Captures from the Infest : Photo collage on magazine cover
and inside...!!!
As you will go through the pages of this mini-magazine, I hope that you
enjoy the flavour of our Infest. It is the very first of its kind and
accomplishing this work would have been impossible without the efforts of
my multitalented team. I am highly grateful to them for their efforts and
hope that you’ll appreciate it as well. We always had our sponsors and
publication partner Elsevier for our support and I hope that it enhances
further as our future editions come
As you go through its pages, I hope that it brings back the memories of those
hectic four days full of fervour and ardour. And if a smile, giggle or laugh
flashes upon your face, our efforts will be duly paid... Best Wishes.

My First Infest In a time of a much desired break, "Vertigo" was
everything I asked for. „Vertigo- embrace the
ebullience‟ was as rocking as the name sounds.
I tried my hands on everything which i earlier thought
was not my portfolio. Fashion show, twisted film, treasure
hunt and all the literary events were a big hit. Though I
felt a little dizzy after donating blood, but the very feeling of saving a life motivated me
along with my friends. Actually we were the first ones to inaugurate the “beds”. I was
especially excited as Tejas had handed over the responsibility of preparing general trivia
quiz to me. Well aware of his standards, i really had my honour and respect at stake.
But i managed to pull off a pretty good job.
Infest is a great time to find out hidden talents and passions. People like Samagra and
Lokesh found out theirs at the cacophonics... Quite a hilarious and ‘nerve wracking’
performance.... Treasure hunt stuck the brains out of me.. It appeared as if I was Robert
Langdon in search of a „lofty quest‟... Sports events allowed me to realise that there are
much better chess players than me (sigh)... The interaction with faculty and especially
with Dr. Bir Singh and Dr. Paul helped to realize that there is more to AIIMS and life
than just „MBBS‟.
Waking up at 10 for fashion show at 10.15 with no practice and just walking the ramp
with face paint will always ‘haunt’ me. Bombardment of tomatoes and eggs in twisted
film will always be etched in my memory. JAM is always fun, and when it is conducted
by Venky, there is an extra tint of glimmer and humour attached to it. Distributing
toffees and condoms (for a very big social cause) was very well appreciated by audience
and participants alike... Infest-2011 was a great time to loosen up a bit and explore
hidden talents. Though i was not convinced with the title name of infest initially, the
final day rain dance with an awesome DJ proved that I was wrong and I finally
experienced „vertigo‟...

The Infest Inaugural
Infest is the emblem of the festive spirit of AIIMS. A vivid representation of our talents,
skills, strength, creativity, team-work, showmanship and very importantly congeniality.
This year our Chief Guest was our Dean Dr. Rani Kumar. Though it was to be Dr Deka, Director AIIMS, but he couldn’t join us due to some urgent appointment. Our Guest of Honour was Dr. Rakesh Yadav, Sub-Dean and along with him we had other dignitaries like Dr. D K Sharma, Medical Superintendent; Dr. Bir
Singh, Secretary AIIMSONIANS and Mr V. P. Gupta, Registrar.
The programme witnessed a welcome address by the students’ union president and thereafter series of sort speeches delivered by the Chief Co-ordinator Himanshu Kanwat and the eminent guests. The entire show was anchored by me and the beautiful Isha from the second semester. The winding up words were the vote of thanks from Harshit Garg which elated the evening
(hilariously by the way...!!!).
Along with the gala events forecasted ahead, this day brought another reason for us to smile. After so much of wait, we had the
release of the 12th Edition of HYBRID HUES. The magazine editor Ms. Shweta Shubhdarshini presented the very first copies to the chief guest and hence the hall was filled up with appreciation
and applauds.
The function was glittered by the funky jazz_tango_hip-hop mixdown performed by the young AIIMSONIANS from 2nd, 4th & 6th sem and seriously speaking, no club would have been able to handle them at that time. In the end, we all watched a thoughtful work by Mr. Abhay Kumar, a magnificent short film about life and its meaning. It certainly left us spellbound. Actually it was the most
happening and eventful Infest inaugural that I’ve seen yet.
Though I have attended only one Infest in my life (pretty unfortunately) but I’ve been there for all the inauguration days (pretty fortunately). My bonding with the event started in 2009 when I did the stage conduction for the day. I was taken aback to see the startlingly low number of people in audience side. The seniors taught me, “yeh aisa hi hota hai har saal”. And trust me it is really heartbreaking to see that aisa hi hota jaa raha hai har saal. Even though the number of people has increased per batch but the size of Infest audience has not. I hope that the people may realise that it
is not all about long and boring speeches and turn up in good numbers to shine up the Audi.
After all it is all about our INFEST; our celebration and our spirit to celebrate.

