded by dead bodies and debris. “I could hear men crying, pleading, praying,” Bednar recalls. “I could also hear the chaplains preaching courage. Their voices were the only thing that kept me going.”

Another sailor, Petty Officer John J. Mahoney, tried to reenter his cabin but Rabbi Goode stopped him. Mahoney, concerned about the cold Arctic air, explained he had forgotten his gloves. ...“Never mind,” Goode responded. “I have two pairs.” The rabbi then gave the petty officer his own gloves. In retrospect, Mahoney realized that Rabbi Goode was not conveniently carrying two pairs of gloves, and that the rabbi had decided not to leave the Dorchester.

By this time, most of the men were topside, and the chaplains opened a storage locker and began distributing life jackets. It was then that Engineer Grady Clark witnessed an astonishing sight.

When there were no more lifejackets in the storage room, the chaplains removed theirs and gave them to four frightened young men.

“It was the finest thing I have seen or hope to see this side of heaven,” said John Ladd, another survivor who saw the chaplains’ selfless act.

Ladd’s response is understandable. The altruistic action of the four chaplains constitutes one of the purest spiritual and ethical acts a person can make. When giving their life jackets, Rabbi Goode did not call out for a Jew; Father Washington did not call out for a Catholic; nor did the Reverends Fox and Poling call out for a Protestant. They simply gave their life jackets to the next man in line.

As the ship went down, survivors in nearby rafts could see the four chaplains–arms linked and braced against the slanting deck. Their voices could also be heard offering prayers.

Of the 902 men aboard the U.S.A.T. Dorchester, 672 died, leaving 230 survivors. When the news reached American shores, the nation was stunned by the magnitude of the tragedy and heroic conduct of the four chaplains.

The Distinguished Service Cross and Purple Heart were awarded posthumously December 19, 1944, to the next of kin in a ceremony at the post chapel at Fort Myer, VA.

A one-time only posthumous Special Medal for Heroism was authorized by Congress and awarded by the President Eisenhower on January 18, 1961. Congress attempted to confer the Medal of Honor but was blocked by the stringent requirements that required heroism performed under fire. The special medal was intended to have the same weight and importance as the Medal of Honor.

Remembering Iwo JimaMost people, when they hear the island name "Iwo

Jima" immediately think of the famous photograph by AP Photographer, Joe Rosenthal, of the raising of the U.S. flag on Mt. Suribachi and subsequently one of the most famous sculptures located in Arlington, VA near our nation's capitol.

Iwo Jima was strategically important, enough so that air and naval bombardments of the island started in June 1944, almost a year before the battle. The US hit Iwo Jima with naval bombardments for three days. Though the explosions did knock out some trenches and caves, the effect was still limited because of the tunnels and bunkers.

Up to 60,000 Marines and several thousand US Navy Seabees were to take part in the operation. The operation relied on small craft that would ferry troops and supplies to the island from the bigger ships and back again. They also had to carry back dead and wounded soldiers. On February 19, 1945, the Marines landed.

The Marines used multiple kinds of landing craft, like Higgins boats and Landing Vehicles Tracked (known as amphtracks or amtracs). Once the Marines landed, they quickly found that the volcanic ash on the island was difficult to move in, got vehicles stuck, and slowed them down considerably. The ash was softer than sand, and in some places slopes were as high as 15 feet. As a result, many tanks, amtracs, and other vehicles were stuck, and the Marines moved slower on the beaches. All of this made the troops on the beach sitting ducks against Japanese artillery.

The Japanese had mortar and artillery positions all over the island. Mount Suribachi’s high ground was a perfect area for spotters to call in artillery strikes on the Marines. With constant bombardment, the Marines had no choice but to move forward. Taking Mount Suribachi became a primary objective.

As the Marines pushed further inland, Navy Seabees, Coast Guard sailors, and other troops began offloading weapons and supplies. Combined with air and naval support, American artillery guns on the island allowed for quicker support that the Marines could call on. Mount Suribachi was taken in the first week of the battle. It was here where Joe Rosenthal took his iconic photo of Marines raising the US flag.

As the end of February came, the Japanese showed no sign of surrender or defeat. The tunnels and bunkers were proving hard to destroy. Japanese resistance was still strong in early March, but progress was being made. But American methods of forcing the Japanese out were taking their toll. The Japanese were also running low on food, water, and ammunition. The Americans, on the other hand, were still getting supplies shipped in. Naval and air support was also proving to be very effective. Kuribayashi realized that the situation was hopeless. On the evening of March 23, he radioed his last message to Japan.

Today, US and Japanese visitors to Iwo Jima, now allies, pay their respects to those who died in the battle. The tradition of honoring the dead of the battle is still honored at the top of Mount Suribachi, where memorials to the US and Japanese troops are located.
