HOLY CHILD PARISH BRIDGEVILLE, PENNSYLVANIA

Giver of all that is good, thank you for the gift of life this day. Help me to live it in your service and thus to feed others so that they know that you are near.

Preserve the Unity of the Spirit through the Bond of Peace: Saint Paul’s letter to the Ephesians, from which the second reading at Mass this weekend is taken, emphasizes the unity of the

Church. It is not written solely to the Christian community in Ephesus, but to the worldwide Church united to Jesus Christ her head and shepherd. Yet this focus on unity is not out of concern for the Church herself, but instead as the means for making God’s plan of salvation known throughout the world. Some ask how the changes the On Mission for The Church Alive! initiative is bringing about can lead to growth and strength for the Church of Pittsburgh. The answer is that we are being invited to work hard and pray even harder to be united in faith as we come together to form new parish communities. There will be challenges ahead, but let us listen to the wisdom of Saint Paul as we “bear with one another through love” and focus our hearts on what unites us in faith: “one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all.” Visit onmissionchurchalive.org to learn more and to stay informed.

Second Collection at all Masses next weekend will be our monthly Building Maintenance. This collection helps our parish continue to keep our buildings repaired and updated. Please be as generous as possible.

Registration is Coming Soon! CCD Classes will begin on September 9 & 10. Registration for all sessions will be held August 8, 13 & 22 from 6:00 to

8:00 PM in Holy Child Gym. Registration forms will be available via email and by the main doors of the church beginning August 1st. Our program is also in need of help. Please consider teaching the young children of our growing parish by being a catechist or aide. If interested, please call Liz Hand at 412-221-6514.

Magnificat Pittsburgh Prayer Breakfast: Ladies, come to the Prayer Breakfast on August 25 from 9 AM to Noon at the Double Tree by Hilton, Cranberry Twp. Hear dynamic speaker Dr. Carol Razza who will minister to you and tell her story of God’s work to free her from the lies that put her in a place of fear and shame. Cost of the breakfast is $23. To register call Kay, 724-772-6749 or Pam, 412-461-8906 or go to www.magnificatpittsburgh.org. Registration deadline is August 17.

Reflecting on the Word

The compassion of God that led Jesus to teach the crowd in last week’s Gospel from Mark finds him feeding the large crowd in today’s Gospel from John. The Gospel of Mark is so short that we have six weeks of readings from John’s Bread of Life Discourse as rich food for us in Year B. Elisha used the barley loaf offering from the first fruits of the man from Baal-shalishah to feed a hundred people in today’s first reading. Similarly, Jesus takes what is available and uses it to feed over five thousand people in today’s Gospel. The lesson for us seems too obvious at first. Take what you have, your first fruits, not your lefto-vers. Thank God for what you have. And then feed others using those resources. It sounds too simple, so simple that we forget the power of this obvious example. When we live this lesson, we often discover that there is more than enough to satisfy the hungers of the human heart and our physical needs, too. Following the examples of Elisha and Jesus asks us to change our focus. Focus on what we have, not what we lack. Develop an attitude of gratitude. Discover that we often have enough and more. As a meditation I read taught me, enough is a feast. The virtues named in the Letter to the Ephesians—humility, gentleness, patience, forbearance through love, unity, and peace—also provide enough for a feast. One could spend an entire retreat chewing on their meaning and role in life. Chew on them today. Focus your mind’s eye on the virtues you have. Thank God for such rich food. Then see how the hand of the Lord feeds you and that God is near to all who cry out in truth. Living the Word Scripture Reflections and Commentaries for Sun-days and Holy Days. Year B

The Writing Group will resume meeting twice a month in August. Dates are August 7 and 21 at 10-11 AM in St. Barbara Social Hall. If inter-ested or have questions, contact Judy DePalma at [email protected] or 412-498-5417.

EMEs = Extraordinary Ministers of the Eucharist

A Family Perspective (by Bud Ozar): In today’s gos-pel Jesus tells us: “Do not work for what perishes.” Give your life to what endures such as the family history you are creating, the love and mutual respect which bonds you to-gether, the memories you share and the forgiveness gener-ously given. These are the true treasures that are worth working and dying for.
