He has led theComets in scoring each of his firsttwo years in the red and white, scoring 20 career goals and tallying11 assists for 51 points. Look forsophomore Ross Cutler (AnnArbor/Pioneer) to make thetransition to play up top as well.

“Obviously Mike is going to bedepended on to score goals,” saidWiseman. “Teams are well awareof whom he is, so having anotherweapon up top with him with will bekey. We have several high energyplayers coming into the team thatwill compete for time up top.”

MIDFIELDERSOf last years starting midfield, only senior Andrew Evans

(Eastport/Petoskey) and junior Clay Robinson (Marshall) return tothe Olivet Comets, opening the door for newcomers to step in right

away and contribute in the middle. Freshmen Matt Garza (Pinckney/Saline) and Kyle Ellingham (Richmond/Armada) should compete forminutes.

“We have a young midfield,” says Wiseman. “We will have to sorta lot out during preseason, but we definitely have some viable options.”

DEFENSEThe defense is anchored by junior goalkeeper Ethan Felsing

(Mason), who has played nearly every minute in goal for the Cometsthe last two seasons and was a 2008 second-team All-MIAA selection. He has collected 206 saves, while posting a 1.73 goals against average.

“Ethan has proved that he is avery solid goalkeeper at this level,”said Wiseman. I expect him to stepup into a leadership role this seasonas well as mentor some of ourfreshman goalkeepers coming intothe team.”

The defensive line has themost experience returning. JuniorMatt Jenca (Lansing/Holt) andsophomores Chase Anthes(Ludington) and Anthony Sovis(Williamston) are all going seeplaying time on defense. JuniorMatt Manning (Charlotte) will belooked upon to lead the backline.Freshmen Jake Jensen(Vicksburg) and Cole Dehen(Kentwood/East Kentwood) bringgreat size and athletic ability to theteam, so look for them to compete

for playing time right away.“This season we are going to have to depend on our back line to

lead our team,” says Wiseman. “We have the players with good speedand good feet, which should make us a tough defensive team.

mICHIGAN INTErCOLLEGIATE ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION

The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA)is America’s oldest collegiate athletic conference.

The 2009-10 school year marks the 123rd consecutiveyear of operation for the NCAA Division III affil iatedconference. The MIAA was founded March 24, 1888. Fromthe very beginning, the MIAA has conducted full-seasonchampionships in multiple sports. There have been changesin some of the sports (bicycle racing and Indian club jugglinghave long since disappeared, and basketball did not evenexist in 1888), but these changes have served to developthe MIAA into one of America’s finest NCAA Division IIIconferences, today offering 18 sports for men and women.

The MIAA’s continuity is noteworthy. Of the 12 schoolsthat have had full membership, eight are still members —Adrian, Albion, Alma, Calvin, Hope, Kalamazoo, Olivet, andSaint Mary’s. Significantly, not one of these eight collegeshas ever belonged to any other formal league. Albion andOlivet were charter members although Albion is the onlymember to hold continuous membership. Ex-members areMichigan State University (1888-1907), Eastern MichiganUniversity (1892-1926), Hillsdale College (1888-1960), andDefiance College (1997-2000).

The MIAA’s membership list went unchanged from 1960until 1997 when the Defiance College of Ohio and SaintMary’s College of Indiana were invited to join. It also markedthe first time that the league added members outside thestate of Michigan. The league stipulated, however, that thename of the conference would not change. The inauguralyear of current members are: Adrian (1908), Albion (1888),Alma (1902), Calvin (1953), Hope (1926), Kalamazoo(1896), Olivet (1888), and Saint Mary’s (1997).

The MIAA marked a historic note in 2002 when theleague accepted Wisconsin Lutheran College of Milwaukeeas an associate member for the purpose of competing infootball. Wisconsin Lutheran left the MIAA after the 2007season to join the Northern Athletics Conference.

Trine University of Angola, Ind., became a conferencemember in 2004-05 upon its acceptance as a provisionalNCAA member.
