Salutations

7 JuneHow are your plans to attend the July 22-23 Dalton Summit/Reunion in Silver Spring, Maryland, coming along? If you need the information web site URL again, it's: http://www.wam.umd.edu/~jklumpp/Summit/Welcome.htm

Here is some of what you will find there (in addition to some great people):1. A photo display of selected lands and houses where Daltons lived: Albemarle Co.

VA, Pittsylvania Co. VA, Caswell Co. NC, Pulaski Co. KY, and any photos you bring.

2. A major database of Daltons (on a computer) will be there for you to search. It has been compiled from all four and one-half years of this newsletter.

3. A migration map for 19th century Daltons (when we lost track of so many of them). You will be able to add your family to the map.

And more... contact [email protected]

14 JuneAt the bottom of one newsletter each month, I list other Dalton resources on the Web. What I have not listed in the past were all of YOUR family web sites. I would like to do that from hereon out. It will be a great help to everyone looking for Daltons and will make your homepage efforts even more invaluable.

Sometime during this month, please send me your Home Page URL if you include Daltons in any way on your web site. Send your URL even if you have sent it before. We need current, correct addresses. Thanks.

21 JuneThe Wednesday newsletter is coming to you early: on Sunday, as you can see. I am out of town again next week and did not want to eliminate another issue of the newsletter--there are so many good things to share.

In the wings are many people who can send the newsletter out in my absence; but our numbers have grown. Consequently I am short a few people to send the newsletter out to small groups of 25-35 people with internet addresses (the AOL groups are in pretty

good shape). If you would like to help, I'll happily accept your good offer. Just let me know by email.

We have a good start on the Dalton Web Pages...any more? Please send your URL so that it can be listed with the others.

28 JuneOur Featured County changes again: next month it will be Philadelphia Co. Pennsylvania (searching for info on James D'Alton there in 1830 and others in the area) requested by John D'Alton, [email protected]

All the latest Dalton Reunion/Symposium information can be found in Item #25 "Queries, Notes, Responses."

And some Bennett Queries:

As for the Richard Bennett who married Asenath Dalton, I am still trying to figure out which Richard he is. I had been working under the assumption that it was Richard, son of Peter and Frances. The journal presents a problem since Mary Ann was born in 1815 and this Richard died in 1811. Could Richard and Asenath been separated or divorced? It would explain a lot if Richard and Asenath divorced and Asenath remarried.

Page 5: Contents 00.pdf · Contents 7 June 1. New Members ... Mason Co. KY Data ... It would explain a lot if Richard and Asenath divorced and Asenath remarried.

There were two Richard Bennetts who died in 1811 leaving wills. One was in Caswell County, NC and is not related. At the end of this message I have included on abstract of the will of the Richard Bennett who died in Pittsylvania. This will was probated 21 Oct. 1811, 5 days after the death of the Richard, son of Peter and Frances. Note especially that he left his estate to Charles Bobbett with a life estate to Louvisa Cockram. Charles Bobbett was surety to the marriage of Richard Bennett and Nancy Dalton.

Daughter of Thomas V Marshall died 1920 at age 60 Tn, Ark, to MO

Son of George Marshall of North Carolina and Myra DALTON of England per Thomas's death Certificate....Thought to be George's second wife who only had the one son in North Carolina... Half sister? married Martin

Related Comments:According to 1850 Census in North Carolina it listed a George W. Marshall (page 62) for Cherokee County, Murphy Township. I believe this is my family; however George's wife's name is Sarah M. Is she a first wife or is that a nickname Myra used? Children listed in this family were: Minerva 7, Selina 5, Amanda 3 (who later married John Leander Martin around 1866). This family then settled in Walland and Maryville, TN after 1900 - Blount Co Tn...Seems that the Vance name is continued in this family and may be a mother's maiden name or a name continued from a male in the family.

The Dalton Genealogical SocietyMillicent V. Craig, American Secretary

"Henry Dalton, English Ranchero in California" is featured in the June, "Daltons in History" web page. Born in the Limehouse district of London, Henry ventured to Peru, Mexico and California as a trader and became a land baron or haciendado owning virtually all of the San Gabriel Valley. In the war between Mexico and the states, Dalton sided with Mexico only to lose his land and water rights to squatters. Rancho Azusa was a model of farming ingenuity and the area became known as Dalton Hill.

