Nunn @ Back Porch Five Card Draw @ Brewster Street Ice House It’s been another great week of live music here on the coast. The rain may be coming down in buckets lately but it hasn’t washed out any of the shows around here. I’ve got a ton of stuff to tell you about. Let’s roll… Free Beer Band/ Mr. Mo/ Ruben V The Free Beer Band, who plays the Tarpon Ice House every Thursday, put on another outstanding show last week. I just love to hear Daddy Dale sing the Girl With the Far Away Eyes. This is one of the most fun sing-along bands around and always gets the crowds involved. Last Friday was also a good night for live music on the island. Mr. Mo (Port Aransas, TX) played his solo show at the Ice House and stirred up a really huge crowd. If you haven’t seen Mo play acoustic guitar, you’re missing out. Everyone knows he can shred on electric, but his acoustic show is incredible…melodic and smooth. He still sings like he’s been gargling battery acid, though. Also last Friday, guitar master Ruben V (San Antonio, TX) graced us with his great Latin tinged soul show. This was Ruben’s first gig of the season and it’s always great to see him. Dust Devils/ Rockin’ Ricke’s Open Jam On Saturday, the Dust Devils (Austin, TX) blew into the Back Porch for the first time this season and gave us a great show. Kevin Higgins has been busy writing songs lately and played a few of them for us. And on Sunday everyone got into the act at Rockin’ Ricke’s weekly jam at the Ice House. Locals Jack Gant, Arnold Govella, Dan McLeod and Dennis Sullivan showed up and showed their stuff. Sullivan really has that Willie Nelson material down. He’s very good. All and all, it was a very nice weekend of music on the island. W.C. Clark/ The Derailers/ Wanda Jackson There are some noteworthy shows in the near future. W.C. Clark, Austin’s Godfather of the Blues, will play the Back Porch this Friday. And, Davin James will play there on Saturday. Also, I want to mention that Slaid Cleaves (Austin, TX) will play the Third Coast Theater on the 19 th after he plays the festival in downtown Corpus that day. I have some big news…. Susan Powell over at the Back Porch has confirmed that the Derailers (Austin, TX) will play on June 2 nd . In case you don’t know, the Derailers have been honky tonkin’ Austin for decades and are one of the city’s favorites sons. Their shows at the Broken Spoke are legendary. And this is down the road a ways, but you heard it here first… the Queen of Rockabilly, Wanda Jackson, will be at the House of Rock on June 22 nd . Jackson was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2009 at the insistence of Bruce Springsteen and Bob Dylan. She has shared stages with Elvis Presley (and even dated him briefly) and has 34 studio recordings to her credit that go back as far as 1958. Her career is remarkable and I’ll definitely talk about her more as we get closer to the gig. She’s a real hero of mine. DO NOT MISS LIST Tarpon Music Bash Al Barlow (New Braunfels, TX) will host the Third Annual Tarpon Music Bash this weekend (May 18&19). The line-up this year is about the same as every year…it’s a large contingency of Hill Country musicians and friends of Al Barlow from around New Braunfels, Wimberley, Dripping Springs and San Marcos. Several of the musicians are from Corpus and Aransas Pass. Barlow, the happiest singer- songwriter on the planet, hosts a very successful open mic every Sunday at the Phoenix in New Braunfels. He also has a column in Lone Star Music Magazine. The two day event this year will feature Michael Waid, Dallas Burrow & Music From the Karma Farm, Billy Snipes, Lucas Taylor, J.W. Brothers, Scott & Smiley, Alex Whitmore, The Cofield Brothers, Paul McLaughlin, Dan Brodhag, Jamie Smith and Johnny Santos. Take my word for it, the music coming off of this stage will be glorious! Discover Downtown Music Festival The first ever Discover Downtown Music Festival will be held on Shoreline Blvd. in downtown Corpus on Saturday, May 19 th . Tickets are $10 for General Admission and $25 for VIP. I critiqued Joe King Carrasco and Todd Snider in this column last week. Slaid Cleaves will also be playing later that night at the Third Coast