The anticipation for the 2007-08 wrestling season is building inOlivet, Mich. Boasting another deep roster of nearly 50 grapplersand a record 15 state titles now in the wrestling room, this is a teamwith both talent and depth.

“It’s nice to be to a point where we are not relying on freshmenand sophomores as our greatest asset,” said third-year Head CoachTodd Hibbs. “We still have a lot to prove on the national scene, butwe are excited about the challenge.”

Please read pages 10-11 in this guide for a complete previewof the 2007-08 season, which is broken down by weight class.

In 2007 Olivet College placed eighth in their first-ever trip tothe NWCA National Duals, upsetting a pair of top 10 teams along theway, including the tournament’s No. 4 seed. The Comets finishedthe season by qualifying three wrestlers to the national tournamentand seeing Kyle Vanderhyde place second at 174 pounds. Sendingthree wrestlers to the national championships marked the thirdstraight season that a team led by Hibbs has increased its number ofqualifiers, and it was also the most for Olivet since 2001.

Todd Hibbs begins his fourth season as the headwrestling coach at Olivet College. Hibbs acceptedthe position as head coach in 2004, though it hadalready been announced that 2004-05 would be thefinal year for the program. That decision was reversedby the Olivet College Board of Trustees in January of2005, and the Comets have responded.

Hibbs has posted a record of 39-10-2 as headcoach, while consistently recruiting state-placers,

state champions and even multi-time state champions to the program. In 2006,the Comets posted a 16-1-1 record, going undefeated in Division III dual meetsand won the NCAA Midwest Regional, as Hibbs was named Midwest RegionalCoach of the Year and was a finalist for national Coach of the Year. In 2007,Olivet placed eighth at the NWCA National Duals and sent three wrestlers to theNCAA tournament, the most since the Jare Klein era of Olivet College wrestling.Kyle Vanderhyde became Hibbs’ first All-American, as he placed second at theNCAA Division III National Championships. The Comets have done equallywell in the classroom during Hibbs’ tenure, ranking fourth in the nation the pasttwo years in Division III with GPA’s each year higher than 3.30.

“As a coaching staff we are pleased with the commitment our student-athletes are making and we feel like we are headed in the right direction,” saidHibbs. “Still, we have set some very lofty goals, and we will need the continuedcommitment from everyone – our wrestlers, coaches, alumni and administrationin order to reach them.”

HEAD COACH TODD HIBBSThe wrestling program will see that continued support from alumni and

administration in 2008 when the Comets move into a new wrestling room in TheCutler Events Center. Construction on the new facility began in October 2007.The Cutler Events Center will include a new wrestling room, locker room, coaching offices, a weight room and an indoor training track.

“As we continue toward our goal of winning national titles both athleticallyand academically, it is clear that The Cutler Events Center will be a huge assetto our student-athletes. All of us in the Olivet College wrestling family are deeplygrateful to the generous alumni and hard-working staff members who are makingthis project a reality,” said Hibbs.

Hibbs also serves as an assistant professor in the Health, PhysicalEducation, Recreation and Sport Department. He has wrestling coachingexperience from several Ohio high school programs and previously served asan assistant coach at Michigan State University. WRESTLINGPREVIEW BY WEIGHT CLASS

125 POUNDSThe starting position at the lightest weight class should be a tight battle between several talented competitors, including junior two-time letterwinner Kyle Labrecque (Battle Creek/Lakeview). A season ago, he and formerstate champion Blair Mellish (Silverwood/North Branch) combined for a record of 36-16, as Labrecque placedthird at the NCAA Division III Midwest Regional. Another strong contender in the mix at 125 pounds will befreshman state champion Ibrahim Abdulla (Dearborn/Fordson).

133 POUNDSSophomore Blake Gardner (Mount Morris) is the returning starter at 133 pounds. A year ago, he won 22 matchesas a freshman for the Comets. The challenge to hold the starting position will be strong, however, with junior DavidSzokola (Marysville), who is returning from injury, along with sophomore Justin Lewis (Middleville/ThornappleKellogg) and hard-working freshman state-placer Adam Wilson (Battle Creek/Harper Creek) sure to be a factor.

141 POUNDSJunior Rob Yahrmarkt (Sparta) brings two varsity letters and a 21-win sophomore season to challenge for thestarting role again. His competition for the job will come from several strong freshmen, led by four-time Division 1state-placer Jesse Bain (Hartland) and possibly from state champion Ben Hitchcock (New Lothrop/Montrose),who is undecided between 141 and 149 pounds. Freshmen Jon Pelham (Pittsford) and Colby Votava (Albion)will also provide depth at 141.

