4th Grade Informational Writing

OWhat is Informational Writing?

O Expository (informative) writing communicates information to the reader to share knowledge or to convey messages, instructions, and ideas.

Day 1 Directions (read aloud to

students)

You will have two days to complete your writing. Today, I’m going to go over the prompts that you can choose to write about.

I’m also going to clarify the expectations I will expect from your writing and give you time to THINK about what you want to write about.

Today, you’ll have 20 minutes to write. I’ll collect your papers and tomorrow you will have 30 minutes to finish your writing.

Prompt #1 Harriet Tubman

O History is filled with great leaders. Harriet Tubman is one of them.

O Why was she a great leader?

What is important to remember about her?

Prompt #1 ContinuedO Write an essay you could give to younger students about why

Harriet Tubman should be remembered.

O Your writing should be informational, engaging and should contain words that paint a rich picture in the reader’s mind.

O Even if you know other information about Harriet Tubman, make sure to use only what you read about the article.

O You may refer to the article but do not copy. Start your essay with an introduction, include facts and ideas about your topic, and end with a conclusion.

O Sleep is important. This article taught you that it can even help you get sick less often.

O Write an essay you could give younger students about why getting sleep is important for your health.
