2015 Alcohol Beverages Containing Stimulants Current Practices by Signatories to the Beer, Wine and Spirits Producers’ Commitments to Reduce Harmful Drinking

As part of a commitment to provide consumer information and responsible product innovation, leading global producers of beer, wine and spirits have agreed that they will not:

“… produce any beverage alcohol products that contain excessive amounts of added stimulants, such as caffeine, guarana and taurine, and will not market any beverage alcohol product or promote any beverage alcohol combination as delivering energising or stimulating effects.”

This commitment is part of a broader set of actions in five areas, designed to strengthen and expand existing efforts and contribute to reducing the harmful use of alcohol in the signatories’ capacity as producers, distributors, marketers, and sellers of beer, wine, and spirits. SIGNATORY COMPANIES REPORTING NO PRODUCTS CONTAINING STIMULANTS Carlsberg Carlsberg’s international portfolio does not include any products with added stimulants.

Molson Coors Molson Coors has no alcohol products with added stimulants, and no plans to create such a product in any market.

SABMiller SABMiller does not have any products in its portfolio with added stimulants, including caffeine. With regard to caffeinated alcoholic beverages, SABMiller’s Product Portfolio Policy states:

“Based on the current regulatory and public health concerns, the evolving medical evidence, and the associated reputation and legal risks, caffeinated alcohol beverages are not permitted.”

In addition, the company’s Policy on Commercial Communication refers to provisions for not promoting brands based on the stimulating effect.

The Code for Commercial Communications (October 2015) states:

“Commercial Communications should not create the impression that consumption of beverages enhances mental ability or physical performance or has an energizing effect, e.g. when engaging in activities requiring concentration in order to be safely executed.”

The Code also includes an article on responsible product innovation, with specific provisions on stimulants:

“Pernod Ricard should not produce any beverage alcohol product that contains excessive amount of added stimulants1 and should not market any beverage alcohol product or promote any beverage alcohol combination as delivering energizing or stimulating effects.

Do not initiate joint promotions with energy drinks and marketed as such.”
