Flange Detail
Eatons new EZ box and EZ trimrepresents the first significant change
in panelboard box and trim designs inmore than a half-century. The EZ boxand EZ trim have been designed forfaster, more secure and safer installa-tions. The new EZ box and EZ trim areprovided standard for Cutler-HammerPow-R-Line 1a and Pow-R-Line 2alighting panelboards, as well as ourPow-R-Line 3a mid-range panelboard.

The EZ box flanges are bent andpainted, which virtually eliminatesthe sharp edges associated withtraditional boxes. Additionally, all steelpanelboard chassis parts are painted.This significantly reduces potentialinjury for material handlers and install-ers. Each flange is adjustable outward
up to 3/4 inch. This feature allowsthe installer to adjust flush boxapplications to be level and flat with
the finished wall after the wallmaterial is installed to help correctwall irregularities. The new box flangealso provides the means for attachingthe EZ trim.

EZ Box and EZ Trim
Fast Installation
The EZ trim incorporates a patent pending, ground breakingdesign that installs in seconds, rather than minutes. Thestandard trim features include door-in-door construction;no exposed hardware and no tools are required forinstallation.
Each EZ trim includes hangers attached on the right side.The bottom trim hanger has a notch in its base. To install,the bottom hanger is inserted into the bottom right sidebox flange opening, resting the notch on the flange.

The balance of the hangers are aligned with the other flangeopenings and pushed in. When all hangers are in the boxflange, the trim is lifted up slightly to clear the notch on thebottom hanger, and the trim in self-supported on the EZ box.
The installation is completed by swinging the trim to theclosed position, then lifting and pushing slightly to the right.The trim will drop into place totally secured. The multi-pointcatches on the left side of the trim will lock into the left side
box flange openings.
To prevent the trim from being removed by non-authorizedpersons, a unique sliding means automatically latchesin place when the trim door is closed. For added safety, ascrew is provided to secure the latch for those who requireextra security.
The new EZ trim utilizes an exclusive catch systemthat fastens the door to multiple points. Along with a newlock, the EZ trim offers a high degree of door security.

panelboards are designed forsequence phase connection of branchcircuit devices. This allows completeflexibility of circuit arrangement(1-, 2- or 3-poles) to allow balance ofthe electrical load on each phase.
Sturdy, rigid chassis assembly ensuresaccurate alignment of interior withpanel front; prevents flexing andminimizes possibility of looseningor damage to current carrying partsduring and after installation.
Four-point in-and-out adjustment ofpanel interior is provided to meet criti-cal depth dimensions on flush installa-
tions. This compensates for possiblemisalignment of box at installation.
Main lugs are mechanical solderlesstype and approved for copper oraluminum conductors.
Enclosures
Boxes are code-gauge galvanized steelexcept for column type panelboardswhich include a painted box finished inANSI-61 light gray to match the trim.
Standard panelboard cabinets aredesigned for indoor use. Alternatetypes are available for indoor andspecial purpose applications.
All enclosures are furnished in accor-dance with Underwriters Laboratoriesstandards and include wiring gutterswith proper wire bending space.Special cabinets can be providedat an additional charge.
The box dimensions shown are insidedimensions. For outside dimensions,add 1/4-inch (6.4 mm).
Standard panelboard boxes are supplied
without knockouts (blank endwalls).
Fronts
Fronts (trims) for all panelboards are
made of code-gauge steel and havea high durability ANSI-61 light grayfinish applied by a baked-on polyesterpowder coating paint system.

Pow-R-Line C Panelboards
Application Description
The fronts for lighting and appliancebranch circuit panelboards and smallpower distribution panelboards includea door with rounded corners and con-cealed hinges. A flush-type latch andlock assembly is included. All locks arekeyed alike. These trims are available inboth surface and flush mounted designs.

