As Jesus prepares the apostles for their mission, he challenges them to face persecution with courage. They are to announce the reign of God by shouting it from the housetops. They are to proclaim in public the truths he has revealed to them in private. Their enemies may harm the disciples' bodies. But their souls are safe in God's hands. Jesus insists that God loves us so much that God has counted every hair on our heads! And God is stronger than all our enemies put together. 1.) Not many of us literally shout our faith from the housetops. Do you speak about your faith with family and friends? 2.) Have you shared your faith in any way with others? If not, why not? Why is it hard to do this? Together, come up with some ways you can share your faith with others: for example, passing along Catholic magazines, contributing to missionary works, asking someone to come to Mass on Sunday with you.

Stanley Francis Rother was born in Oklahoma. He recognized a priestly vocation in his teens, but after five years in the seminary he was turned away. His bishop believed the best priests are not necessarily the intellectuals, but the most committed, so he enrolled Stan in another seminary where the young man studied diligently. After ordination in 1963, Father Rother served five years in parishes before volunteering for mission work in western Guatemala. He ministered to people's spiritual needs, learned the Tzutuhil language, and taught people to read, write, and do basic math. He built a small hospital. Right-wing elites and the military ruled Guatemala. They blamed the Church for "civil unrest." In 1981 beatings, tortures, and murders escalated. Yet Father Rother stayed because he believed Jesus' words, "Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul" (Matthew 10:28). He was shot by a death squad. The psalmist cries out to God, “Lord, in your great love, answer me.” In each of our readings today, there is movement from darkness and despair to trusting in God as our source of salvation. Jeremiah sounds almost a madman as he describes the evil and vileness that surrounds him. In the midst of that terror, he professes his faith in God. Similarly, in Saint Paul’s letter to the Romans, we are reminded that one man, Jesus Christ, came into the world for the sake of many, to overcome the evil and sin that have been prevalent since Adam. In Mark, Jesus calls us from fear, sin, and darkness to live in the light. He reminds us that we are not alone and how very precious each of us is in the eyes of God. Indeed, God hears our cries! PPUUBBLLIICC MMAASSSSEESS Safety Protocols for reopening for public Masses in the Archdioceses of San Francisco. The Archbishop has created safety protocols based on recommendations from Federal and State, as well as Marin, San Mateo and San Francisco County Public Health authorities. As Masses resume at the Church of the Epiphany we ask all parishioners to help in following these guidelines: 1. Dispensation to attend Mass will still be in effect, but is the hope that people will still continue participating in virtual Masses on TV or internet, or that they participate in spiritual or corporal acts of mercy. High-risk groups due to age or health reasons, especially feeling sick, coughing or with fever are asked not to come. 2. The regular schedule of Saturday Vigil and Sunday Masses will be offered. 3. Only 100 people will be allowed to attend each Mass due to social distancing requirements. Everyone will enter through the main doors and exit through the front doors to Amazon or the parking lot. Parishioners will be directed to their pew by ushers who will be following the posted diagrams for seating. 4. Upon entering all parishioners will have their temperature checked, are required to wear masks and an usher will dispense to them hand sanitizer. 5. There will be no parish books in the church and no singing by the congregation. 6. Masses will be no longer than 40 minutes to allow for the church to be cleaned between Masses. 7. Communion will be at the end of the Mass. Ushers will direct parishioners to maintain social distancing and when to remove gloves and masks before receiving Communion.

And challenges still: humanist-reformer, yet champion of Catholic faith and papal primacy. John Paul II named him Patron of Statesmen and Politicians, citing More’s generous work, both as a lawyer and in government service, on behalf of the poorest and most marginalized people of his time, as well as his promotion of education for all sectors of society. More’s decision for principle over politics, conscience over convenience prompted his final words: “I die the king’s good servant, but God’s first.” Alone among England’s bishops, John Fisher dared challenge Henry VIII’s divorce and repudiation of the papacy. When the Pope named the imprisoned Fisher a cardinal, Henry thundered: “Don’t bother sending Fisher’s red hat here; I’ll send Fisher’s head to Rome!” Whose “good servants” are we first? We can deliver groceries, help pay some urgent utility bills, or just visit a while! A person does not have to be Catholic. Please let the office know if a Spanish speaking person is required.

RREETTRROOUUVVAAIILLLLEE This Christian ministry is responsible for providing the tools to help save many tens of thousands of marriages and families over the last forty plus years. The program consists of a weekend experience followed by a series of post weekend sessions. Epiphany wants to make our parishioners and visitors aware of this family saving program. About 50% of married couples are likely to need help at some point. Retrouvaille is NOT group therapy and couples are not asked to share their problems or story with anyone else. The program focuses on teaching communication skills between a husband and wife. Couples are guided through the weekend by three presenting couples and a Catholic priest. The program is open to those of all faith traditions as well as those with no faith beliefs. El Arzobispo ha creado protocolos de seguridad basados en las recomendaciones de las autoridades federales y estatales, así como de las autoridades de salud pública de los condados de Marin, San Mateo y San Francisco. Cuando se reanudan las Misas en la Iglesia de la Epifanía, pedimos a todos los feligreses que ayuden a seguir estas instrucciones: 1. Luis Gonzaga nació en palacio y gozó de la vida cortesana. Desde los cinco años su padre le inició en la vida militar, esperando que además de heredar el trono, hiciera carrera política y militar. Pero su madre quería que fuera sacerdote. A los siete años tuvo una experiencia de Dios y ahí cambió su vida, pues se prometió a sí mismo que sería santo y comenzó a ayunar varias veces por semana. Posteriormente, a los 14 años renunció a su título nobiliario y a sus herencias, cediéndolas a su hermano. Mientras estudiaba filosofía en la Universidad de Alcalá de Henares leyó la vida de los misioneros jesuitas y decidió hacerse jesuita. Ingresó al noviciado jesuita a los 17 años, bajo la dirección de san Roberto Belarmino. Ahí, el padre superior, le pidió que redujera sus horas de oración y a lo extremado de sus penitencias.
