ACTiVE, STrONGHEALTHY, HAPPY KiDSSaturday, April 309 a.m.-NoonHealthy Kids Day is a YMCA initiative that’s designed to raise awareness about the importance of establishing healthy habits in kids at a young age. The goal is to encourage more kids to stay moving and learning, so they can stay active all summer long—which is critical during out-of-school time.

Healthy Kids Day is a free event that is open to the entire community. Festivities include a health and wellness expo featuring local vendors, kids games, exciting prizes, giveaways and YMCA membership specials.

Those who agree with the mission of the YMCA, but choose not to take advantage of year-round facility use, may purchase a program membership. Program Members pay a low fee each year in order to be able to register for YMCA programs, but pay as much as twice the cost for YMCA programs and pay daily to use YMCA facilities. Program Members must also wait until two weeks before the start of each session to register for programs.

Program Members who choose to become Full Members will receive a credit for the remaining portion of their program membership, as well as a credit for the difference between the Full Member and Program Member rates for any programs in which they are currently enrolled, if the membership upgrade occurs within the first two weeks of the session.

Payment of Membership FeesMembership fees are not refundable and are payable through a monthly bank draft. The monthly amount is debited electronically from a checking account (debit or credit card also accepted) on the 15th or 28th of each month. Drafts are ongoing until cancelled in writing by the primary member, no less than 10 days prior to the scheduled draft date. Cancellations are accepted by fax, e-mail, mail or in person. Those who prefer to pay their membership fee annually may do so by cash, check or credit card. A $25 fee will be charged for membership fees that are returned and unable to be processed. Members who change their billing or payment methods, including reissued and expired credit cards, should notify the Membership Desk to avoid any interruption in services.

Membership Cards and Photo iDsIt is necessary to present your membership card for admittance to the YMCA. Daily visitors and members who forget their cards must present photo identification and may be denied access. There is a $5 fee for replacing lost or damaged cards. Full Family Members using Kidz Korner services must have their cards and their children’s cards when checking in.

Why the YThe Y is an association of people who have committed to put Christian principles into practice through programs that build healthy spirit, mind and body for all people, regardless of their ability to pay. We are a non-profit, charitable organization established to provide programs and services to youth, adults and families in order to strengthen the community. The YMCA is funded locally. Funds raised through contributions, endowments and membership fees are used to provide services in Will, Grundy and part of Kendall Counties.

MEMBEr SPOTLiGHTMeet Erin and Willis

Seven-year-old Willis Terry is a true Y Kid. The Y is where he was first introduced to sports such as soccer and basketball. It’s where he and his Grandpa have made memories swimming in the pool. It’s the place that provides him with before and after school care each day.

“Based on the experiences that we’ve had at the YMCA, I would suggest it to anybody,” said Erin Davis, Willis’ mother. “For me, the biggest benefit has been the sense of security. The Y has the best child care that’s been offered to me. It works around your schedule and around your income. They understand that life happens.”

With the assistance of the Y’s scholarship program, Erin is able to send Willis to Kidz Zone at Walker’s Grove Elementary School. A single parent, Erin works full-time as a restaurant manager, while also pursuing a bachelor’s degree in business management and human resources.

Because of the Y’s Kidz Zone programs, Erin can go to work each day knowing that Willis is in good hands. When she attends classes at night, she can rest assured that Willis has completed his schoolwork.

Erin credits the Y as a big part of Willis’ growth over the years. When he first came to the Y, Willis was typically pretty shy. Now, Erin says, Willis’ confidence and social skills are greatly improved.

“Compared to other care places, the YMCA has values to make sure that you see your child grow,” Erin said. “I don’t see the Y being out of our lives anytime soon. We’re going to be here a while.”

As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit charitable organization, the Greater Joliet Area YMCA provides hundreds of thousands of dollars in scholarship funds each year to those in need of financial assistance. To learn more about our People Helping People Scholarship Program, please contact your local branch.

iGNiTE YOur PASSiONVolunteer Opportunities at the YMCA

The generosity of others is at the core of the Y’s existence. It is only through the support of our hundreds of thousands of volunteers and public and private donors that we are able to give back to the communities we serve.

Volunteers at the Greater Joliet Area YMCA:• Lead our Board of Directors, Board of Trustees,

Committees and Branch Advisory Councils• Raise funds to ensure the Y is accessible to all

members of our community• Plan our annual Giving Gala• Coach our youth sports teams• Motivate and support youths in our teen programs

to help them build the character strengths, skills and relationships that lead to positive behaviors, better health, smart life choices, and the pursuit of higher education and goals

• Participate in opportunities to give back and support our neighbors through community service projects and events

Our volunteers play an important role in the success, quality and quantity of the programs we offer. We welcome and appreciate anyone 16 years of age or older who volunteers his or her time and expertise. A background check must be completed before volunteers are allowed to participate in any Y program or activity.
