Introduction

Dear Colleagues!

Microsurgery of the middle ear is one important part of our speciality. Besides classical tympanoplasty procedures, indications and special interventions for surgical hearing restoration experienced an enormous progress by the rapid development of new prosthetic and technical devices up to cochlear implantation and implanta-ble hearing aids.

The surgical courses by the University ENT Departments of Bochum and Würzburg, established since 1988, have become an essential part in the education of starting and advanced middle ear surgeons and look back to a 25th anniversary. Based on active research and broad clinical experience these courses represent the actual state of knowledge in the field of hearing restoration. The complete spectrum of ear surgery is presented via high definition 3D transmitted live surgery from two surgical theatres, active training is offered by standardized temporal bone exercises. Basic knowledge as well as diagnostic and therapeutic details are presented by experts.

Certainly, Würzburg offers much more than a surgical course. Take the advantage to explore Würzburg’s historical sites by visiting ancient locations and enjoy the world- famous Franconian wine.

We are looking forward to welcome you in Würzburg and to experience a scientifically and personally enriching meeting.

Yours sincerely,

Prof. Dr. S. Dazert Prof. Dr. Dr. h. c. R. Hagen

Her scientific and clinical interest is otology were she holds a PhD on Eustachian tube function and tympanic membrane retraction. Dr. Bunne was trained in middle ear surgery by descendents of the Palva school, Finland and by colleagues at Uppsala Akademiska Sjukhus, Sweden. By means of grants, she spent periods at the House Ear Clinic, L.A. and Children’s Hospital, Pittsburgh (Profs. Bluestone and Casselbrandt), and with Profs Desaulty and Deguine in Lille, France. Cochlear implantation is since then a major field of interest.

Dr.MichaelGluth is a consultant in the Division of Otology & Neurotology and co-director of the Skull Base Surgery Center at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences. His practice consists entirely of ear and skull base disease with particular interests in cholesteato-ma, middle ear/mastoid surgery, skull base tumors, and adult cochlear implantation. Dr. Gluth is a native of Houston, and a graduate of the University of Texas Medical School (MD). He completed specialty training in otolaryn-gology-head & neck surgery at the Mayo Clinic and a fellowship in otology & skull base surgery at the Ear Science Institute Australia with Professor Marcus Atlas in Perth.