Lets heap up our palettes
with hues of blue, green and scarlet,
Coz it’s time to shade and scrape
to say what the words could not.
Lets carve out the models
of castles and dancing damsels,
out of this mess of mud and muck
And make the world stop and gape.
Swirl of stipples and shallow strokes,
And excuberence of lurid polytones
Fail to paint this day's joy;no wonder
this one is for hearts, not for the canvas...

As always the infest happens to be a colourful time on our calendars. It is the occasion when once in a year, almost everyone around tries his or hand with the paintbrush. Some talents are discovered here every year and for some people, it is a the discovery of themselves. The chores begin with the task of making the Infest Rangoli and the celebration just goes on... Here’s a look at the Fine-Arts activities this time:

The fine arts events have been of our prime interest from all the times and
this year, we had its conduction under our charge. Must say that it instilled
us with a sense of proud and responsibility. Though some hurdles did come
our way, but by and for all was well. We really enjoyed working with our
helping companions and wish that the spirit remains the same through the
ages... Good luck friends.

Exhilarating for some, heartrending for
others but enlightening and intellectually
satisfying for all, the
literary division of
Vertigo was filled
with action,
excitement,
tension and some
intense brain
racking. The
electrifying nature of
the competition
proved beyond
doubt the inherent
talent and latent
prowess of the AIIMS undergraduates when it
comes to the battle
of wits.
With a mouth-
watering General
Quiz lined up on
the first day, the
attendance was
heart-warming. Kartik set the ball rolling with
a very well crafted quiz, which provided an
evening of sharp entertainment. All our fears
of the questions being too difficult were
washed away and after a well fought final,
Ojha and Venky triumphed edging past
Savinay and Haneesh.
After such a thrilling beginning, we were left
asking for more. We didn’t have to wait for
too long as the Dumb Charades made by
Kartik and Amenda was a real treat. It’s really
amazing how these guys stepped up and
delivered wonderful events in their first Infest
itself. The mood
was set and even
after Ojha and
Savinay won, we
kept on playing till
3 in the night.
If the first day
was awesome, we
had to wait till day
two to be
awestruck. In what
must be the more
controversial and yet the most exciting event
of the fest, Wamique produced a wonderful
India Quiz. His quirky
nature
definitely won
him a lot of
fans that night
evidenced by
the passionate response he generated. His
arduous questions and stern officiating
ensured the success of what threatened to
turn into a Lok Sabha adjournment rather
than a test of brainpower. The presence of
the dashing damsels in the scene was also a
welcome respite. As expected the post interns
came, saw and conquered: hats off to Venky,
Dr D and Harkirat.
A dinner break was warranted after the
drenching tension. But the night was still
young, as we had a session of

Hieroglyphics yet to play out. One of the
literary events with greater mass appeal, it
was slightly disappointing to see a low
turnout. But the contest was no less stiff as
the newbie” V for Vendetta” (Khushaal,
Vrishketan) gave a real run for the money to
the experienced “Wamique Keema”. The
latter were much benefitted by the artful
sketches of Deva. Ketan and Savinay were
spot-on when it came to guessing and
deservingly walked
away with the prize.
The third day was
perhaps the most
awaited with the
prospective Sports
and Science
quizzes and the
pinnacle of the literary
events, the Password.
The sports quiz clashed with the very popular
Treasure Hunt, but still managed to extract
the aficionados. The event turned out to be a
rather one sided affair though, as an inspired
Ojha led his team to a convincing victory
accompanied by a couple of terrific answers
from Savinay.
The Science quiz was refreshingly
sprightly, conducted by the inimitable Soumya
Sagar. There were moments where we
suspected that we were sitting in a ballistics
conference, but the questions on weaponry
aside the event was well received. Especially,
the round on funny questions from Science
left our funny bones tickled. The seniors again
ended on top and not without good reason, as
they proved that they still know more of
practical science than us younglings fresh
from the doses of PCMB.
Everything up till now was just a prelude for
the real Test Match of literary fests, the king
of all events, the password. A test of
abstract thinking, judgement, knowledge, guts
and most of all endurance, this six hour
marathon lasted till well past five in the
morning. Frustrations were high among the
participants, the event moderator was pitiless
and the competition was literally cutthroat. V
for Vendetta ran
into an early lead of
over a hundred
points, with the
help of a few gutsy
guesses from
Khushaal and
Vrishketan. But
little did they know
that this event,
much like a
Quidditch match,
can turn around in a
matter of hours. Recharged with a pizza break
just in the nick of time (i.e. before Slice of Italy
closed for the night!), “Wamique Keema”
(Savinay, Ketan) and “The Womb Raiders”
(Wamique, Ojha, Venky) left behind the
courageous first timers from the fourth sem
and became embroiled in their own stormy
skirmish for supremacy. In the end, Wamique
Keema just proved too good on the night (er,
morning?) and we went to our beds still
dripping in adrenaline.
The stage was now set for the grand finale,
the terrorizing JAM conducted by the
intimidating JAM moderator, Venky. Even a
sizable and ruthless crowd could not deter a
record participation and for the first time in
recent history we needed an elimination
round. Venky, who was officiating what is
likely to be his last JAM in the institute was
witty and his topics were tongue-in-cheek and