The identity of "Mademoiselle X" was not revealed until thirty years after her death. She was Mademoiselle Aimee Irene d'Alton, the secret love of the noted poet de Musset. In this issue of the web page there is a short cameo of Aimee and a likeness of this strikingly beautiful young woman. Your editor translated the love letters from de Musset to Aimee and a full length article appears in the June issue of the DGS Journal, June 2000.

Please read the DGS News for latest happenings of the Society. An announcement of The Dalton Symposium to be conducted by James Klumpp and Melanie Crain is also

listed in this issue. Diane Jackman has sent "Part III of Newfoundland Marriages" and the a section of "Chicago Daltons of Irish Birth, Obituaries" is quite valuable in that in nearly every instance the parish or townland and county in Ireland is given for the deceased.

In "Daltons to the Forefront", there is a large number of queries and several connections that have been made through DGS efforts. We encourage you to post your query on the Guest Page

Lastly, there is another Monograph (V) which deals with the "Never Ending Search" for the origins of "Princess Jane" wife of Knight Walter De Aliton, founder of the main Irish Dalton line. There is a scenario that could link her to the Capets, the family of French Kings, but proving this scenario is quite remote. However, there is also information on where the remains of the Plantagenet Kings are located and their DNA could be useful for those who believe that they are descended from royalty.

The DGS appreciates your support and looks forward to your queries and comments on the Guest Page. If you have additional information or comments on any of the above articles please do not hesitate to send a note to: [email protected]

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 10. Elizabeth Dalton Found! Ardris Londene, JACKARDL@cs.com---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Isham Dalton's Widow Found

Those of you who are descendants of Isham Dalton of Madison County, Kentucky, have probably been stymied by the disappearance of his wife, Elizabeth Thompson Walton. The Edna Brinkman book on the Epperson family, had a quote by Lucetta Weishair, granddaughter of Isham and Elizabeth Dalton, that Elizabeth married a man named Fox.

My research in Madison County, Kentucky, produced a power of attorney, given to Pedro Epperson, by William Dalton and Elizabeth Bailes, for the sale of their portion of the land they resided on in Kentucky. This land was owned jointly by the Isham Dalton heirs. This sale was to Francis Hart Dalton in 1833. After reading this, I decided that Elizabeth Baile could be Isham Dalton's widow. However, I had no proof, just a hunch.

I discuss Dalton issues with Sally Wood ([email protected]) and told her of this idea. Sally, through some diligent research, found the marriage of Alexander Bales and Betsy Dorton, (Dolton) in Lawrence County, Indiana, on December 12, 1828. Widow Dalton disappeared from the Madison County, Kentucky, tax list in 1827. I believe this to be our Elizabeth Dalton, found at last!

Now we need to find where she is buried.

* NOTE: MONTGOMERY CO. MO. HISTORYJoe Green, [email protected], rightly pointed out that in addition to the Boone family mentioned in the Montgomery Co. History there is information about the Younger family--of far more interest to the Daltons. The offer still stands: contact your editor if you want a copy. It's too long to put in the newsletter but can be sent in three emails to anyone who wishes it.

* QUERY: DALTONS IN GA, AL, AND FLfrom Vivian Alcott, [email protected]

I have been working on my Dalton line and had that brick wall crash down on my head! I am slowly digging myself out of the brick pile but am pretty much at a stand still. This is my Dalton line as I know it:

Samuel Dalton b. abt 1857 Atlanta, GA (?) married Jane Louvina ?Children of Samuel and Jane (only one child that we know of at this point)

Pleatus Dalton b. 17 Oct 1877 Ga. d. 21 Mar 1961 in Jacksonville Fla. married Nancy Jane Dutton b. 5 Sept 1887 Ga. d. 29 Dec. 1962 in Jacksonville Fla. Children of Pleatus and Nancy

Dolly b. 1910 Gwinnett, GA. Grace, Theodore, George, Daisy, Ben and Troy

Dolly went on to marry Robert Alexander Dannelly in 1930, Coleman Ga. abt. 1938 Dolly and Robert moved to Jacksonville with their two small boys, James Warren, and

Robert Madison

So far I do know that Nancy Jane did have at least two sisters Emma Bailey and Lena

Page 21: Contents 00.pdf · Contents 7 June 1. New Members ... Mason Co. KY Data ... It would explain a lot if Richard and Asenath divorced and Asenath remarried.

Reeves both lived in Lawrenceville, GA in 1962. In the obit for Pleatus, it does not list any siblings. This family line does come from GA originally but did live in Ala. and Fla. Does anyone have anything on this family line?