Studio in Port A. Here’s the schedule (in order of appearance): Scarecrow People (Corpus Christi, TX) 1:30 pm, Slaid Cleaves (Austin, TX) 2:50 pm, The Most 3:45 pm, HOBO (Corpus Christi, TX) 4:45 pm, Cold Irons 5:50 pm, Joe King Carrasco& the Crowns (Puerto Vallarta, MX) 7:00 pm, and Todd Snider (Nashville, TN) 8:30 pm. 29 th Annual Songwriter Showcase The 29 th Annual Songwriter Showcase will be held in Roberts Point Park in Port A on Monday, May 21 st . This perennial event is a fund- raiser for the Island Art Center. It is a family friendly event where everyone is encouraged to bring their own ice chests and lawn chairs. The Songwriter Showcase was originally held at the storied Tortuga Flats and moved to the courtyard of the Tarpon Inn for many years. I think, correct me if I’m wrong, that it began as a birthday celebration for an old island resident, Jessie Bishop. Preecher Williams and Woodie Ray Lawson put this year’s event together and the line-up is the cream of Port A’s gifted singer-songwriter community. Each musician is only allowed three songs. Here’s the schedule: 7:00-7:15.......Perry Wing & Gary Harp 7:15-7:30.......L. Leon Sands 7:30-7:45.......Carol Elliott 7:45-8:15.......Hamp Brockman & Janet Drew 8:15-8:30.......Guy Le Roux 8:30-8:45.......David “Bottlehead” Miller 8:45-9:15.......Mark Wilks, Woodie Ray Lawson, & Luis Villarreal, (aka. Triggerfish) 9:15-9:30.......Melissa Brooke 9:30-9:45.......Tyler McCumber 9:45-10:00.....Alma Squillante & Luis Villarreal, (aka. Havana Daydream) Rockport Festival of Food and Wine The Rockport Festival of Food and Wine will be held over Memorial Day Weekend at the Texas Maritime Museum in Rockport-Fulton. There will be wine seminars and cooking demonstrations. I went last year when Joe Ely, Cody Angel and Mike Milligan played and it was very comfortable. There’s a ton of delicious food, beer and wine to sample and plenty of seating for everyone. For ticket information go to http://www.texasfestivalofwines.com/index. html. Here’s the schedule: Saturday, May 26: Another Level (4-6), Aqua Vox (6:30- 8:30), Carolyn Wonderland (9-11). Sunday, May 27: Carol Elliott (4-6), Bo Porter (6:30- 8:30), Larry Joe Taylor (9-11). Aqua Vox (Port Aransas, TX) is an island “super group” comprised of three veteran musicians, L. Leon Sands, Carol Elliott and Woodie Ray Lawson who all have successful careers in their own right. This group came together for the sole purpose of playing 60’s Brit Pop and Surfer music. Look for old favorites from the likes of Dick Dale, The Ventures, The Beach Boys, The Hollies, The Beatles and T Rex. The headliner on Saturday will be the great Carolyn Wonderland (Austin, TX). Miss Wonderland is a force to be reckoned with. For starters she masterfully plays the guitar, trumpet, accordion, piano, mandolin, lap steel and has turned whistling into an art form. She sings with the power of Janis and plays with the fury of Stevie. Margaret Moser of the Austin Chronicle says of Wonderland, “When she blisters the guitar and cocks her head fetchingly to sing her songs like “I’m Innocent” she stands in the good company of Sue Foley, Debbie Davies, and Bonnie Raitt. But when she whistles, as she does with disarming ease on another of her compositions “I’m the Man,” or picks up the trumpet, she’s one of a kind.” Bo Porter (Austin, TX) is a rockin’, honky- tonkin’, fast swinging, motorcycle riding troubadour that’s worked the far corners of the world. From Alaska to Florida to California to Texas and Europe, Bo Porter knows how to put on a show. His deep voice has been compared to Marty Robbins and Merle Haggard. Carol Elliott (Port Aransas, TX), originally from Atlanta, GA, Carol Elliott moved to the Texas Coast from Nashville where she worked as a recording artist, record company exec, song writer and production assistant. She’s sung on the streets of San Francisco and toured the international folk circuit for 30 years. Elliott’s gifted voice is undeniable and her songs world class. Honestly, she’s quite remarkable. Larry Joe Taylor (Stephenville, TX) is one of the most popular acts on the Gulf Coast. He practically invented Island Time. And that’s the truth!
