No time to waste. Let’s roll… Terri Hendrix Terri Hendrix (San Marcos, TX) put on one of the very best shows I’ve ever seen her perform on February 4 th at the Third Coast Theater in Port A (and I’ve seen her play many, many times in the last 15 years or so.) Although, she only performs here about once a year, it’s obvious she loves this venue and she loves Port A….and Port A loves Terri Hendrix. On this night, the energy in this packed house was off the charts and Hendrix fed off it like a Thanksgiving Day feast. Terri Hendrix’s music is unique and uplifting. It is full of amazing sounds from the arsenal of acoustic instruments that she and her accompanist, Lloyd Maines, play without flaw. Their stage looks like a pawn shop: guitars, mandolin, lap steel, papoose, harmonicas, and yes…even a banjo. Maines is a master musician plain and simple. Put strings on it and Lloyd will make it pop wheelies. Hendrix has put out 12 albums on her own label since 1996 and all of them showcase her talented songwriting and beautiful voice. She is truly a woman who has created her own universe and our world is a better place for it. On this night in Port A, the audience had the honor of listening to several songs Hendrix had never played in public before. She is in the process of putting a new CD together with a blues and gospel slant. Her treatment of the American Folk Hymn, Arise and Go To Jesus, was chilling. She also broke out the old jump blues number, Feets to Big, which has been covered by Fats Waller, the Ink Spots, Leon Redbone and the Beatles. It’s obvious that Terri has been woodshedding on her harmonica lately and she’s been focusing on roots and blues. She told me, “I’m working hard on the blues stuff. I’m a total beginner and it’s tough.” If these two numbers are any indication, I’d say she’s being a bit humble. They sounded perfectly in sync with her otherwise folky style and she positively nailed it on both songs. DO NOT MISS LIST Richard Leigh & Larry Joe Taylor Richard Leigh (Nashville, TN) and Larry Joe Taylor (Stephenville, TX) will play the Third Coast Theater in Port A on Saturday, February 18 th . Leigh, who has been writing songs since he was ten years old and professionally since he was twenty-three, got his first break in 1976 when Crystal Gayle released “I’ll Get Over You”, and took it to #1 on Billboard’s Country Chart. His big hit, “Don’t It Make My Brown Eyes Blue,” reached the #1 position on both Pop and Country charts and remained on the charts for more than six months and won a Grammy Award for “Best Country Song”. It was a million selling single, and was named one of the ten most performed “Country Songs of the Century” at the 1999 ASCAP Awards. In addition to his own three Grammy Nominations, five of Leigh’s songs have become vehicles to the Grammy Awards for other artists in the “Best Performance”, “Record of the Year”, and “Vocal Event” categories. To date, Leigh has made fourteen trips to the Top Ten and has written or co-written eight #1 singles. I met Richard last year through Lighthouse Rick when we met for beers at Shorty’s. He’s a pleasant sort with a tow sack full of stories. When I told him the name of my column, Three Chords and the Truth, the first thing out of his mouth was, ”Harlan Howard” and he proceeded to tell me all about him. (The late Harlan Howard was a noted Nashville songwriter and Country Music Hall of Fame inductee and is credited for formulating the oft-quoted definition of a great country song: “Three chords and the truth.” I must say, I’m proud to have stolen my moniker from such a noteworthy source.) Then Richard went to the jukebox and played six of his songs. I was impressed. Larry Joe Taylor is definitely an island fave. He plays Port A half dozen times each year and always draws sellout crowds. His music festival in Stephenville each April pulls in 40,000 fans and features some of the biggest names in country music. A prolific songwriter, Taylor has been recorded by such artists as Jerry Jeff Walker, Keith Sykes, Richard Leigh, Gary P. Nunn, Michael Hearne and Tommy Alverson. Though I’ve ragged on LJT in the past for dialing in the same rhetoric at every show, he’s an island treasure and a consummate pro and there’s not a soul in Port A who doesn’t know the words to