We’re strategically focused on three businesses: conventional oil and gas, oil sands and shale gas. With a high-quality asset base and significant growth on the horizon, we’re well-positioned to deliver long-term shareholder value.

MAkiNg the cut At NexeN

Working at Nexen was a goal Nicole Powell set for herself about three years ago when she was a student at U of C. “I had talked to people who worked at Nexen who had only great things to say about the company. So I did some more research about Nexen and quickly knew it was where I belonged,” she says. “I just felt it was right for me. One evening I was walking my dog in a downtown park near where I live. You can see the Nexen building from there. I said to myself ‘I’m going to work for that company.’ And here I am today.”

Nicole’s drive and determination were key to getting her the job she wanted. But how do you translate that into concrete action you can take in your own job search? We talked to Nicole and Jesse Gore, another U of C grad and Nexen recruit, to get their insights into what made them stand out in the crowd and helped them make the cut to join Nexen’s New Graduate employment program.

Nicole graduated with a combined degree in Psychology and Business from the U of C in 2011 and began working at Nexen in May 2011. She works in the Enterprise Supply Chain Solutions team as a purchasing coordinator involved in IT purchasing and contract administration. As part of the New Graduate program she will rotate through job assignments in a number of areas over the next three years, supported by mentorship and training.

Looking back on her job search, Nicole highlights these points:

Take the time before you apply. “I spent a lot of time at the career centre making sure my resume really reflected who I was. Get rid of peripheral junk. You might think it’s important but it doesn’t reflect what a corporation wants to know about you. I had things that I thought were just great in my resume, but my advisor told me to take them out. It was hard to take that criticism, but in the end I’m glad I did.”

Interview preparation is critical. ““A degree, while it takes a lot of work and dedication to achieve, is just a piece of paper and there

are lots of people looking for work who have degrees,” she says. “To stand out from the pack, you need to really identify what you can offer a company; what makes you unique. I took the time to think about what it was I really learned at school and then drilled down to identify how my educational experience could benefit a company. Also, prepare for the types of questions you know you’ll be asked. It’s easy to do this research and it pays off.”

Know your resume. “Your resume is what sells you at first glance. For that reason, you should know it like the back of your hand. If you had a job five years ago, you have to be able to answer specific questions about it – what skills you learned and how you’re maintaining them.”

Know the company. “Before the Nexen interview, I spent a lot of time on the website as well as doing other research. I dug deep and learned as much as I could about the company. If you care enough to invest your time and energy learning about the company it will pay off. In my interview, it came out that I knew about the closing of Nexen’s gas plant at Balzac. They were impressed.”

Jesse Gore joined Nexen in 2009 after graduating from Mechanical Engineering and having spent three summers working at Nexen as a summer student. As part of the New Graduate program, he has worked in five groups since joining the company and is now a production operations engineer in the Shale Gas and Tight Oil group.

“I wanted to get into the oil and gas industry and I wanted to be at one of the production companies,” says Jesse. “But I really didn’t know much about Nexen until my first summer with the company. After that, I knew this was where I wanted to be. I liked the environment and the training program is excellent – you get an amazing amount of experience in a short time.”

Jesse acknowledges that having summer experience at Nexen gave him an advantage when applying for full-time employment, but he notes that experience can come from all sorts of opportunities – not just at the company you want to work for. His advice includes:

Experience will set you apart. “Summer studentships and internship programs are great. Unless you are trying to finish quickly, I would take the extra time to get the experience that an internship offers, even if it’s in a related industry. Experience is experience, it will set you apart.”

Don’t discount smaller companies and the service industry. “Getting a job at one of the majors can be difficult right out of the gate. A lot of my friends worked in small companies first. Many of them gained a wide range of experience that is paying dividends down the road. Sometimes people overlook smaller companies because their focus is on the bigger companies.”

Companies have personalities – find the one that matches yours. “The key thing is to find a company that gels with your work style, your values and where you motivation is. Nexen is known for its commitment to ethics, integrity and sustainable business practices, as well as its support for a balance between work and personal life.”

Don’t put all your eggs in one basket. “People put a lot of confidence in getting a job at the company they worked for in the summer or did an internship with. You shouldn’t assume you’ll get that job because the numbers are not in your favour. I’ve seen people miss the boat on other jobs because they applied at only one company. I went to company websites and build up a list of companies that I’d want to work for. I kept my eye on them and applied to them all. Look early and look often.”

Keep in touch. “Stay connected to the people you worked with in the summer or during internships – not just the other students! Something might come through the grapevine.”

Make a great

A bad first impression is hard to change, so if you are meeting people at a career fair, a networking event or something more casual, be prepared and make sure you are remembered for the right reasons.

Start by dressing for the occasion. If you are at a formal event, wearing a suit works for both men and women. At events like career fairs, consider wearing business casual to help you stand out in a sea of jeans and t-shirts. For men this could be dress pants with a shirt and tie or a shirt and sweater and for women, dress pants or skirt with a jacket or sweater.

The next step is to say hello, shake hands firmly and offer a genuine smile while making eye contact. When meeting someone for the first time a brief introduction is a great way to get the conversation going. Think of this as a 30 second commercial or “elevator pitch” that provides a simple overview connecting your past, present and future. Here is an example:

“Hi, my name is Matthew and

I’m a third year chemistry

student. In the future I hope

to work in the field of drug

research and development but

at the moment I am looking

for part-time work that would

provide some type of related

experience. I currently work

in retail and have developed

strong customer services skills

that I think might be useful in

pharmaceutical sales.”

Your own intro should be tailored to the audience and may include both current and future goals depending on the situation. Remember, if people don’t know what you are looking for they can’t help you.

If you meet someone unfamiliar with your degree, be prepared to clearly describe some of the skills you are gaining. These could include critical thinking through multiple literature reviews, presentation skills from group projects, research, analysis or teamwork. All of these skills are transferable and are needed to be successful as employee as well as a student. It’s up to you to know your strengths and also to be able to explain clearly what you can bring to an employer and how you can help them.

Follow the suggestions mentioned; be polite, dress appropriately, have a great introduction and finally, LISTEN more than you speak and you can be confident that you are presenting yourself the best way possible - professionally and positively.