laugh-out-loud. Two hours of discussion on topics ranging from
Rajnikanth to body proportions ensued and the audiences were
engaged and enthralled. It was a fitting end to a superb series of
events and I enjoyed in particular for good reason!
So, looking back at those four days, I feel immense gratitude for
everyone who took out time from the busy schedules to make the
events. Also, it felt great that the regulars all participated regularly
and new members joined our lively fraternity. The fachchas and
fourth semmers showed a big heart (à la Shadid Afridi) in showing
up and though
they were
unable to win,
all I can say to
them is that
the future is
theirs. I hope
they will chip
in even more
enthusiasticall
y in Pulse and
the years to
come. I also
do hope that we see more members of the fairer sex at the
literary events: it’s not all about quizzing!
The best part however was the reincarnation of a literary flavour
to the campus, as evidenced by the tremendous success of
Wamique’s new Facebook group, The AIIMS Quizzers aka The
Womb Raiders. I hope that the wave keeps going strong in the
months to come.

Human follies, prejudices, friendship, love, misunderstandings, and bitterness were the aspects upon
which our choreography storyline was developed; based none other
than our actual relationships with one another. We had arguments on
every single issue, from the story, the hero/heroine, the costumes, the
music, the dance steps, and last (but unfortunately among the most
important!), finance. It may be safe to say that it was these fights and
the reaching of common consensus that enabled us to filter out only the
best of ideas, and make our choreo up to the mark.
Akhil Monga and Harshita Bamnawat performing an amazing waltz
The foremost task was relegation of the responsibility. After much ado,
we decided that Meghal was to be the choreo secy. We ought to be
congratulated for the choice, for she so gracefully swam against a high
tide to achieve the grace in others’ dances. Each man/woman thought
himself to be the most talented of the lot. Many seemed to think that
the rest of us had all the time in the world to wait for their highnesses to
come to practice, that too with the mood to dance. Those twenty odd
days were gruesome for all of us, for we had to put up with some of the
worst aspects of each others’ personalities, which inevitably sprout out
when work is to be completed within deadline. Naturally, tempers were
lost more than once...!!! Some of the NIGHTMARES and DAILY DOSE OF
STRESS in all that fiasco)
Dancing to the Colours of Human Life...
Love triangles are not rare in the world. Such is the story of Cameron, Lydia, and Sara.
Cameron is a handsome lad, the object of affection of two of his college mates... Lydia, the beautiful, popular albeit manipulative girl of every boy’s dreams, and Sara, relatively plain faced but sweet hearted, who can alas only throw longing
glances at Cameron and Lydia as they display their tenderness for one another. Tragedy befalls the couple however in the form of an accident that steals Cameron’s eyesight. The double faced Lydia, finding this handicap unacceptable, deserts him. It is in
these moments of darkness that Sara comforts Cameron, and the latter clears Lydia from his thoughts to make space for Sara in his heart. Thus the two live happily ever after in true love.

- The boys don’t seem to be practicing at all and they aren’t submitting their
music. Plus they edit the music every other day. What’s happening?
- We’ll lose the choreo solely due to the pathetic waltz, the song for
which was decided only a few days before the event, that too
suggested by a concerned senior. (which incidentally ended up rather
magnificently)
- We haven’t touched our books for over a month. We’re going to fail!
- Saboo and Gary and Afzal and Niki are doing the couple dance better
than Monga and Harshita due to lack of practice by the main couple.
- Cricket matches in between meant absolutely no productive work
that whole evening (and night and the next morning as well, if it was
a win for India), for such was the sudden tenacity of all for the game.
- Crazy rumours that choreo will be cancelled due to political reasons,
and all our time and energy will be for naught.
- Even crazier rumours that our very steps would be performed by some
fun loving seniors before us.
And the list goes on. However, the positive side was that we broke through many
prejudices, bonding closely with some whose very guts we had earlier hated. And not to forget, it
was super fun dancing till we dropped every day and night. (Who would have guessed that we would
one day lose sleep trying to imitate reality dance shows?) The best part however (all the girls would
agree) was the weight lost in the process. Watching the practice for the couple dance was an
excellent past time for the otherwise jobless. And the Saadi Gali practice was hilarious because our
aim was to make it as masala-full as possible.
Sunday morning saw our fiasco on the fashion ramp, where we made complete fools of ourselves.
That morning, we were still uncoordinated and ill prepared for choreo. But we were tired of
mediocrity by then, and we slogged away the entire afternoon, sweating it through 3 run throughs.
Finally we were all fully prepared for the battle on stage.
The grand finale went beautifully, as surmised from the boisterous cheers of the audience. There was a minor snag of sound in between which was easily solved after giving a 5 to 6 second panic attack to those on the stage at the moment. Isha (Lydia) did her scene of rejecting her blind lover (Cameron/Monga) remarkably. Monga’s blindfold dance was the most appreciated. The boys’ dance had contagious energy (at least to us biased viewers from the side of the stage!), and the hoots told us how great the
other dances were. Oh and yes, Harshita and Monga waltzed with such chemistry that one could almost believe they were indeed the couple destined to live happily ever after in our story. Yes, our choreo was all about human feelings, including the feelings of comradeship and exhilaration upon our victory, satisfaction and relief that it was finally over, and dread about the danceless days of monotonous studies to come.

