MAKING THE CUT AT NEXEN

4 l 2010 SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING CAREER FAIR

Here are some helpful tips from Nexen’s recruitment team to help you get your foot in the door when applying for jobs:

Show us you’re well-rounded. While GPA is important, it’s not the fi rst aspect of your application we look at. We look at your work experience, community involvement, competitive sports, travel and leadership experience.

If you have a chance to visit a Nexen booth at a career fair, come and say, ‘Hi’. The fairs provide you a great chance to meet representatives of the company in a more informal setting.

When writing your application, always include a cover letter. They are your chance to differentiate yourself from your peers and stand out.

Spell check, spell check, spell check! A spelling or grammatical error is just giving the interviewer a reason to throw your resume into the “no” pile.

Tips for a great interview… BE ON TIME. Believe it or not, some candidates show up late! Needless to say this does not leave a good impression.

BE CONVERSATIONAL. The interviewers are trying to get to know you so expand on your responses past “yes” or “no”.

DO YOUR HOMEWORK on the company and be prepared with two or three questions to ask the interviewers. Read the company website to learn about its history and read recent news clippings. Knowing what’s happening with the company is impressive.

Dennis Melrose is another U of C alumnus who joined Nexen immediately after graduation. A geophysicist in Nexen’s Early Professional Development Program, Dennis found it was his experience in the fi eld that put him a cut above the rest when it came to recruitment season.

While attending U of C, Dennis obtained a Bachelor of Science in Geophysics and a Bachelor of Science in Geology. Through those programs, he had hands-on experience with fi eld school excursions around British Columbia and Alberta, regions that are now incredibly active in development for the oil and gas industry.

“The fi eld schools give you the opportunity to see a lot of really cool areas that are applicable to what you would see on the job,” says Dennis. “About 90 per cent of the jobs I have worked on since graduation are in Alberta or Northeast British Columbia.”

Dennis’s fi eld schools took him to areas around the Crowsnest Pass, Banff and Lake Louise. On the trips, he mapped geologic formations, interpreted seismic data and studied water sources for the regions. He considers himself lucky to have gained this experience before joining the workforce.

“When you attend schools on the east coast, you can learn about these formations and areas, and be

knowledgeable, but it’s nowhere near the experience of having seen and examined the rock up close,” he says.

After being introduced to Nexen at a U of C Career Fair, Dennis saw it as a company where he could grow and develop his skills. He introduced himself to the recruiters, then applied for the Early Professional Development Program online. And now after three years, Dennis continues to see a bright future ahead.

“I would like to do more geology work down the road, but I’m willing to take on whatever I’m given,” he says. “I want to learn as much as I can while I’m here, and I know my peers have the same mentality.”

Dennis Melrose, U of C Alumnus

Lavonne Zdunich, Senior Recruiter Nexen

Lavonne Zdunich, a senior recruiter for Nexen’s Early Professional Development Program, says it’s that attitude that helps applicants and new employees get ahead on the job.

“When I recruit, I always keep in mind that I am hiring for my peers at Nexen. I want to give them an individual that can do the job but is also a great team member,” she says. “Our employees are

a leading part of our corporate culture, so I always look for people who will go above and beyond to get the job done, and who see this as a place they really want to be both now, and in the future.”

WHAT I DID LAST SUMMER

8 l 2010 SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING CAREER FAIR

what I did last summerAt fi rst glance working as a labourer for a glass company doesn’t appear to be the ideal summer jobfor an entrepreneurial student completing his double Mechanical Engineering and Economics degrees. However, as Jona Szakacs discovered, there’s always an upside to every job.

Working as a shipper/receiver in the shop, as well as an installer out in the fi eld, Jona soon realized he was gaining practical knowledge and some very valuable skills. “Engineers are often criticized for being really good at drawing and making models but often misunderstand how things actually get put together or work in the real world.” Jona found this summer job helped him learn a lot of very useful information about general construction and also gain practical problem solving skills. Both the knowledge and skills he gained

were critical for making installations or projects work “even when unforeseen problems arise.”

In addition to problem solving Jona developed other transferable skills that he is now able to highlight and detail on his resume or in future interviews. His customer service experience honed his interpersonal skills. “After talking to customers on the phone as well as in person in their homes, I was able to develop good people skills”

Working with breakable, expensive materials in the confi ned spaces of high-end homes, Jona learned quickly the value of attention to detail and “the difference between doing a job right and just getting it done.” It also forced him to think a few steps ahead in the process helping him to gain “the ability to foresee where a problem may arise and how to avoid it before it does”.

Jona found this unadvertised summer job through networking. “My father is a tile setter and often does work for this glass company. Through casual jobsite conversation my dad mentioned to the owner that I was looking for a job. As it turned out they were looking to hire and later that week I got a call for an interview. I started the next week.” Remember if people don’t know you are looking for a job they’re not going to think of you if they hear of opportunities. Keep your network informed with as much information as possible – when and what type of work you’re looking for.

