Sign up for a CASA account in CourseWare at http://www.casa.uh.edu.
CASA refers to both a website and a tutoring center (located on the second floor of Garrison Gym)
If you have not taken a math class that uses CASA before, you need to set up your
account. If you already set up a CASA account for another class or the placement exams, you do not have to create another account. Just log in after classes start, and you will have access to any CASA courses for which you are enrolled.
If you have a problem registering with CASA, first make sure that you are enrolled (you can’t get an account if you are not enrolled), then click on the “Email Tech Support” link on the CASA webpage. If nothing else works, go to 221A Garrison.
You should set up your account right after the first class session. Late CourseWare registration may result in grades being lost!
You will use CourseWare to se your grades and to opt-out from the Final.
Homework
List of the homework problems and deadlines can be found on my website.
You will use EMCF (stands for Electronic Multiple Choice Form) to turn in your homework. They are numbered. Assigned homework is generally due at midnight of the day after the lecture on the material. Homework must be submitted 10 minutes prior to the deadline in an online EMCF in your CourseWare account.
Weekly Quizzes There will be weekly online quizzes on the “Online Assignments” tab of your course site on CourseWare. You may take each quiz up to 20 times; your highest score for the period will be the grade recorded for the quiz. You must wait 10 minutes between attempts.
You may help with your quizzes in CASA.
There will NOT be an Amnesty Period at the end of the semester on quizzes. Once a quiz is expired it is over for the semester. Please make sure you complete each quiz before the expiration deadline.
No quiz scores are dropped.
You need to score 100% on the Course Policies Quiz to gain access to other quizzes.
Daily In-Class Poppers
Daily in class poppers will be given each class starting the 3rd week of classes.
Questions on poppers are multiple choice.
There are NO make-ups for the poppers.
It is student’s responsibility to bubble in the information carefully and completely. Incomplete, misbubbled or illegible forms will not be graded.
Popper forms are sold in the book store and they are SECTION specific!
Tests There will be reviews before each exam.
All exams are in CASA Testing Center.
See the calendar for the dates.
No make-up tests. Your final exam grade will be used to substitute any missed test
grades or the lowest test grade. Missing more than one test will result in a 0 for the second (and any subsequent) test grade.
Final
Final is mandatory and comprehensive unless you are eligible for OPT-OUT.
Opt-out: At the end of the semester if your grade is 80% or higher you may choose not to take the Final and keep your current grade as your grade for the class.
If your grade is below 80% you MUST take the final.
More details on the opt-out will be given later.

Calculator Review
Some Symbols to keep in mind:
“^” is called the caret symbol. This is how you raise something to a power.
Example: 53 = 5 ∗ 5 ∗ 5 = 125
𝜋 = 3.14159 … This is called “pi”.
𝑒1 = 2.71828 … This is called the Exponential Function.
Some Rules to Keep In Mind:
Rounding
* We generally round to two decimal places, there will be times when it is
appropriate to use fewer or more decimal places.
* We round down for numbers 0-4.
* We round up for numbers 5-9.
PEMDAS
* P: Parenthesis
* E: Exponents
*M: Multiplication
*D: Division
*A: Additions
*S: Subtraction
To let the calculator know that a group of numbers all go together, we use
parentheses.

Types of Interest:
Simple Interest on a loan means that you wait until the end of the loan before
calculating or paying interest.
(More Commonly Known) Compound Interest is when at certain periods the
interest you have incurred is calculated and added to your debt. Banks use this type
of interest.
Monthly Interest Rate is when the amount owed is calculated each month.
Automobile loans, and home mortgages. Interest is compounded monthly.
APR: The APR is the measure of the annual interest rate charged on consumer loans
The value of r = 𝐴𝑃𝑅

Examples
If you borrow $5000 from a bank that charges 7%, how much money will you owe after 10
years?
Calculate how much you owe using:
a) Simple Interest :
b) Compound Interest:

Scientific Notation: used to express really small or really big numbers
2.7 𝑋 104 = 27,000
2.7 𝑋 10−4 = 0.00027
𝐸𝑛 means to move the decimal point 𝑛 places to the right.
𝐸 − 𝑛 means to move the decimal point 𝑛 places to the left.
