  • HOLY CHILD PARISH BRIDGEVILLE, PENNSYLVANIA

Loving and merciful God, when we were baptized, you made us your beloved daughters and sons. You are always for us. May our Lenten practices help us believe

that more fully and transform us to know the life that comes from you alone.

It Is Good That We Are Here: As Jesus was transfigured in dazzling white with Moses and Elijah on Mount Tabor the Apostles do not want the moment to end. We can only imagine what it was like to

see Jesus in splendor and glory and can also understand the Apostles’ desire to stay there for ever. After all, isn’t that what we anticipate heaven to be like? Yet, days before, these same Apostles wanted nothing to do with Jesus telling them that he must suffer and die and that they must take up their crosses and follow him to be his disciples. Do we, at times, want all the glory without any of the work and suffering? During this Lenten season it is very good that we are with Jesus in his suffering, so that we might be with him one day in his glory. The same is true of our journey On Mission for The Church Alive! While there may be great challenges in forming new, vibrant communities of faith, the new life possible for our parishes will shine brightly and be reflected in our lives. May we remain devoted to prayer, fasting and good works this Lent so that our hearts will be made ready for all that lies in store for us. Visit onmissionchurchalive.org to learn more and to stay informed.

Lenten Speaker Series: Unless You Turn: Join us tomorrow night, Monday, February 26, at St. Barbara Church for the second of our three Lenten Speaker Events featuring Dawn Eden Goldstein STD. Dr. Goldstein, the convert from Judaism who, as Dawn Eden, is author of My Peace I Give You: Healing Sexual Wounds with the Help of the Saints and Remembering God’s Mercy, will share how she discovered that Jesus the Divine Physician can shed his healing light upon our darkest memories. Refreshments to follow.

Parish Share 2018: The one time gifts and pledges are beginning to come into the parish office. Once we make our goal of $84,212.00 all money over and above that amount will go to our Parish. If you have not yet received this year’s mailing, please call the parish office. Thank you in advance for your continued support.

Youth Group: All High Schoolers are invited to join us for the Festival of Praise as we travel to The Franciscan University of Steubenville on Saturday, March 3. We will meet at St. Barbara Hall at 5:10 PM for a quick dinner, then carpool to Steubenville. You will join 600 other students for dynamic worship and compelling speaker, Chris Stefanick. We plan to return to St. Barbara Hall by 9:45 PM. No Cost. Please bring your permission form with you. Questions, or for more details, please email [email protected]

2018 Baby Bottle Campaign: Holy Child Christian Mothers will be handing out baby bottles after all Masses next weekend, March 3 & 4. Take one home and return it filled with your spare change on the weekend of March 17 & 18. Your “change” will support “Human Coalition”, which operates the Pittsburgh Women’s Clinic, formerly known as the Pregnancy Resource Center of the South Hills.

Holy Child / St. Barbara Pro-Life Group is participating in the Forty Days for Life Lent Campaign, a peaceful prayer vigil advocating for rights of the unborn and support for expecting parents. St. Barbara/Holy Child Pro-Life Group is participating in two-hour prayer vigil shifts on Sunday, March 18 from 3-5 PM at Planned Parenthood location in Downtown Pittsburgh. All Holy Child and St. Barbara Parishioners are welcome and encouraged to join us. We will meet in Holy Child parking lot at 2:15 PM that day to carpool to and from the prayer vigil. Also, note that 5-10 minute info sessions will take place following weekend Masses at St. Barbara and Holy Child on March 10-11 to provide greater insight on the mission and purpose of Forty Day For Life!

Simple Soup Supper & Bake Sale: Helping Hands will be sponsoring a Simple Soup Supper on Saturday, March 10 at St. Barbara Hall from 5:00 to 6:30 PM. Supper will consist of soup of your choice from the menu, roll and beverage. Take out will be available. Desserts may be purchased from the Bake Sale Table. Presale of tickets will be sold after Mass at St. Barbara Church March 3 & 4 or may be purchased at the door. Cost per person is $5.00. All proceeds will go to the Bridgeville Area Food Bank. Please help us by making your favorite soup or chili brought to the hall in a crockpot (labeled with your name and name of soup). Dessert and bake sale items will also be needed. Please plate desserts in individual servings ready for sale. All soup/dessert donations should be brought to the Hall on Saturday, March 10 between 2:30 & 3:30 PM. For further information, please contact Pam Fantoni at 412-276-3266.

Reflecting on the Word How far would you go to express your love for God? As far as Abraham, willing to offer his son? As far as God, who took on every human limitation, except sin, to be-come one with us? As far as Jesus, who offered himself to God for us? Baptism joined us to Christ and made us God’s beloved daughters and sons. We’ve already died to sin to be alive for God. How will you live out that love? Every Second Sunday of Lent offers an account of the Transfiguration as a foretaste of the Resurrection we cele-brate at Easter. It is meant to motivate us to continue our Lenten journey so that we keep looking for God’s rainbow present amid the storms and sin of daily life. To find that rainbow we must face death and name sin. By seeking and living God’s will, we are transformed. I live with diabetes. The discipline of counting carbs and doing exercise keeps me healthy. By dying to having whatever I want, whenever I want it, my health is trans-formed. People in recovery live one day at a time. They die to the substances that they abused. The discipline of attending meetings and living honestly transforms them. Obedience to a new life discipline can offer freedom. Abraham and Jesus chose obedience to God, and by of-fering themselves totally, found freedom in God’s pres-ence and transforming love. The same freedom is offered to us. When we live for the God who is always for us, nothing can be against us. How far will you go to express your love for God? Will you die to self and take on the dis-cipline of Lent? Listen for God’s voice. Look for God’s Lenten rainbow. Be transformed, one day at a time. Living the Word Scripture Reflections and Commentaries for Sun-days and Holy Days. Year B

Paul members from around the country on their spiritual growth journey through service to people and families in need. From our home visits to assistance with rent, utilities and food, we see the face of Christ in the people we serve. For more information, please call 412-221-5213.

Softball Team: Holy Child would like to form a second softball team in The Chartiers Valley Church Softball League. Players and coaches needed. Cost is $60.00 per player. To join, call Pete Rupnik at 724-207-0929.

A Family Perspective (by Bud Ozar): The apostles thought they knew Jesus, but when he changed in front of them at the Transfiguration, they were “afraid.” In families we cannot freeze relationships because change and growth are inevitable. Children grow up, parents grow old and spouses change. Transfigurations are all around us and within us. Relationships can only grow when we embrace the new and let go of the old.

Princess Tea Party: Calling all Princesses ages 2-9. The Royal Event will take place on April 7 at Bishop Canevin H. S. (Gym), from 10:30 AM to 12:00 Noon. Admission includes having your hair, nails & make-up done; Craft corner; enjoying Tea & Cookies; meeting several Disney Princesses for autographs & a Sing-A-Long. $25.00 per Princess (adults are free). Please email [email protected] or call 724-888-2723. Reservations are required by April 2nd. All proceeds benefit CURESEARCH-fighting Childhood Cancer.