149 POUNDSAfter posting several big wins during the season, junior Nick Wolf (Charlotte/Olivet) was voted as the squad’smost improved wrestler in 2006-07. He is back to battle for the starting job, but will be fiercely challenged byseveral athletes, perhaps most notably freshman and three-time state champion Vince Lahar (Clio) and Hitchcock.Others seeking time in the lineup at 149 will be sophomores Matt McNeil (Royal Oak/Kimball) and Nick Leon(Sterling Heights/Henry Ford II) and freshman state-placer Nate Beilby (Climax/Climax-Scotts).

157 POUNDSJason Brew (Sparta) has been one of the top competitors in Division III for the past two seasons at 149 and 157pounds. In 2006-07, he experienced a frustrating season that often saw him wrestle at 165 pounds for teampurposes and ultimately ended prematurely with a devastating ACL injury. Fully recovered, Brew has droppedback to 157 pounds and is poised for a breakout year. Joining him at 157 will be freshmen state-placer ScottKulman (Capac) and James Zerebiny (Westland/John Glenn).

WRESTLINGPREVIEW BY WEIGHT CLASS

165 POUNDSAs the lone projected senior starter for the Comets, Daron Cruickshank (Westland/John Glenn) will return to theweight class where he was a junior college national runner-up two seasons ago at Muskegon Community College. In 2006-07, he competed for the Comets at 184 pounds, winning 25 matches en route to winning the regional titleand competing at the NCAA Division III National Championships. Still, for both personal and team goals, Cruickshankwill drop two weight classes this season. He will be joined at 165 by juniors Joey Desrochers (VermontvilleMapleValley) and Greg Jarratt (Centreville) and freshmen state-placers Jim Neal (Marysville) and Justin Jaynes(Richmond).

174 POUNDSKyle Vanderhyde’s (Sparta) only loss against a NCAA Division III wrestler a season ago came in the championshipmatch at the national championships, as he recovered from mid-season surgery to place second in the nation.Vanderhyde will attempt to lead his teammates to national prominence this season while at the same time continuingtoward his personal goal of being a national champion. The depth at 174 pounds will be very strong as seniorDayne Fletke (Middleville/Thornapple Kellogg) will be joined by state champions Darrick Parker (Bangor) andJoe McAllister (Sault St. Marie).

184 POUNDSThe Comets have qualified a wrestler to the national tournament from the 184-pound weight class in each of HeadCoach Todd Hibbs’ seasons with the program. This year it will be a new starter that tries to keep that string alive.Leading the pack is likely to be sophomore Joe Bargerstock (Livonia/Churchill) and junior Aaron Stewart(Dansville). State-placer Bargerstock has thus far seen limited action in his career, but is a strong and quickcompetitor with a serious upside, while Stewart is a former two-time letterwinner who returns from a tour in Iraq withthe United States Marine Corps. Also at 184 are juniors Tom Ahlfeld (Beaverton) and Joe Troncone (Macomb/Centreline), and freshmen state-placers Mason Ley (Caro) and Rob Disbrow (Lansing/Everett) along withAaron Sullenger (Alpena).

197 POUNDSThe 197-pound weight class should be one of the deepest in talent for the Comets. A combination of veteranleadership and young talent will make the competition for mat time fierce. Sophomore Joey Yurisich (Battle Creek/Harper Creek) won 23 matches last year as a freshman, while senior Tucker Surbrook (Potterville) is also aviable starter. Still, highly talented freshman state champion Jason Weatherspoon (Jackson/Napoleon) will jointhe team after football season. Freshman Ryan Connors (Ann Arbor/Pioneer) is also expected to compete for mattime.

285 POUNDSSean Misko (Richmond) was voted the Outstanding Freshman of the Year at the 2007 Mid-States ConferenceTournament, and will return to improve on his 21-win total. Also looking for mat time at heavyweight will be seniorAdam Barr (Holt), juniors James Boyd (St. Charles, Ill./Stoney Creek) and James Tanis (Jenison), sophomoreAndrew Middleton (Romeo) and freshman Jaime Llerena (Bangor).

Olivet College is constructing a new multipurpose events center thanksto the generosity of Dave Cutler, a 1965 Olivet alumnus. Cutler has contributedtwo donations totaling $4.3 million toward the $5.1 million facility. In recognitionof his outstanding support of the college, Olivet will name the facility TheCutler Events Center.

According to Cutler, his support of the center has been given in recognitionof Olivet’s 1961 football team. That year, he was the starting quarterback andled the Comets to one of their best overall records in school history at 8-1.

“Olivet College is very fortunate to have an alumnus such as DaveCutler, who has taken on a tremendous responsibility by funding the majorityof the events center,” said Olivet President Don Tuski.

“This is truly a monumental gift that helps Olivet maintain a competitiveedge with other colleges and universities. The entire Olivet College communityis grateful for Dave Cutler’s outstanding support through the years.”
