1 Sunday, September 4, 2016 - 23rd Sunday in Ordinary Time ST. TERESA OF CALCUTTA, FOUNDER, MISSIONARIES OF CHARITY (1910-1997): Mother Teresa died on September 5, 1997. She was beatified in 2003 by Pope Jon Paul II and canonized by Pope Francis on this Sunday, September 4, 2016. In her later years Mother Teresa was widely recognized as a living emblem of God’s love. She received countless honors, including the Nobel Peace Prize. Yet for years she toiled in obscurity. In fact, the Albanian-born nun had spent twenty years as a Loreto Sister in her order’s schools in India before receiving the “call within a call” that defined her distinctive vocation . One day in 1946, while traveling by train to Darjeeling in the Himalayas, she suddenly sensed that God “wanted me to be poor with the poor, and love him in the distressing disguise of the poorest of the poor.” With her congregation’s permission she left the convent, donned a simple white sari, and went out to seek Jesus in the desperate byways of Calcutta. Eventually others joined her, and they became the Missionaries of Charity. And she became Mother Teresa. Though in time she established centers of service around the globe, she remained particularly identified with her original home for the dying in Calcutta. There, destitute and dying men and women, gathered off the streets, received loving care until they died. Those who had lived like “animals in the gutter” were enabled to “die like angels” -- knowing they were valued and loved as children of God. “Not all of us can do great things. But we can do small things with great love.” ~ St. Teresa of Calcutta LABOR DAY A DAY OF SABBATH - THIS MONDAY: Labor Day weekend, on the first weekend of September each year, is a kind of holy Sabbath given to us to relax, play, pray, and reflect on the source of all our energies and labors. Labor Day is a national holiday set aside for all who labor and have commitments to their work, their families, to their Church, to their community, and to themselves. At all Masses on this Labor Day weekend, we lift up the labor we expend in our commitment to our work. The 8:30 am Mass on this Labor Day Monday will prayerfully acknowledge the expenditures of our energies through the labor of our hearts, minds and hands in the ministry and work of everyday life. Parishioners are encouraged to participate in the 8:30am special Labor Day Mass this Monday and unite your labors with the sacrifice of Jesus, through the priceless gift of His offering on the Altar of the Cross through the Mass. Refreshments will be served in the Placita after the 6:30am and 8:30am Masses on Labor Day. OUR MOTHER OF SORROWS NOVENA DEVOTION: Our Lady of Sorrows (Our Mother of Sorrows) is commemorated twice a year on the liturgical calendar, September 15th and the Friday before Palm Sunday. Commemorating the sorrows of the Blessed Virgin Mary twice a year on the liturgical calendar demonstrates how important this devotion is. Devotion to Our Mother of Sorrows dates back to the beginning of the Church. The first example we have is St. John at the foot of the cross. This devotion was enshrined in Church history by the Gospel story of St. John - “Now there stood by the cross of Jesus, His mother…” Though the devotion has always been part of Catholic piety, it was not until the 13th century that the devotion of meditating on the sorrows of Our Lady began to flourish much more. On Good Friday in 1239, while meditating on our Lord’s Passion and Our Lady’s sufferings, Our Lady appeared to the seven founders of the religious order of the servants of Mary, the Servites, and revealed to them her wish for them to form an order dedicated to, practicing and promoting the devotion to her sorrows. Through the upcoming seven-day novena, we will be praying for the following gifts so apparent in the heart of Our Mother of Sorrows… the gifts of a listening heart, contemplation, loving compassion, faithfulness, peace and humility. The following is the prayer that will be prayed each evening as a part of the novena and also prayed during the daily Masses from September 9th to September 15th. Prayer for St. Teresa of Calcutta: Bread of Life, your servant, Mother Teresa, tirelessly served the poorest of the poor in your name. She showed the world how to serve with humility, sharing your life with those who were dying, abandoned and alone. Grant that her example will help us to treat others with respect and dignity. May we see you, dear Jesus, in everyone. And may all of the saints continue to pray for us and inspire us in our call to be holy in our everyday lives. Amen. Prayer for Human Labor: O God, who through human labor never cease to perfect and govern the vast work of creation, listen to the supplications of your people and grant that all men and women may find work that befits their dignity, joins them more closely to one another and enables them to serve their neighbor. Through our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen. Prayer: Lord Jesus, as members of this community of faith under the patronage of Our Mother of Sorrows, we thank You for the gift of Your last will and testament on the cross. We thank You for bestowing Your mother to us, and bestowing us to Your mother. Bless us with the gift of fidelity as we contemplate her journey with You from the womb to the tomb. Enrich us in our prayerful contemplation of the Seven Stations of her great sorrows. Open our hearts to the gifts of her heart - the gifts of a listening heart, contemplation, loving compassion, faithfulness, peace and humility. Our Mother of Sorrows pray for us. Amen.