Not only did Jona gain some terrifi c skills that he can transfer and use in future jobs but in the process he made enough money to pay for a few years of his education. Can’t beat that!

WHY BOTHER JOINING A PROFESSIONAL ASSOCIATION?

14 l 2010 SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING CAREER FAIR

Why Bother Joining a Professional Association? Professional Association memberships can help you kick-start your job search and your career. Although each association has its own unique advantages, most offer some or all of the following basic benefi ts that can help in your job search.

Some basic benefi ts of joining while you’re a student

NETWORKING OPPORTUNITIESKnowing people who are currently in your fi eld is a huge advantage when it comes to starting or advancing your career. Association membership lists can help you identify the “movers and shakers”. A direct contact with someone in your fi eld about possible employment or for an informational interview is much more useful than scrolling job boards and may open the door. Attending the association events, conferences, and seminars is also a great way to meet some of these important people and to build your professional network.

JOB POSTINGSProfessional associations often have job postings in a “classifi ed” section in the journal or newsletter, a section on a web site, or a separate publication available to members only.

INDUSTRY KNOWLEDGEThe journals, newsletters, CDs, video/DVDs and other material that professional associations publish are a great way to keep up-to-date on issues and/or developments in your fi eld. If you are interviewing, this can be invaluable information that will help you stand out! Also as a member, you will be eligible to attend conferences to further build your knowledge of what’s going on in the industry.

Page 15: 2010 Science & Engineering Career Fair Magazine

WHY BOTHER JOINING A PROFESSIONAL ASSOCIATION?

2010 SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING CAREER FAIR l 15

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIESOffering to volunteer on committees or sub-committees can help you gain some industry experience. You may not be eligible to be a committee member but you can certainly offer your time and skills to provide background research for articles in publications or fi nd speakers for conferences. Volunteers are often needed at events and your presence, in a volunteer capacity, is one more way to network and connect with the right people in your industry.

LOOKS GOOD ON YOUR RESUMEBeing a member of one or more professional associations indicates a high level of interest and commitment to your fi eld. In this current competitive market your resume needs to provide the best fi rst impression possible and a Professional Memberships section will help do just that.

REDUCED STUDENT RATESMany professional associations have substantially reduced membership fees for students. To take advantage of these offers be sure to sign up before you graduate.

Invest in your future. Join the professional association in your area of career interest. For a listing of possible associations to join check out the Canadian Information Centre for International Credentials - CICIC

LINKEDIN AND YOUR JOB SEARCH

18 l 2010 SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING CAREER FAIR

and Your Job SearchLinkedIn is an online tool that exists to help you make better use of your professional network. Their belief is that in a global connected economy, your success as a professional and your competitiveness depends upon faster access to insight and resources you can trust.

As a business and professional network LinkedIn should not be mistaken for or used as social networking sites like Facebook or MySpace. This is not the place to post vacation pictures, hook up with the cute guy you met in the bar or talk about your new favorite movie. LinkedIn is designed to help you connect and build a professional network. You can even use LinkedIn as one of the many strategies you implement when conducting your job search.

Here’s a great example of how LinkedIn helped Ken fi nd a job that was perfectly suited to what he wanted to do. Using LinkedIn as part of his active job search Ken set up his profi le and began to build his network. He connected with former co-workers, classmates and business associates. Through this process he also joined online groups and associations. Within two weeks he was approached by a recruiter regarding a job opening. While not directly connected to this recruiter they had two mutual connections. She had searched his profi le, approached him and after completing several rounds of interviews he was the successful candidate chosen for the job. A job he loves by the way.

There are many ways to use LinkedIn when searching for employment opportunities. You can research a company and see if anyone from your

network in connected to someone in that organization. You can look up job postings. You can look up the profi le of an individual and by viewing their contact section you can see if they are interested in job inquiries. For those open to job inquiries this would be a great chance to initiate contact and ask for an Informational Interview.

Start today! Click on Learn LinkedIn to view the Grad guide for students. Then go to LinkedIn and get your profi le started. There’s even an online learning centre that consists of videos, screen shots and how- to sections to help you use LinkedIn most effectively. Take the business cards you collect at the Science and Engineering Career Fair, start connecting and you are on your way to building a strong network for today and for your future.

Another day at the officeThe Barents Sea. It’s hard to imagine a more hostile working environment. But this is our territory. At Melkøya, Norway, 70º North, Statoil has been producing liquefied natural gas since 2007. Here, transfer and processing take place under extreme climatic conditions. The demands upon people and technology are extraordinary. But we make it work. Every day. However, this environment doesn’t encourage complacency. If there’s one lesson we’ve learnt, it’s that Nature commands respect.