The Three-Piece Trim for Larger PowerDistribution Panelboards Provides for EasyHandling and Installation
Fronts for power distribution panel-boards utilize a unique breaker frontcover design in which each device hasa dedicated bolt-on steel cover. Theindividual covers form a single dead-front for the panelboard that is usedin conjunction with two wiring guttercovers to complete the trim. A dooris not finished as part of the standardoffering on these panelboards but canbe provided, for an additional charge,using a deeper than standard box.
Application Description
Panelboard Selection FactorsIn selecting a panelboard, the follow-ing factors must be considered:
Service (voltage and frequency). Interrupting capacity (fully or
series rated).
Ampere rating of main.
Ampere ratings of branches.
Environment.
Panelboard Short Circuit RatingThe short circuit rating of EatonsCutler-Hammer assembled panel-boards are test verified by, and listedwith, Underwriters Laboratories(UL).Generally, these ratings are that ofthe lowest interrupting rated devicein the panel.
Certain exceptions to this rule existwhere branch devices have been ULtested in combination with specificmain devices having a higher inter-rupting rating. Where these definedmain devices and branch breaker com-binations are utilized, the Series ShortCircuit Ratingof the assembled panel-board will be the same as the testedrating of the approved rated maindevice in series with the branches.Available main and branch breakercombinations are tabulated startingon Page 14-12. All combinationsshown are UL tested and listed.
These series ratings apply to panelshaving main devices, or main lugonly panelboards fed remotely bythe device listed in the series ratingschart as the main, for which UL listedtests were conducted.
Service Entrance EquipmentThe National Electrical Code (NEC)requires that:
A panel used as service entranceequipment must be located near thepoint where the supply conductorsenter the building.
A panelboard having main lugs onlyshall have a maximum of six servicedisconnects to de-energize theentire panelboard from the supplyconductors. Where more thansix disconnects are required, amain service disconnect mustbe provided.
A disconnectable electrical bondmust be provided between theneutral and ground.
A service entrance type UL labelmust be factory installed.
Ground fault protection of equip-ment shall be provided for each ser-vice disconnect rated 1000 amperesor more if the electrical service is
a solidly grounded wye systemof more than 150 volts to groundbut not exceeding 600 volts phase-to-phase.
Note: Service entrance panels must beidentified as such on the order.
Panelboard ClassificationsPanelboards are classified by NEC andUL in two general categories: Lightingand Appliance Panels and PowerDistribution Panels.
Lighting and Appliance PanelboardsLighting and appliance branch circuit
panelboards are defined in NEC(Article 408) as one having more than10 percent of its overcurrent devicesrated 30 amperes or less for whichneutral connections are provided.Article 408 also limits the number ofovercurrent devices (branch circuit-poles) to a maximum of 42 in any onecabinet. This rule applies to all paneltypes including PRL4 when the panelcircuitry comes within the scope of thisdefinition. When the 42 devices (poles)are exceeded, two or more separatepanels are required.
Power Distribution PanelboardsDistribution panelboards (all othersnot defined as lighting and appliancebranch circuit panelboards) arerestricted only to practical physicallimitations such as standard boxheights and widths. It is importantto note that the NEC requires thatthe operating handle of the topmostmounted device be no more than6 feet 7 inches (2006.6 mm) abovethe finished floor.
Additional boxes and fronts arerequired when the componentsrequired for one panelboard exceedthe standard box dimensions.
Multi-Section PanelboardsWhen more than 42 overcurrentprotective devices are required (See,Lighting and Appliance Panelboards),two or more separate enclosures arerequired. Separate fronts for each boxare standard. A common front canbe furnished at additional charge.