Scripture Reflection September 4, 2016 - 23rd Sunday in Ordinary Time
Luke 14:25-33
In today’s Gospel, Jesus clearly and boldly sets forth the
cost of discipleship. Jesus tells the gathered crowd that they need
to be willing to carry a heavy cross if they’re going to continue to
follow him. He’s laying out the consequences for those who
need to know the cost of something before they begin. The
planners, the strategists, the cautious ones are the ones who nod
knowingly at the stories of the builder left with an unfinished
tower or the commander facing impossible odds on the
battlefield.
Jesus reminds his followers that if they can’t bear the idea
of the cross, they’ll never be able to bear the real thing … and
bear it they must. He’s asking nothing less than everything. At
some point, following Jesus is a glorious leap of faith. Faith, like
so much of a life, is a constant swinging back and forth between
caution and risk, between moving forward and then taking time
to stop and consider where we are. There are times when we
need to launch ourselves into the future God seems to be holding
before us. At other times, we need to gather our resources for the
long haul.
The goal of following Jesus is not a profitable corporation, a
successful military campaign or a well-constructed building. The
goal is the resurrection won by His victory over death. Jesus’
first and best followers through the ages often jumped first and
asked questions later. They knew that trusting the Spirit was far
more important than worrying about the weight of the cross.
Jesus calls us to respond to His call with loyalty, honor, and
a willing heart. Everything else can come later. Even as we take,
and retake our first steps in faith, it helps to accept that the
journey will be long and sometimes difficult. ***How often do
you reflect on the direction your life has taken because of your
faith in God?

Did You Know… Labor Day, the first Monday in September, is
a creation of the labor movement and is dedicated to the social
and economic achievements of American workers. It constitutes
a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made
to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country.
Through the years the nation gave increasing emphasis to
Labor Day. The first governmental recognition came through
municipal ordinances passed during 1885 and 1886. From these,
a movement developed to secure state legislation. The first state
bill was introduced into the New York legislature, but the first to
become law was passed by Oregon on February 21, 1887. By
June 28, 1894, Congress passed an act making the first Monday
in September of each year a legal holiday.
THE SEVEN SORROWS OF MARY STATIONS… SEPTEMBER 9TH TO SEPTEMBER 15TH: At 7:15pm each evening from
September 9th and concluding on the Feast Day of Our Mother of Sorrows on September 15th, a devotional prayer ritual around each of Mary’s
stations of sorrow will be celebrated in the Church. Each evening will focus on a particular sorrow of Mary. It will be followed by silent
prayer in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament exposed on the main altar and conclude with Benediction each evening. A station prayer
particular to each day will be included in the each of the daily and weekend Masses during the seven days.
Parishioners’ Petitions: Parishioners who wish to have particular personal intentions included in the prayers during the seven stations
devotions are asked to note their petitions on the special form in front of the image of Our Mother of Sorrows in the Church during these weeks.
WOMEN OF OUR MOTHER OF SORROWS PARISH REACHING OUT TO HOMELESS WOMEN IN THEIR SORROW: More
than 20 of our women parishioners have been actively involved in establishing the Sr. Jose Women’s Center. It had operated initially at a
church location off 22nd Street close to the freeway. The founding group has established their own 501(c)3 moving them towards the
realization of their vision of providing services in a permanent site to homeless and abused women throughout the year.
A fundraising dinner and silent auction event is being sponsored by the founding group on Saturday evening, October 15th after the
5:30pm Mass at St. Augustine’s Catholic High School. Tickets will be available for purchase in the church Placita after the weekend Masses on
September 24-25. I invite and encourage our parishioners to be supportive of this special fundraiser through the purchase of a ticket or a table.
It is a wonderful way to reach out to the least. For tickets or information, parishioners may contact Jean Fedigan at (520) 954-3373.
NOVEMBER 5TH “LEADING LIKE JESUS” SEMINAR… SPIRITUAL ENRICHMENT DAY: The parish continues to make a very
intentional investment into the Jesus model and example of servant leadership. A day-long seminar (8:30am-3:30pm) entitled "Leading Like
Jesus" will be presented in the parish on Saturday, November 5th. The November 5th gathering will include parishioners in leadership from
parish groups. Parishioners who may have a desire to be considered for participation in this seminar day… Leading Like Jesus… are
encouraged to do so by contacting Steve Contreras at [email protected] or call 747-1321.
Outside of Mass, where He silently and humbly dwells in the tabernacle of every Catholic church. There we can praise Him, thank Him, converse with Him, tell Him our troubles, and receive His light and grace into our minds and hearts.

time you will spend on earth." -- Mother Teresa

Season of Creation: September 1st to October 4th Feast of St. Francis of Assisi
“Faced with the widespread destruction of the
environment, people everywhere are coming to understand that
we cannot continue to use the goods of the earth as we have in
the past.” ~ St. John Paul II, January 1, 1990
The Season of Creation website (www.SeasonofCreation.org)
has 17 tips to help us reduce our carbon footprint, ways in
which we can act to help restore the health of our earth and
be good stewards of God’s creation. These are things we
can do in our own HOMES, with our FOOD CHOICES, in
our WATER & ENERGY use, and in our TRAVEL. A
few suggestions from the travel category include: when
possible, use carpooling, public transportation, bike riding,
walking rather than driving. Check into low-carbon
vehicles to see if this might be better for you. Our driving
style can also help or hurt (speeding or unnecessary
acceleration can reduce our car’s mileage & increase
carbon emissions).
The next Bereavement groups at OMOS begin on
September 20. The times will remain the same for all
groups: 2-3:30PM, 4-5:30PM, drop in groups 6-7PM.
There is no charge for the eight week course. To
register, call Grace Rome-Schnakenberg, BSN, MA at
