A 18 Island Moon March 14, 2013 Lisabellas Bistro & Bar Celebrating Coastal Cuisine 361-749-4222 Open Monday - Saturday at 5:00 pm Casual Dining at it’s Finest Nightly Seafood Specials By Ronnie Narmour [email protected] Wow! We made it through another Spring Break (barely). I thought this one sucked even worse than last year. Not only did we have a kazillion idgets on the beach to contend with, DPS was all over us like white on rice. When all the smoke finally cleared, the only ones that got any real business off the breakers were Stripes, the IGA, Bernie’s and the city jail. I’m thinking of going into the bail bond business. But, in the name of music, I latched on to my designated driver and hit the bars anyway. The clubs were dead despite the fact that there were 100,000 tourists in town… bad news travels fast. Here’s how I spent my weekend: Cody Angel… Our boy, Cody Angel (Port Aransas, TX) was home for Spring Break being that he’s an actual college student these days. Cody was originally scheduled to play the Porch as sideman to Matt Wayne & Company (Ft. Worth, TX) but that unit disbanded unexpectedly and Cody gladly slid into the front man role with his blues trio. He had his main man, Antone Perez on drums and Southside Johnny Schubert on bass. Since he’s been enrolled into South Plains College in Levelland, I’ve been taking notes on anything different in Cody’s bag of tricks. Since he left Port A I see that he’s become quite the proficient steel player and his confidence level on stage has jumped about three notches. Also, either he’s been taking voice lessons or he’s finally shaken off that last bit of puberty. He’s singing in a deeper tone and with stronger projection. It appears that higher education is wearing well on our young Angel. You’re sounding good boy! Keep it up the good work. Cruise Control… The big eleven piece, horn powered party band, Cruise Control (Corpus Christi, TX), made their first appearance of the season at the Back Porch last Friday night. I always the blast back to the days of disco and hot R&B dance tunes that Cruise Control sends me to. These guys really go it going on with a variety of vocalist and harmonies. I’m especially impressed with their young lead guitarist, Pepper Gonzales, who they gave the reins to on the Georgia Satellite’s hit, “Keep Your Hands to Yourself”. That guy is good and he’s even been nominated for a Grammy with the band La Sombra and is in the Tejano Hall of Fame. The band’s repertoire of songs such as Get Down Tonight, Black Magic Woman, Oye Como Va and Play That Funky Music kept the dance floor hopping all night. I can see why the Back Porch keeps having this band back time after time… they’re just plain fun! Three Way Street… Three Way Street (Port Aransas, Tx) had the honor of being the first band to grace the stage at the brand new Giggity’s Bar in Port A last Friday. This band is led on guitar and vocals by Jimmy Simmons who has a powerful baritone working for him (not to mention one beautiful hollow body Guild guitar). I’ve seen this band several times now and really think they have some strong potential. Their song list is pretty standard classic country meets classic rock, but it’s still tasty. Their set lists has such variety as George Strait (Troubadour), SRV (Mary Had a Little Lamb), Jamie Johnson (Seen It In Color), Bad Company (Sea Gull), Josh Turner (Your Man) and Procol Harem (Nights in White Satin). Walter Mitty Band… The Walter Mitty Band (Corpus Christi, TX) played the Tarpon Ice House last Saturday night. I love the name… Walter Mitty was the character from fiction that lived in a wild, imaginary world. The founder of this band is Rusty Hicks who also the publisher of Steam Magazine, a publication dedicated to music and entertainment in South Texas. Rusty is the drummer and also sings. Local guitar slinger Dan McLeod also loans his most excellent stink in the way of some classic rock vocals and all around guitar wizardry. McLeod is a Minnesota transplant who moved to Port A a couple of years