Radio Frequency Identification

• Little radio stations (frequency = 13.56)• Check out/check in• Security on/off

RFID Chip

RFID Antenna

Tag placed inside book, near spine

Security– Some WCCLS libraries don’t have security– Security and checkout happen simultaneously– Can identify what set off the gate alarm

• Faster, easier • Check out multiple items simultaneously • Verify that all the parts are checking out, too• Unlock cases automatically

Improve self-check

Improve check-in• Ergonomically safer• Save steps • Faster • Can verify contents of some media items

Converting to RFID • Teams apply tags– 1st person puts sticker in item– 2nd person scans barcode – Team can tag ~250 items an hour

• Items tagged as returned • New items – Tagged by vendor– Tagged in tech services

Timeline • August 2011: – Hire Project Manager– Tualatin stops tagging

• September 2011– Vendor demos– Issue RFP

• October 2011: – Choose vendor

• November-June– Tag, tag, tag

Unknown: turn on libraries as tagged, or wait until all libraries are finished?

Future with RFID

• Automatic check-in• Automated Materials Handling