Interconnecting Multi-SectionPanelboardsWhen a panelboard, for connection toone feeder, must be furnished in morethan one section (Box), each sectionmust be furnished with main bus andterminals of the same rating, unlessa main overcurrent device is providedin each section.
Sub-feed or through-feed provisionsmust also be included (and priced) toprovide connection capability to thesecond section.
Note: Sub-feed or through-feed lugs can-not be used on any panelboard that is notprotected by a single main overcurrentdevice either in the panelboard or immedi-ately upstream, i.e., service entrance panel-boards with main lugs only using the sixdisconnect rule.
Sub-Feed LugsSub-feed lugs (see Figure 14-1) areone means of interconnecting multi-section panels. The sub-feed (secondset of) lugs are mounted directlybeside the main lugs. These arerequired in each section except the lastpanel in the lineup. The feeder cablesare brought into the wiring gutter ofthe first section and connected to themain lugs. Another set of the samesize cables are connected to the sub-feed lugs (Section 1) and are carriedover to the main lugs of the adjacentpanel. Cross connection cables are notfurnished by Eaton. Sub-feed lugs areonly available on main lug only panels.
Note: Sub-feed lugs may not be used onmain lug only (six disconnect rule) serviceentrance panels.

Through-Feed LugsThrough-feed lugs (see Figure 14-2)are another method to interconnectmulti-section panelboards. The incom-ing feeder cables are connected to themain lugs or main breaker at the bot-
tom of panel (Section 1). Another setof lugs (through-feed) are located atthe opposite end of the main bus. Theinterconnecting cables are connectedto the through-feed lugs in Section 1and are carried over to the main lugsin Section 2. The connection arrange-ment could be reversed, i.e., main lugsat top; through-feed lugs at bottomend of panel. Cross cables are notfurnished by Eaton.
Note: Through-feed lugs may not beused on main lug only (six disconnect rule)service entrance panels.

Branch Circuit Loading for Lightingand Appliance PanelsThe size of mains and branches shouldbe selected based on the following:
Lighting and distribution circuits:
NEC Article 210, 215, 220 and 240. Motor circuits: NEC Article 430.
Diversity factor.
Provision for future loading.
Exception Number 1:Individual pro-tection for a lighting and appliancepanelboard is not required when thepanelboard feeder has overcurrentprotection not greater than that ofthe panelboard.
Exception Number 2:For existinginstallations, individual protection forlighting and appliance branch circuitpanelboards is not required where
such panelboards are used as serviceequipment in supplying an individualresidential occupancy and where anybus supplying 15 or 20 ampere circuitsis protected on the supply side by anovercurrent device.
Ambient TemperaturesThe primary function of an overcurrentdevice is to protect the conductor andits insulation against overheating. Inselecting the size of the devices andconductors, consideration should begiven to the ambient temperature sur-rounding the conductors within andexternal to the panelboard. Cumula-
tive heating within the panelboardmay cause premature operation ofthe overcurrent protective devices.
Underwriters Laboratories testprocedures are based, in part, on 80%loading of panelboard branch circuitdevices. The NEC limits the loading ofovercurrent devices in panelboards to80% of rating where in normal opera-tion the load will continue for threehours or more. Further derating maybe required, depending on such factorsas ambient temperature, duty cycle,frequency or altitude.
Exception:There is one exception tothis rule in both UL and NEC. It appliesto assemblies and overcurrent deviceswhich have been approved for contin-uous duty at 100% of its rating.
Special ConditionsStandard panelboards, assembledwith standard components, are ade-quate for most applications. However,special consideration should be givento those required for application under
special conditions such as:
Excessive vibration or shock.
Frequencies above 60 cycles.
Altitudes above 6600 feet (2011.7 m).
Damp environment (possible fungusgrowth).
Compliance with federal, stateand municipal electrical codesand standards.
Seismic ConsiderationsThe Uniform Building Codeand theInternational Building Code 2003, aswell as local and state building codes,
place an emphasis on seismic buildingdesign requirements. Electricaldistribution systems are treatedas attachments to the building andtherefore, fall into this category.
All Eatons Cutler-Hammer panel-boards are seismic qualified at thehighest possible level, Seismic Zone 4,and have been tested in accordancewith ANSI C37.81. This standard quan-tifies actual earthquake conditions, aswell as equipment seismic capability.
Harmonic CurrentsStandard panelboard neutrals are
rated for 100% of the panelboardcurrent. However, since harmoniccurrents can cause overheatedneutrals, an option is provided forneutrals to be rated at 200% (1200ampere maximum neutral for 600ampere main bus) of the panelboardphase current.
Panelboards with the 200% ratedneutral are UL listed as suitable foruse with non-linear loads.
Prior to specifying the 200% ratedneutral, Eaton recommends a harmonicsurvey be conducted of the distributionsystem, be it new or existing.
Transient Voltage Surge SuppressionThe quality of power feeding sensitiveelectronic loads is critical to the reliableoperation of any facility. In modernoffices, hospitals, and manufacturingfacilities, the most frequent causes ofmicroprocessor-based equipmentdowntime and damage are voltagetransients and electrical noise.
Electrical loads and microprocessor-based equipment are highly susceptibleto both high and low energy transients.High energy transients include lightninginduced surges and power companyswitching. These high energy transientscan destroy components instantly.
More frequently the electrical systemexperiences low energy transients andhigh frequency noise.
The effects of continual low energytransients and high frequency noisecan cause erratic equipment perfor-mance or sudden failure of electroniccircuit board components.
Eaton can provide protective and diag-nostic systems integral to panelboards.The Clipper Power System Visor Seriesis integrated into the panelboardsusing a zero lead length direct busbar connection.
Pow-R-Line 4
The CPS Visor Series providesTransient Voltage Surge Suppression(TVSS) and active hybrid filtering.The CPS protects sensitive electronicequipment from the damaging effectsof high and low energy transients,as well as high frequency noise.