ago and has been lurking in the shadows, stepping out only occasionally with Rae Ann Reed and a few local jams. This move with the Mitty Band seems right for him. He plays classic rock extremely well. Also, I think Rusty does an excellent job with his magazine, Steam. I know he’s constantly on the move from here to Austin and San Antonio and all point in between to get his stories and distribute his rag. What he does is no easy task and I have a lot of respect for the guy. He covers a lot of ground. Six Market Boulevard… Six Market Boulevard (Stephenville, TX) played the Back Porch last Saturday night. This was actually the only band I saw all weekend that wasn’t a cover band. In fact, the only cover I heard them do was when they brought a friend up from the audience to play The Band song, The Weight. I’ve heard this band 4-5 times now and they are growing on me. Though their pigeon hole is Americana/Texas Country (a genre I have issues with), I still think they are an incredibly talented group of musicians. They have a rocking back beat and smooth vocals and their songs aren’t riddled in stereotypical lyrics, as much of Americana is. I like them and am beginning to feel comfortable liking them. I know they’re getting some radio play on Badlands FM. DO NOT MISS LIST Melissa Brooke Since Spring Break is over, maybe now we can get some crowds back to bars to hear some music. That statement is just wrong on so many levels. This week, our hometown island surfing cow-chick, Melissa Brooke, will make her debut at the Back Porch on Friday night. Brooke is a 19 year old fresh faced filly straight out of Port A High School, who is making her mark on the music world early in the game. She’s got a freshman CD going and a hot little band and the big boys are taking note. Her voice is spot on, her songs stay with you and her on-stage demeanor demands your attention. I think it’s just a matter of time before this little gal gets found. Good luck missy! You’re on the right track. Scarecrow People On Saturday, the reincarnate of Sting, Tim Russell, will bring his band, Scarecrow People (Corpus Christi, TX), to the Back Porch. These guys have been marking double duty on the island lately, having just played three gigs in rapid succession at Lisabella’s in Cinnamon Shores. I wanted to reprint their bio here, I think it’s interesting: “Once upon a time, in 1991, a man named Tim and a few of his friends formed a reggae band. Tim borrowed the name “Scarecrow People” from an XTC song. Many, many gigs later, in 1996, the band reformed into a rock band, changing the format to a strange blend of “B” sides, soundtracks, 80’s, retro, and more. Sixteen years and 18 different band members later, it’s hard to say who the Scarecrow People are.... ”It’s not just a band... It’s a tradition” Kevin Higgins/ Ruben V… On Friday, March 29 th , Kevin Higgins and Barbara Malteze (Austin, TX) will bring the duo version of their band, The Dust Devils, to the Back Porch. Higgins is one of the wittiest (and unsung) songwriters on the circuit today. I really enjoy his duo act when he gets an opportunity to showcase his writing. Kevin Higgins is nothing short of a poet. On Saturday, March 30 th , my old compadre’ from S.A., Mr. Ruben V will make his first appearance to the Porch for 2013. Ruben is a guitar master and his high energy show is captivating. I love to hear him sing some Marvin Gaye. Welcome back V… we’ve missed you. The Sandy Bottom Gospel String Band… And finally, on Easter Sunday our new gospel string band, The Sandy Bottom Gospel String Band, will play the sunrise service at Robert’s Point Park in Port A. This ecumenical service is an annual event put on by all the churches in Port A. This gospel ensemble is the brainchild of Father James Derkits of the Trinity By the Sea Episcopalian Church in Port Aransas. The band includes Steve Goldstein (guitar, mandolin and vocals), Crawford Brown (stand-up bass and vocals), Owen Fitzsimmons (fiddle), Bill Davis (banjo), Stuart Burns (guitar and vocals), and myself (vocals). Also, three young members of the regular Trinity choir, Ty Morris (guitar and vocals), Jason Morris (hand drums) and Jenna Ward (vocals) will lend their astonishing talents. The group practiced for the first time this week and chose their songs to perform at the service, including I’ll Fly Away, The Soul of Man Never Dies, Pow’r In the Blood and Alleliuia. In the words of Father James,”Nothing says resurrection like a banjo.” And, that’s the truth!z Stuart Michael Burns Every Wednesday (7-10) Carol Elliott Every 2nd & 4th Friday (5-7) Open Jam with Uel Jackson Every Sunday (7- 11) 321 N Alister * (361) 749-2337 Mike Williams Every 1st & 3rd Friday And Every Monday (5-7) Free Beer Band Every Thursday (7-10) The Gaff Beer Pizza Belt Sander Races (361) 749-5970 5009 Hwy 361 Port A @ Cinnamon Shores Live Music Thursday, March 21 Antone & the All Stars @ Dr. Rockits Free Beer Band @ Tarpon Ice House Local Licks @ House of Rock John Eric @ Island Italian Uel Jackson (4-7) @ Sugar Shack- Rockport Friday, March 22 Melissa Brooke Band @ Back Porch Ray T & the City Crew @ Flats Lounge Samantha Aiken @ Coast Club Leopold & His Fiction @ House of Rock The Groove @ Executive Surf Club Gary Moeller @ Coffee Waves Matt Hole & the Hot Rod Gang @ Dr. Rockits Saturday, March 23 Scarecrow People @ Back Porch Stevie Start @ Coast Club Ray T & The City Crew @ Flat’s Lounge Cory Morrow, Pake Rossi & Johnson Grass @ Executive Surf Club Ken Barnett @ Coffee Waves Ruben V @ Dr. Rockits Larry Joe Taylor @ Third Coast Theater Sunday, March 24 Open Jam w/ Uel Jackson @ Tarpon Ice House Tumble Dry Low @ Bernie’s Beach House Ballabajoomba Poetry Slam @ House of Rock Open Jam @ Neptune’s John Eric Open Jam @ South Texas Ice House Julian Drive @ South Texas Ice House Rich Lockhart Band @ Dr. Rockits Monday, March 25 Mike Williams @ Tarpon Ice House Open Jam w/ Antone Perez @ Doctor Rockits Soulfly, Incite, Lody Kong @ House of Rock Tuesday, March 26 Open Mic @ House of Rock Deftones @ Concrete Street Amphitheater Party of Three @ Dr. Rockits Wednesday, March 27 Open Jam with Wolfjaw @ Flat’s Lounge Stuart Burns @ Tarpon Ice House HOBO @ House of Rock PA Rockers @ Bernie’s Beach House Wednesday, March 27 continued Open Mic @ Executive Surf Club Dave and Shea @ Dr. Rockits Thursday, March 28 John Cortez @ Dr. Rockits Free Beer Band @ Tarpon Ice House On Blast Standup Showdown @ House of Rock John Eric @ Island Italian Uel Jackson (4-7) @ Sugar Shack- Rockport Friday, March 29 Kevin Higgins Band @ Back Porch Mike Williams (5-7) @ Tarpon Ice House Ray T & the City Crew @ Flats Lounge Samantha Aiken @ Coast Club The Washers @ Executive Surf Club David & Barbara Brown @ Coffee Waves Justin Estes @ Dr. Rockits Saturday, March 30 Ruben V @ Back Porch Stevie Start @ Coast Club Shadow Moon @ Flat’s Lounge Stuart Burns @ Fish House At My Signal, With My Last Breath, Darkness Divided, Tomorrow Too Late @ House of Rock Hilda Lamas @ Executive Surf Club John Eric Open Jam @ South Texas Ice House Grassfire @ Coffee Waves Mike Milligan & the Altar Boys @ Dr. Rockits Easter Sunday Sandy Bottom String Band (Sunrise service) @ Roberts Point Park Open Jam w/ Uel Jackson @ Tarpon Ice House Tumble Dry Low @ Bernie’s Beach House Open Jam @ Neptune’s Monday, April 1 Mike Williams @ Tarpon Ice House Open Jam w/ Antone Perez @ Doctor Rockits Tuesday, April 2 Open Mic @ House of Rock Wednesday, April 3 Stuart Burns @ Tarpon Ice House Open Jam with Wolfjaw @ Flat’s Lounge Open Mic @ Executive Surf Club Thursday, April 4 Antone & the All Stars @ Dr. Rockits Tonight Ray T & the City Crew Every Friday Mon-Sat 10am- 2am Sun Noon- 2am Vampires Welcome Three Chords and the Truth LIVE MUSIC EVERY NIGHT Keepers Horace Caldwell Pier (361) 749 - 5333 Fishing, Pole Rentals, Beer, Burgers, Wings C Coast Club Martini Sports Bar 1023 State Highway 361 + Port Aransas, TX + (361) 749-5637 Smoking on Patio Only Samantha Aiken Every Friday AshVill Construction LLC Residential, Multi-Family & Commercial New Construction & Remodels Ashley R.
