Nexen’s New Graduate Program Provides a World of Opportunity

At Nexen Inc., we don’t just look for the right person for the job; we want the best and the brightest! But let’s face it, when it comes to attracting and retaining top talent there’s a lot of competition in the world of global energy exploration and production. Nexen, a Canadian-based upstream oil and gas company, succeeds in this competitive world by attracting talented young people at the beginning of their careers and giving them the tools, resources and support to grow both personally and professionally.

About NexenHeadquartered in Calgary, Alberta, Nexen’s resource base – conventional oil and gas, oil sands and shale gas – is as diverse as the

company’s geographic reach. Nexen explores and develops energy resources in some of the world’s most significant basins, including the UK North Sea, offshore West Africa, the Gulf of Mexico, and Western Canada.

Nexen has approximately 3,000 employees, with more than half working in Canada. The company is the recipient of many top employer awards and has been recognized for its training and skills development, employee engagement and community investment.

New Graduate ProgramOne of Nexen’s signature human resource initiatives is its New Graduate Program, a development program offered to new and

recent graduates in various disciplines, including engineering and geoscience.

Young professionals learn on the job by rotating through different areas of the company and working on high-profile projects. Assigned mentors provide coaching and feedback to each of the graduates. Training is an integral part of the program which includes a CDN$7,500 corporate training budget per graduate per year. Together, these components develop technically skilled, confident, motivated and innovative employees who contribute to Nexen’s ongoing success.

“After researching and attending the recruitment presentation, I knew I wanted to work for Nexen,” says Doug Deugo, EIT. “I felt that Nexen’s New Graduate Program would provide me with the structured development plan I was looking for.”

Doug Deugo, EITDoug Deugo joined Nexen in 2009 after graduating from the University of Calgary with a BSc in Mechanical Engineering. Now in his third-year of the New Graduate Program, Doug currently works as a Production Engineer-in-Training with Nexen’s Operations and Production Engineering team where he is responsible for overseeing the production of roughly 2,400 shallow gas wells in southern Alberta and Saskatchewan.

Throughout his time in the New Graduate Program, Doug has had the opportunity to work and live in a number of different locations – gathering “a load of

great experience” along the way. Add in the technical courses and field trips and he says he’s “benefited greatly from the program.”

“The experience I’ve received from working at Nexen has put me ahead of the game,” he says. “Not only has the New Graduate Program given me the chance to experience a few different roles, its also given me enough creditable work experience to apply for my professional engineer designation.”

“In the end, Nexen is a company with integrity and a global reputation for safe, reliable and environmentally conscious development, which was enough to convince me that this was a company I would be proud to work for.”

IntegrityAt Nexen, we don’t just talk about integrity, we live it. Our culture is defined by the actions of our employees; we set high expectations and provide a variety of resources to help our employees make responsible decisions.

CNOOC-Nexen AcquisitionOn July 23, 2012, we announced the proposed US$15.1-billion acquisition of our company by CNOOC Limited – China’s largest producer of offshore crude oil and natural gas and one of the largest oil and gas exploration and production companies in the world. Our hiring plans have not changed. We continue to recruit talented, high-performing individuals, and CNOOC intends to retain employees and will inherit Nexen’s remuneration and benefits packages.

Student Employment OpportunitiesIn addition to New Graduate programs, Nexen has four Canadian employment programs for students to consider.

Engineering Internship Program – paid internships for engineering students lasting 12- or 16-months. Students develop technical skills which complement their academic learning.

Co-op Program – Lasting four- or eight-months, Nexen’s paid co-op opportunities allow students from various disciplines to gain practical experience and contribute to projects in their field of study.

Technical Summer Student Program – Four-month paid program aimed at students studying engineering, geoscience, geographic information systems and land disciplines. Students must be in their second or third year of their program to be eligible to apply.

Summer Student Program – Four-month program provides students with paid experience by performing a variety of tasks and projects. Open to all post-secondary disciplines. ■

relationships which are made clear in the company’s How We Work: Our Integrity Guide. Working with integrity enables us to access capital and countries that might otherwise be difficult, strengthens the work we do with our stakeholders and helps us attract and retain talented employees.

Top Employer RatingNexen was recognized as one of Canada’s Top 100 Employers and Alberta’s Top Employers for 2012 by Media Corp. In fact, Media Corp describes Nexen’s has having “above-average” financial benefits and compensation. This includes:• Competitive base salaries,• Long-term incentives,• Flexible health plan benefits,• A profit-sharing plan, and• The choice of a defined benefit pension plan

or a defined contribution pension plan.

Nexen also offers an Employee Recognition Program that awards bonus payments of up to $5,000 to individuals who contribute beyond their basic responsibilities. ■

“I love not having a job lined up and stressing about where I am going to work after the school year’s done”

CareerLink: Your Future Starts Here

As you may or may not have heard, Career Services at the University of Calgary has recently launched a new online recruitment database, CareerLink. With the implementation of Ca-reerLink, students will now have better access to job postings, information session sched-ules, career fair details, and other recruitment event information. All students enrolled at the University of Calgary can use CareerLink by visiting the Career Services website, www.ucalgary.ca/careers/, and following the CareerLink prompts. Your login for CareerLink will be the same as your myUofC ID and password.