Series Rated CombinationsUnderwriters Laboratories permitspanelboards to be labeled with a shortcircuit rating of up to 200,000 amperes(symmetrical) where UL listed combi-nations of main and branch circuit
breakers are used.
These combinations consist of mainbreakers or fusible devices connectedahead of, and in series with approvedconventional breakers used as branchdevices.
Two arrangements are acceptable andcomply with UL standards for panel-boards. The main circuit breaker orfusible switch may be installed in thepanel as a main device, or it may bemounted remote, (directly upstream)from the panel.In either case, theapproved main and branch combina-tions must be followed. These
arrangements are acceptable andare UL listed having been tested inaccordance with UL 67 standards.
From the tables that follow, specificcombinations of main devices(upstream) and branch devices(downstream), series connected andelectrically adjacent in the system,may be selected to qualify theassembled panelboard for the shortcircuit ratings shown.
Applying Series Ratings
The following is provided to use theseries rating tables on the followingpages.
1. Determine the available systemvoltage and fault current.
2. Select the appropriate table usingthe system voltage.
3. Use the appropriate SeriesEquipment Rating column equalto, or greater than, the availablefault current, to determine theallowable UL recognized combina-tions of main (upstream) andbranch (downstream) overcurrentdevices. Main devices are shownin bold/shaded areas. Respectivebranch breakers are showndirectly below their associatedmain device. If a rating is not
initially found in a column, firstlook to the columns to the rightfor higher Series EquipmentRatings within the same table.If still not found, use ratings fromtable of a higher system voltage(higher numbered table(s).

Assembled Circuit Breaker Panelboards
Box size and box and trim catalognumbers for all standard panelboardtypes are found in Table 14-21.
Instructions1. Using description of the required
panelboard, select the rating andtype of main required.
2. Count the total number of branchcircuit poles, including provisions,required in the panelboard. Do notcount main breaker poles. Convert2- or 3-pole branch breaker tosingle-poles, i.e., 3-pole breaker,count as 3 poles.
Determine sub-feed breaker orthrough-feed lug requirements.
3. Select the main ampere ratingsection from Table 14-21.
4. Select panelboard type from firstcolumn, main breaker frame, ifapplicable, from second column,and sub-feed breaker frame, ifapplicable, from the third column.
5. From Step #2, determine the num-ber of branch circuits in Column 4.
6. Read box size, box and trimcatalog numbers across columnsto the right. Specify surface orflush mounting on the order.