Island Time. I went to this song swap with LJT and Richard Leigh last year and thoroughly enjoyed it. I was especially amused after listening to one of Larry Joe’s particularly lengthy introductions, when Leigh-who had waited patiently for his turn- introduced his next number by saying, “I wrote this next song during Larry Joe’s last song.” Gaff’s 2 nd Annual Bluegrass Festival Mama Tried, The Crystal Creek Boys, and Get Off The Lawn will perform in Port A at The Gaff’s 2 nd Annual Bluegrass Music Festival, on Saturday, February 18. This family- friendly “jamboree” promises to provide the type of Pirate and Island flair which the Gaff has become famous for. There will also be an old-fashioned auction for the first time this year. The live music and fun games, such as “Chicken Bingo with The Amazing Pearl”, will begin at 1 p.m. and continue until 10 p.m. The Gaff is known for delicious pizza, cold beer, and unique events such as their Pirate Pub Crawls and the world famous Beltsander Races. This event will benefit non-profit organizations such as the ARK and AIR. Free booth spaces for non-profit organizations, as well as vendor space and sponsorships, are still available for this event. For more information go to www.gotothegaff.com or contact [email protected].  Gretchen Peters Gretchen Peters (Nashville, TN) will perform for the Burning Bush Concert Series at the Parkdale Presbyterian Church (3703 Santa Fe Street) in Corpus on Monday, February 20 th . The concert series is held in conjunction with Texas Public Radio station KEDT 90.3 and the Sunday night program, “Some Call It Folk” hosted by Pam Stakes, Brad Brown and James C. Davis. Past performances include Sarah Hickman, Susan Gibson, Carolyn Aiken, Karen Mal, Shake Russell, Dana Cooper, Butch Morgan, Taylor Pie and John Smith, among others. Peters’ own voice and guitar playing have been at the core of her music since she started performing in the Boulder, Colorado folk circuit as a teenager. She was inspired by Paul Simon, Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell and a new generation of songwriters rising out of Nashville that included Steve Earle and Nanci Griffith. She has written songs for hits Martina McBride, Etta James, Trisha Yearwood, Faith Hill, Patty Loveless, George Straight and Neil Diamond and has co-written with Bryan Adams. The Grammy nominated singer-songwriter has seven solo albums to her credit since 2001 and has recorded with such heavyweights as Tom Russell and Rodney Crowell. She calls her most resent release, Hello Cruel World, the “most close-to-the-bone work, written at a time when I felt absolutely fearless about telling the truth.” For more information go to www. burningbushconcerts.com. Port A Mardi Gras Parade Mike Williams Jazz Quartet Ya Ya Ya and Bon Ton Roulet!!! It’s Mardi Gras time on the island, yall. Pick your spot and get ready to catch some beads with the thousands of folks on the streets of Port A. The Fat Tuesday parade in Port A grows bigger and bigger by the year. I got a feeling this year’s parade will be the biggest yet. All floats need to lineup down Beach Street behind The Gaff by 3:30 or 4. The parade starts from the Gaff at 5:00. This year the route will be extended to include parts of the city south of the high school. ( Last year the head kept meeting the tail.) Then after the parade, get ready for some swinging New Orleans style Dixieland Jazz when the Mike Williams Jazz Quartet (Port Aransas, TX) plays on Fat Tuesday, February 21 st , at the Tarpon Ice House in Port A. The parade in Port A is scheduled to start at 5 p.m. and the band will play immediately after. The group features Rocky Arnold, a nationally acclaimed keyboardist who has played with such jazz stars as Paul Desmond and Bud Powell. The band plays traditional and mainstream jazz and, in addition to Arnold, is composed of Jack Trowbridge on saxophone, Cheo Reyes on trumpet and Pete Salazar on drums. Mike Williams plays rhythm guitar, trombone and handles the vocals. Hy Edleman will play his energetic style of Americana following the jazz show. With their stage located right on Alister Street, the Tarpon Ice House is definitely the best place on the island to watch the parade and get into the spirit of Mardi Gras. And that’s the truth!
