Island Moon July 7, 2010 PA 6 It’s been a wild ride this Fourth of July holiday with Hurricane Alex threatening to rain on our proverbi- al parade. The Back Porch cancelled the Friday show with the Sisters Morales (and re-booked them for August), when the TV weathermen had us all dash- ing for shelter. By the time that Alex finally decided to stake his claim in Mexico, the damage was pret- ty much done here in Port A...our biggest weekend of the year wasn’t to be. By late Saturday the skies cleared and the beaches started filling up, but it was nothing like last year. It was nice in one respect, not to have to fight the traffic, but there’s no denying that Alex stole our thunder. The good news is that the shows still went on and we still partied like rock stars here on the island. Larry Joe packed the house at the Porch on Saturday and Austin Heat had them dancing in aisles at the Ice House. Ray T and Lyrical Bynge held court at the Flats and I suppose there was music in Corpus. The truth is that I can’t seem to make it any farther than Padre, lately... blame it on the heat, blame it on lazi- ness. But, I’ve become quite attached to my small ra- dius in Port A that has become my comfort zone and I couldn’t be happier waiting for the world to come to me...or not. Fortunately, there’s plenty of music in my little village and I don’t feel the least bit guilty about my lack of travel to find good music to tell you about. Maybe I’ll go to town when it cools down some... or not. In the mean time, it’s a given that as long as there’s great live music venues like the Porch, the Ice House, Hooks, the Gaff and the Flats that I can get to on my bicycle, then you’ll know where to find me. Life is good on a small Texas island. Let’s roll... God Bless America... I want to share a most un- likely place that I ran across some great live music on the Fourth. It was on the upper deck of the Island Queen during the fireworks show just after dark in Port A. I was with an old and dear friend of mine of nearly 40 years, Ruth Swart. She was my college roommate back in Lubbock. I actually in- troduced her to her husband, Don Burrows (who was in town playing with Austin Heat), and they’ve been married 37 years and have four grown children. As Ruth and I stood on the up- per deck of the Queen and the fireworks started to ap- pear, a group of school age children started singing patriotic songs. There were maybe ten of them and their enthusiasm was infectious...everyone joined in. As we watched the fireworks overlooking the marina behind the Back Porch, and sang America the Beau- tiful and The Star Spangled Banner with these chil- dren; it brought me home. This is a wonderful coun- try we live in and I couldn’t have been more proud. It was truly touching. God bless America and God bless Port Aransas. HOBO HOBO (Corpus Christi, TX) played the Tarpon Ice House on June 25th. This is a band that I first saw perform at the Gaff last winter. I dig his demented sense of humor. And when you put a whole band of guys, who have the same attitude, around such songs as Round Women & Corn Whiskey or Klegberg County Beach, you get the whole HOBO experience. I’m a sucker for anybody with a banjo, Dobro and stand up bass anyway and these guys play a happy mix of original tunes that always hit the spot. The only cover tune I know Fred to cover was written by his young son, called Baby With a Beard. These boys are originals and really have a good sound going for them. I met HOBO’s banjo player, Chad Petty, last winter when he approached me about a 13th Floor Eleva- tors thing I wrote some time ago. He also played in a psychedelic band (Brightly Feathered Ones) and is a big Elevators fan. You gotta love a psychedelic banjo player. Check out HOBO whenever you get the chance...they definitely leave a lasting impression. I think they’re fabulous. Austin Heat Austin Heat (Austin, TX) played the Tarpon Ice House on July 3rd and 4th. If you haven’t gathered by now, I think these guys are great. Austin Roach, the 21 year old wunderkind, can flat out play a guitar. He’s as fluid and clean as they come. I’m telling you, this kid is strong! Without a doubt, Austin Roach is in complete control of his guitar. He has a bunch of foot pedals and has a nice, full tone. The band, beyond Roach, are all veteran players. Small Don Burrows (keyboard) is an old pal who goes back to Lubbock and Joe Ely’s early bands. The two brothers that comprise the rhythm section are east Austin dignitary: Dexter Walker (Mose Allison, etc) and Freddy Marshall (Tabboo). Freddy plays a seven string bass and plays all over it. Dexter played his drums the first hour of Saturday’s show using a tree branch and a screwdriver for drum sticks when he couldn’t find his...enough said. These are funky funky fellows. And the music is nothing short of bad ass! This is butt shaking music for the most part. They do play a wide variety of stuff (Neil Young, Beatles, San- tana, etc) but I think these guys are most at home when they’re playing James Brown or the Funky Meters. On the first night when the band pulled into town, Austin and Freddy arrived about an hour late for the gig and lo- cal faves, Woody Lawson and J.D. “Mr. Mo” Moore, hap- pened to be in the house and got the ball rolling with a few songs. This impromptu band with Lawson, Mr. Mo, Small Don and Dexter (with his screwdriver and firewood drum sticks) was cool. Lawson (Triggerfish) played bass and took lead vocals with a couple of standards and knocked the bottom out of Long Tall Sally, complete with kara- te side kicking. Mr. Mo (Buddy Miles, Rev. Horton Heat, etc) was just getting warmed up on his guitar when Austin and Freddy showed up but Austin did bring him back up later in the night. It was an unex- pected pleasure. Daddy pull over, there’s fun in there... On the Fourth, the Ice House had Austin Heat play in front of the Ice House, on the stage facing Allis- ter Street. And after the fireworks show at Roberts Point Park, the line of cars full of families who were creeping down Allister in the annual traffic jam got into the act too. I can hear the kids in the back seat of dad’s SUV now, “Pull over daddy, it looks like fun in there”...and it was. Two nights of Austin Heat about wore us all out but left us wanting more. This was the perfect band to party with on the Fourth of July. I’m hoping we see them again on Labor Day. Two Ton of Steel The swinging country unit known as Two Tons of Steel (San Antonio, TX) will play the Back Porch on Saturday, July 17th. The band is led by the eternal- ly peppy, Kevin Giles, who can sling a guitar and move around on stage with the best of them. He kind of like a Buck Owens meets Elvis Presley at The Ramone’s house...but with duct tape on his boots. Giles has been accompanied on stage by guitar mas- ter, Dennis Fallon, for many, many years in a rela- tionship that goes back to the days of San Antonio’s consummate garage band, The Dead Crickets. I want to share a most un-likely place that I ran across some great live music on the Fourth. It was on the upper deck of the Island Queen during the fireworks show just after dark in Port A.
