The 2006-07 season will be filled with youth andpotential for the Olivet College wrestling program. TheComets may be a young team, but they expect to contendfor both regional and national honors. With possibly 8-10freshmen and sophomores starting, the varsity lineup willbe younger than most; however, that youth will not be usedto make any competitive excuses.

Senior 197-pounder Jeff Wright, and nationally rankedsophomores Jason Brew at 157 pounds and sophomore KyleVanderhyde at 174 pounds will provide a strong nucleus fora young and talented squad with lofty goals.

Other returning wrest lers to keep an eye on aresophomore Kyle Labrecque at 125 pounds, sophomore DavidSzokola at 133 pounds and sophomore Rob Yahrmarkt at141 pounds. The Comets also welcome junior DaronCruickshank at 184 pounds to the program. A year ago, hewrestled at Muskegon Community College and was therunner-up at the NJCAA National Championships.

Last year, Olivet sent an emphatic statement that a oncenationally prominent program had indeed made a fullcomeback. The Comets climbed as high as 10th in the nationin the NWCA Brute-Adidas Division III dual meet standings, while going 16-1-1 and winning the 2006 NCAA DivisionMidwest Regional by nearly 30 points.

Individually, Wright and Ryan Newberry advanced tothe 2006 NCAA Division III National Championships. Thisall occurred with a roster that typically started five freshmenin the lineup.

Other accomplishments for the Comets includedtournament titles at the Wabash (Ind.) College Monon BellDuals, Mount Union (Ohio) College Eastern Ohio Duals,Milwaukee (Wisc.) School of Engineering Invitational andMid-States Conference Championship.

125 poundsThe battle for the starting position at the lightest weight class is likely to be led by returning starterKyle Labrecque (Battle Creek/Lakeview) and newcomer Blair Mellish (North Branch). Labrecquebattled injuries a year ago to finish at a respectable 14-10 and earned a fourth-place finish at theNCAA Midwest Regional. Mellish comes to Olivet with an outstanding reputation for work ethicand as a state champion whose closest match at the 2006 Michigan High School Athletic Associa-tion (MHSAA) meet was a major decision. Others battling at 125 pounds are junior BisharaAl-Naber (Westland/John Glenn) and freshman Josh Osborne (Mancelona).

133 poundsSophomore David Szokola (Marysville) leads a young, but talented pack at 133 pounds. A year ago, hewent 16-9 in varsity action for the Comets and posted some big wins and tournament place finishesalong the way. Szokola is expected to be challenged by several teammates for the starting role, includingthree freshmen state placers in Brent Hissong (Haslett), Justin Lewis (Middleville) and Ryan Stump(Plymouth/Salem), and former state champion and four-time placer Blake Gardner (Mount Morris).

141 poundsAnother young but talented group is competing for starting honors at 141 pounds as sophomoreRob Yahrmarkt (Sparta) leads the pack. He split time a year ago in the varsity lineup and compiled12 wins. This season, he is expected to be challenged by three freshmen, including state runner-upChris Sandison (Kent City), Derek Bunn (Gaylord) and Nick Leon (Utica Ford).

149 poundsWith Jason Brew moving up to 157 pounds, the competition for the starting nod at 149 pounds isexciting. Sophomores Devin Young (Williamston), Matt McNeil (Royal Oak/Kimball) and Nick Wolf(Olivet) are battling with senior Joel Rozeboom (Mason) and two-time state placer Kyle Judy(Homer) for the spot.

157 poundsJason Brew (Sparta) makes the move up one weight class after sporting a 32-7 record in his firstseason as a Comet. He climbed as high as fourth in the national rankings. Also wrestling at 157pounds is senior Ken Andrews (Swartz Creek), a three-time letterwinner and former club nationalchampion. There is the chance that one of these two standouts will move to 165 pounds late in theseason.
