HOLY CHILD PARISH BRIDGEVILLE, PENNSYLVANIA

God of the covenant, you give us your very self in the Body and Blood of your Son, Jesus. May our eating and drinking these gifts

help us live in ways that make a return to you for all the good you have done for us.

The Body and Blood of Christ: Faith has many important facets that are effective in our lives. Prayer and worship connect us to the God who created us and who daily gives us purpose and provides

for us. Times of community and fellowship unite us with our family in faith to realize that we are not alone on our journey of love with God. Outreach and charity put our faith into action so that we can be the hands and heart of Jesus in the world and provide for the needs of others. Yet, at the heart of our faith, its essential foundation, is the gift of God himself to his people, the Eucharist. The Eucharist is the memorial of God’s great act of love for us, the death and resurrection of his Son, Jesus. The Eucharist is the Body and Blood of Christ made truly present so that we might be nourished to do the work of God in the world. The Eucharist is the source of our life as people of faith and that to which we return all that we have received in thanksgiving to God.

Inspired by this Feast of Corpus Christi and as we journey On Mission for The Church Alive! may our love for the Eucharist increase so that our faith may remain strong in the midst of change. Visit onmissionchurchalive.org to learn more and to stay informed.

Corpus Christi Eucharistic Procession: Please join us this Sunday, June 3rd after the Noon Mass for the Procession of our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament from St. Barbara Parish to Holy Child Parish. The procession will end with a period of adoration and benediction at Holy Child Church. Afterwards, everyone is invited outside for a light picnic lunch. A shuttle service will be provided for the return to St. Barbara Church.

Reflecting on the Word A mother asked me, “How can I explain the Body of Christ to my second grader? She thinks dinking blood is ‘yucky.’” I encouraged her to make clear that her daugh-ter would be drinking wine that we believe is the Blood of Christ, his very life force. He becomes our “blood broth-er.” We drink what tastes like wine, but faith tells us is something more. That seemed to help. Taking our sym-bols literally misses the point. Adapting Pope Francis’ words from Laudato Si’ can help: Rather than a problem to be solved, our liturgical symbols, like the world, are joyful mysteries to be contemplated with gladness and praise. Blood gives life and can harm life. Transfusions offer healing, yet blood can carry diseases that are harmful. Untested blood can pass them on. By sprinkling the peo-ple with the blood offered to God in sacrifice, Moses binds them to do what they promise: “All that the Lord has said we will heed and do.” By sharing the Passover cup with his disciples, saying, “This is my blood of the cove-nant,” Jesus binds them and us to his cleansing sacrifice, to become what we drink. Our “Amen” to the Blood of Christ unites us with Jesus from the inside out. He mingles his lifeblood with ours so that we can transfuse the world with the sacrifice that rec-onciles us with God and with each other. Our “Amen” also commits us to pouring out our lives in sacrificial love for others, just as eating the Body of Christ commits us to becoming broken in service. What a gift! What a chal-lenge! This drinking and eating is dangerous, for we promise to heed and do all that he taught and to cleanse ourselves of whatever keeps us from living Jesus com-pletely. We become his blood brothers and sisters, united with all God’s people. Contemplate this joyful mystery and live with gladness and praise by sharing this wonder-ful sacrament. It all leads up to the outpouring of grace upon the Church to occur with the ordination of four men to the diaconate at 10:00 AM. No cost. Please email [email protected] to register.

Sunday Contributions For May 27, 2018: Due to early bulletin deadlines, all contribution totals for last week will be posted in the next bulletin. Thank you one and all for your continued generosity and support of our parish community.

A Family Perspective (by Bud Ozar): One gets the impression there was always a lot of sharing, discussion and learning during the many meals Jesus and the disciples ate together. How does this compare to the meals in your home? Today’s gospel challenges us to make our meals more than physical functions and more a time for sharing.