How can I use CareerLink to its full capacity?

A 15 minute weekly or bi-weekly visit to CareerLink is all it takes to keep up to date with what recruitment activities is occurring on-campus. Whether it is flagging an interesting job that you may want to apply for in the future, visiting the event calendar to see which orga-nizations are hosting information sessions, or using the Student Resources page, there are multiple avenues worth exploring on this database aimed at connecting you with your dream employer.

Final Pieces of Advice?

Start the job hunt early. Seriously. Yes, you. Okay, it is alright to enjoy your first few weeks back at university and overindulge in debilitating frothy beverages – that is an important part of university too. But getting a jump on your fellow classmates when it comes to applying to summer/new graduate positions is absolutely vital to you securing a great job. Keep your eyes out in September and October for those great opportunities in the summer! That’s right – it’s early. You will thank yourself later when you have a sweet job lined for the summer by mid-November and your buddies are stressing over where all the jobs went by the time March rolls around.

All the best to you and your search. Sincerely,

Your dedicated Career Services team.

- Said no one, ever.

Careerlink is accessed through ‘My U of C’ under ‘Campus Services.

An Active

Job Search

David Cataford, BA, CCDPCareer Specialist on the Career

Success Team

Looking for your first meaningful job can be a drag, and is one of the most challenging things you will do in your adult life. Here are some simple suggestions to help you in your job search.

First, you should have a positive attitude. During your job search you will get hung up on, you will receive rejection emails and letters, and you will be told that another candidate was recruited with more experience than you. Treat these rejections as mini-triumphs, as the job search process is great experience with many lessons to be learned, which will bring you closer to securing employment. When children learn to walk they fall, but they get right back up again, and I encourage you to do the same throughout your exploration for that perfect opportunity. Trust me, everyone has experienced rejection, and instead of becoming discouraged, it is important to learn from the process and look at it as being one step closer to your dream job.

Remaining positive and reminding yourself of the invaluable skills you can provide to the workplace is important when searching for employment. Know exactly what your skills and strengths are and be prepared to share, discuss and provide examples of applying these skills in the workplace. As a Career Specialist, I provide guidance to students in conducting an active job search, as I believe it is important in conducting an effective one. After you determine what direction you want to go in your career, the next step is to grow your network and begin contacting professionals that can assist you. Like it or not, most jobs and job leads are found through networking, and that is reality.

Finding that first job may be hard, but finding your second job is a little easier and it will continue to get easier as long as you keep networking, remain active in your job search, and stay positive. ■

place holder for halliburton?

You’ve found it. That great job description that entices you to submit an applica-tion they just won’t be able to refuse. Now, what are they really looking for? Well-

prepared resumes and cover letters are those that are best targeted, and will get you through the screening process. Understanding what the employer wants, through their posting, is the critical first step.

You’ll begin by determining if you have enough of the qualifications listed to create a competitive application. Remember, their ad is describing the ideal candidate, who may not exist. The successful applicant may have 80% of the desired skills listed. So if you’ve got the majority of them, give it a shot.

“Never underestimate what you’ve got to offer,” advises Neil Horton, Human Resource Consultant with Children and Youth Services, Alberta Government. “Don’t exaggerate ei-ther; an HR person can recognize that right away. It’s a balancing act.” The obvious next steps include reading the posting through again, slowly. Take particular note of the clos-ing date and time, and aim to apply at least a day early. Online systems can be inter-rupted and if you’re submitting hard copy, it could be the worst traffic day yet!

Now, pull out your highlighter . . . as you scan the skills, experience and qualifications you may see key phrases repeated. Create two columns, listing the employer’s needs in one and your competencies in the other. This will help you to prioritize in writing your documents, and keep you focused on what they are communicating.

You should also consider the following, which may be less obvious:

Reading a Job PostingWhat qualifications do they really need?

Whether or not their requirements are firm. A recruiter from the Public Service Commis-sion, Federal Government, recently told us that their specifications are absolute. Many however, are flexible on requirements. Ken Clarke, Fitness Centre Director at the Glencoe Club shares, “If you don’t have one qualification, show some others that may be rel-evant.”

Look at the language – ‘Must have’ does not mean the same as ‘desired’ . . . ‘Working knowledge’ is more basic than ‘highly proficient’ and ‘entry level’ may indicate someone in their first couple of years after graduation, whereas ‘experienced’ usually indicates three or more years.

Include the exact wording or key phrases, as large companies do utilize scanning soft-ware to reduce the number of applications reviewed by precious human hours. Be careful though, to add your specific experience, back up your claims with evidence and not just ‘parrot’ their phrases.

What you won’t see in many instances is information regarding salary. You can research typical ranges for similar jobs at such sites as www.alis.alberta.ca or www.wowjobs.ca.

Remember, your task is to make it easy for them to see what a terrific match you are! Thorough research and preparation can give you the competitive edge, and more confidence when you land that interview. ■
