PARISH NEWSLETTER 4TH SEPTEMBER 2016 23rd SUNDAY OF THE YEAR Gospel Reflection 23rd Sunday in Ordinary Time "Anyone of you who does not renounce all his possessions cannot be my disciple." It's a modern misconception to think of Jesus as the ultimate nice guy who only said things that everybody loved to hear. Of course Jesus is the perfect model of charity and compassion, but he also gave some very challenging teachings. Today's Gospel is a case in point. Not many people are thrilled by Christ's lesson today that insists God MUST be first in our lives. Few are those who love to hear this instruction to renounce our beloved things as well as our beloved relationships. But Jesus does not mince words. We are to "hate" our "father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters," and even our own life. It's important to understand that the use of the word "hate" here does not mean to despise anyone or treat them unkindly. It means rather to prefer something--or Someone--else, namely, God, to these important relationships. Taken in the context of the Gospel as a whole it is clear that Jesus is not advocating cruelty or animosity. On the contrary, just a few weeks ago we heard from Luke 10:27 as Jesus instructed us to love our neighbours as our- selves. It means, instead, putting all our trust in God, whatever the cost may be. BLESSING OF SCHOOL BAGS As the children of the Parish begin their new school year, there will be a special Blessing of School Bags on Sunday, 4 th Sept in Holy Rosary at the 12:15 Mass. Families are invited to attend, and the children can bring their empty school bags to be blessed

PARISH NEWSLETTER 4TH SEPTEMBER 2016
23rd SUNDAY OF THE YEAR
Gospel Reflection
23rd Sunday in Ordinary Time
"Anyone of you who does not renounce all his
possessions cannot be my disciple." It's a
modern misconception to think of Jesus as the
ultimate nice guy who only said things that
everybody loved to hear. Of course Jesus is the
perfect model of charity and compassion, but
he also gave some very challenging teachings.
Today's Gospel is a case in point. Not many
people are thrilled by Christ's lesson today that
insists God MUST be first in our lives. Few are
those who love to hear this instruction to
renounce our beloved things as well as our
beloved relationships. But Jesus does not
mince words. We are to "hate" our "father and
mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters,"
and even our own life.
It's important to understand that the use of the
word "hate" here does not mean to despise
anyone or treat them unkindly. It means rather
to prefer something--or Someone--else, namely,
God, to these important relationships. Taken in
the context of the Gospel as a whole it is clear
that Jesus is not advocating cruelty or
animosity. On the contrary, just a few weeks
ago we heard from Luke 10:27 as Jesus
instructed us to love our neighbours as our-
selves. It means, instead, putting all our trust in
God, whatever the cost may be.
BLESSING OF SCHOOL BAGS
As the children of the Parish begin their new
school year, there will be a special Blessing of
School Bags on Sunday, 4th Sept in Holy
Rosary at the 12:15 Mass. Families are invited
to attend, and the children can bring their empty
school bags to be blessed

NEW PARISH NEWSLETTER: Welcome to the new format for the parish newsletter. It may take a couple of weeks to get use to the new layout but we hope you like it. I like to take this opportunity to thank our parish Communications Group for all the work they have done and will continue to do in preparing the newsletter each week. They do a super job. Our new newsletter is printed free of charge by Liturgical Publish-ing Ireland Please note, due to printing arrangements, the date for submitting notices or Mass intentions for publication must now be submitted a week in advance. For the weekend of 10/11th Sept., notices for publica-tion must be submitted by Fri 2nd Sept.to the office. Thank you.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY: Next Thursday is the birthday of our mother, Mary. We celebrate and rejoice on Our Lady’s birth-day. The entire Church cele-brates the birth of our lovely Mother, Mary. She is the one chosen by God to give birth to the Son of God, to nurture and guide him into manhood. There is a lot more to Mary than her physical and maternal relation-ship with Jesus. God the Father bestowed all power on
Jesus. He, in turn, bestowed on Mary the maternal responsibility for all God’s children, including the Church. It could be said that Mary has been down played in recent years after decades of casting her in the role of pious unreality. Mary is a real person. Mothers do not come much more real than Jewish mothers. Those of us who have lived with mothers for longer than we lived on our own know for sure that Mary is a typical mother. Mary even bounced Jesus into his first miracle! This is why Mary is resorted to by those described by Jesus as weak and unlearned. They instinctively know the power of motherhood. Mary, before the world was made you existed in the mind of God – you were appointed mother of Christ and our mother. Happy birthday, dear mother, happy birthday.
NEW CHOIR MEMBERS: Our choirs will be starting up again after the summer break. They are always looking for new members. Please do not be shy in volunteer-ing. Each of us need to share our gifts to help to continue to build up
our parish community and enhance our liturgical cele-brations. We have many styles to choose from, Gospel to Classic. Don’t depend on others to do it……...come on lend me your voice!!!! They say that those who sing, pray twice!!
FOLK GROUP: Practice resumes on Tuesday 6th Sept. at 8.30pm in Kilian House Family Centre. New members welcome. FIRST COMMUNION & CONFIRMATION
