1. Skin PreparationPDI® Chlorascrub™ Swabstick

• Afterlocationofthevein,vigorouslyscrubthevenipuncture  sitewithPDI®Chlorascrub™Swabstickfor30seconds.1

• Allowthesitetoairdrybeforevenipuncture.

•Do not re-palpate the vein.

2.BottlePreparation • Inspecteachbloodculturebottlebeforeusetoensureintegrity 

ofbottleandsensoronbottomofbottleisintact.Thesensor  isnormallyauniformgrayish-greencolorandayellowcolor  wouldindicatecontaminationofthebroth.Discardanybottle  foundtobedamagedorwithasensorthatisyellow.

• Removeprotectiveiptopovercap.

•NOTE:Theseptumisnotsterileandmustbedisinfected.

• Cleansetheseptumwith70%alcohol.

•Thebottlehasbeenpre-markedwith5mlincrements.  Markthedesiredllvolumelevelonthebottlefor10ml.

•WhenusingtheSaf-THolder®BloodCultureDevice(AdaptorCapandInsert),besureluerisconnectedrmlyandtheneedleisstraightwhenenteringandleavingtheseptum.Twistingorturningthebottlemayincreasethechancethatthesheathmaynotretractandreseal.

•Toavoidcontaminationofthebloodculturesample,inoculatebloodculturebottlesrst. Thenlladditionalbloodcollectiontubes.

Septicemiaoccursinapproximately200,000patientseachyear,andbetween30and50%ofthosepatientsdie.Becausethe consequencesofsepticemiaaresoserious,rapidandaccuratediagnosisofthisdisorderiscritical.

TheBloodCultureisthebestdiagnostictoolfordetectingsepticemia,andit’sabsolutelyimperativethatthebloodspecimenbecollectedproperlytoprovideclinicallyvaluableresults. BacT/ALERT®3Dinstrumentsareautomatedsystemsthatincubate,shakeandmonitorculturebottlesforsignsofmicrobialgrowth. SamplesfrompatientssuspectedforsepticemiaareinoculatedintoBacT/ALERTculturebottlesformonitoring.Thebottlesarecolor codedforeasyidenticationofmediatypeandaremadeofplasticforaddedsafety.

Performvenipuncture. Whentheneedleisinthevein,secureitwith

tapeorholditinplace.

septumandpressdowntopenetrateandobtainbloodow.HoldtheAdapterCapdownon thebottle.

Usingthellindicatorlinesonthelabel,obtain8-10mlofblood.Move

theAdapterCapfromtheaerobicbottletotheanaerobic(purpleororangelabel)bottle(ifrequired)andcontinuethecollection.

Ifadditionalbloodisrequiredforothertests,placetheAdapterInsert

intotheAdapterCapandsnapintoplace.Thismakesthecapcompatiblewithvacuumcollectiontubes.

 Whennaltubeislled,removetourniquet.Terminatethe

venipuncture,activatethesafetyshield,grabthewingwithonehandandslidethewingsbackuntilitlocksinplace.