A Day to cherish—A Musical Extravaganza
Algos literally translates to pain; suffering…Why u ask me?? well being a med student (most)
probably u know the better of it…but then let’s leave its interpretation to your imagination for
now…’coz like everything else it’s also got a story to it but let’s face it who am I to comment on
that…waise for further reference of its etymology feel free to contact Dr Saurabh Singhal (yes
your friendly neighbour!!) . Its earlier avatar was TABS-The AIIMS Band and then Agnes for a
short while. Skyroof and Trace Elements were the earlier versions in the rocky days of yore
that is still cherished amongst many here.
Algos (as in the name) debuted last year under the able aegis of Dr Saurabh Singhal and Dr
Kishore Kumar. This time with them not around Cijin (P
Jose) more than rose to the challenge and proved
himself worthy of the mantle that he wore. He took
the lead in guitars (plus exhibited his versatility in his
synthesizer prowess as well). Accompanying him on the
guitars was Jewen (Dulal) (our very own So-cult secy)
who despite his quiet, gentle and cool demeanour
prefers to speak through his guitar and with that he
can surely blow you off your feet. Finding a drummer
was a tough ask but then Cijin (with his organizational
skills here) found just the drummer the band needed
in Ashish (Sharma) Bsc and as everyone present on the occasion knew he sure did a hell of a job!!
Ttsering Ppenjore, a very talented lad on the bass was a total delight for everyone. People just
loved to see him play and simply couldn’t resist asking for more of him... (U get what I mean
right??;))
10th April 2011,3.30 pm JLN Auditorium(our Audi yaar!) (Well it started well past that but still
pretty soon according to AIIMS standard time):
The curtains rose and off went the opening number with the instruments giving a befitting start
to the show!!!The audience were in for a treat and they knew it. Jatin (Agarwal)(yes the dude
you can’t help but notice..he can make a good emcee u see)started off and belted out one
chartbusting song after another-the likes of ‘Smoke on the Water’, ‘Carnival of Rust’, ‘Sultans of
Swing’, ‘Nothing else matters’…The crowd was in a frenzy!!! His last number -‘Emptiness’ was a
total sold out. People all singing, enjoying it plus a Hindi senti song at that, people just jived in on
it!!!That just set the stage on fire-which apparently became difficult for me to handle
subsequently-probably the reason I messed up with ‘Complicated’ though it isn’t a complicated
song at that. I came back on track but not exactly the way I wanted it to be. Waise I can’ t blow
my trumpet here (how could u even think!!It’s a sin!!)So I would just say that hailing from a land
where every other person has Ma Saraswati residing in their voice it was difficult for me to
follow my dreams. And from being a bathroom singer (yeah am not ashamed of it!!) and singing

for just the 4 walls around to singing on stage in front of a whole bunch of real people -friends,
well wishers-yeah it was just the dream I had dreamt long time back. And trust me it was a real
treat to see people out in the audience singing along with you and Wamique’ s (yes our very own!)
sing-along with my ‘Animal Instinct’ gave the real boost and joy that you relish when on the mike.
Next came the Nightingale-Sristi (Saha) and enthralled the audience with her melodious voice
and uber-cool attitude with the blockbuster hit-‘Iktara’. Being a popular number that it is, you
could see the entire hall swaying along with the melody of the song. People were singing it out
loud. It was a momentous moment for all. Her voice, her charm-uff!!!! Baap re baap too much to
handle…. And how can a band performance in AIIMS (or for that matter probably anywhere else) come to
an end without ‘Sutta’ (a burning hot favourite) with Jatin & co. jiving the audience.
As the curtains downed on yet another performance by The Algos the audience sure went back
home with a feel good feeling about it all I bet!!!