* NOTE: GARLAND DALTON REUNIONfrom Kathy Dalton McNeal, [email protected]

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 19. Josephine's Theories Josephine Lester, lester@avonil.net---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ancestral Theory #1: David and Judith Dalton Jr. family..............The strongest family ancestral connection for Isham and Samuel Dalton, at present, appears to be with David and Judith Dalton Jr. as on page 10 of The Dalton Gang Story. Thomas, James, Benjamin, (our) Isham (wife Mary Goad), Lewis, Judith and Sally. Nancy Samuelson, author of The Dalton Gang Story, also believes that there may have been other children.

Samuel Dalton, born 1792, Isham Dalton, Henry Dalton children married cousins. I found documentation of David Dalton, son of Isham, and Mary Goad Dalton marriage record signed by Isham Dalton, saying "David, my son."

I know my g-g-grandmother Chloe Elizabeth Dalton was a daughter of Samuel and Seluda Mustain Dalton. I know that my g-g-grandmother Chloe Dalton married an Isham Dalton, son of Henry Dalton. Henry, I believe, to be a brother of Samuel Dalton and Isham Dalton. Henry was married to Elizabeth Watkins. Chloe Dalton's second marriage was to Clement Harmon Roe in Peoria Co., IL. They had a daughter, my great-grandmother Mahala Elizabeth Roe, who married Isaac Earl Shelton in Peoria Co., IL.

Reasons for supporting the theory that Judith and David Dalton, Jr. were the parents of Isham (wife Mary Goad) and Samuel (wife Ludah Mustain) Dalton are:

Page 22: Contents 00.pdf · Contents 7 June 1. New Members ... Mason Co. KY Data ... It would explain a lot if Richard and Asenath divorced and Asenath remarried.

•The Benjamin Dalton, Sr. connection: The surety on the 1795 marriage certificate of Isham Dalton and Mary Goad was a Samuel Dalton. (This is not our Samuel who married Seludah Mustain, since our Samuel was born in 1792).

Next week: Theory # 2Please feel free to discuss this theory with Josephine or in the newsletter. Comparing notes and theories is vital to good genealogy.

Josephine's Theories - 2 Josephine Lester, [email protected] ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Theory #2:One theory is that Samuel who died around 1798, leaving widow Milly, was Isham's father. The Benjamin Dalton who also signed the marriage certificate may have been a brother of Isham Dalton.

Another thinking of mine, because of some confusing dates for different names, is that maybe we should be looking for a Samuel Dalton born in 1782 or 1785. Family stories said Ludah was 5 years older than Samuel Dalton so the 1792 date for Samuel Dalton would be correct. As Ludah, born 1787, s ome family stories say there was a wrong birth date for Samuel Dalton so maybe there is a wrong date but it is verified by War of 1812 and other records as correct.

Theory #3: Another theory is the Goad/Thurman and James Dalton connection. Isham Dalton and Mary Goad were married on the same day as Nancy Goad and Joseph Barber. Nancy, Mary and Phoebe Goad were all daughters of Charles and Rachel Goad. Phoebe Goad married Thomas Thurman in 1787 in Pittsylvania Co., VA. The Thomas and Phoebe Thurman family also followed the migration pattern from Highland Co., Ohio to Knox Co., IL. In 1797, Charles Goad sold 140 acres on Frying Pan Creek,

"being part of land which I now live on" to James Dalton, Jr. This may have been the James Dalton who married Agatha Patterson in 1791 in Pittsylvania Co., VA. The James Dalton who married Agatha Patterson is believed to have been a brother of Isham Dalton.

• What's In a Middle NameVA-Roots Discussion sent by Rebecca Dyer, [email protected]

Two good researchers made significant remarks recently about the use of middle names in early Virginia. One of the researchers was Virginia Hamrick. A summation of her comments are:

1. Middle names were not common in the early 1700s. One court justice called for identifier names in 1736.2. Addition of a third/middle name was by necessity when several people had the same names. [Note how this worked in Pittsylvania Co. VA Daltons: John "Flan," John "Spike," John "Tim"]

Kathleen Much was the other contributor whose discussion about names added these observations:

1. From her study of thousands of names in England and Virginia, middle names were very rare until after 1750.2. Those middle names found before the Revolutionary War were usually a family name being carried forward. Given names were also family names.3. After the Rev. War, names other than family names gained popular use, especially in honor of Revolutionary heroes.
