Issue No 4– Term 1, 2013 22 February 2013
Swimming Carnival Congratulations to everyone who came along to enjoy the fun of our annual school
swimming carnival on Monday. While the weather looked threatening, it remained fine
for the carnival and proved to be a great day for everyone. There were a range of events for the competitive swimmers as well as for
those who just wanted to get wet and have fun. Mr McKee and Mr Dewberry did an
excellent job in organising the carnival. Remember that anyone who was absent needs to supply a note with an explanation.
Open Girls Cricket
Our open girls’ cricket team is off to Newcastle at the beginning of next week to
play in the State quarter finals. The team has achieved some outstanding results at the end
of last year and we wish them the very best in their trip south.
Floods Again? With the warnings of further rain and possible floods, I encourage parents to keep students
home if there is a risk you have to go through flood waters or you may get cut off
by rising waters. Just contact the school to explain the issue and the absence will be noted as explained leave. I do wish everyone
a safe weekend and coming week.
Laptops What a fantastic turn out of parents and students on Tuesday night for our laptop
meeting. Thank you for showing interest and being involved. It was greatly appreciated.
Even though this is the last year of the current program of laptop roll outs, I still encourage people to be active in voicing their
interest and wish for the program to continue. Year 9 students will start receiving
their laptops from early next week.
New Information Booths We are in the process of installing new information TVs around our school. The TVs
show the daily messages, important points, Key Learning Area (KLA) information, photos
and a QR code record that students can access using their smart phones. The QR code links back to our messages so students
can take a copy of the messages with them.
Year 12 Study Skills Day The Year 12 advisers from Grafton High and South Grafton High Schools have worked
together to organise a program and guest presenters to help Year 12 students be better
organised and hopefully get the most out of their time in their final year. The day is planned for next Monday 25 February at
Grafton District Ex-services Club. I encourage every student to attend. There is a cost to
cover the presenters and resources given out.

Student Volunteer Program Since the NSW Government ceased its
involvement in the Student Volunteer Program, we have decided to develop our own. Ms Fletcher and Ms Carle are the
coordinators and they already have a number of students involved in the new program. We
have developed a range of certificates based on hours volunteered as well as prizes and scholarships for students who reach the
highest levels. The program is open to students in Years 8 – 11. Again, I encourage
everyone to think about being involved and helping out both within the school and in the wider community.
Coming events
1. Our SRC leaders will be away at their leadership camp next week.
2. Many subjects at our school involve the use of consumable materials. These
subjects have a subject fee as part of studying the subject. It is important these fees are paid to enable the faculties to
afford the items that are used by students during the courses.
3. The 2013 Premiers Reading Challenge starts on 1 March 2013. Registration can occur via www.premiersreadingchallenge.nsw.edu.au or you can see your English teacher.
4. Southern Cross Cultural Exchange program has information available for
exchange programs in other countries. See the library for further details.
SRC Boardies Day – Friday 22 February – wear
board shorts to support Surf Life Saving. All donations will go to Minnie Water Surf Life Saving Club. Students must wear their white
school shirt. Social – Our first social for the year to
welcome Year 7 will be held on Wednesday 20 March with the theme SAFARI and music by DJ Jayden Reti. Start planning your
costume and join in the fun. SRC Camp – Next week the SRC will be
travelling to Runaway Bay for their annual leadership skills camp. Thank you – to all students who supported
our Valentine’s Day fundraiser – it was a huge success.
Have you registered your interest in the Quicksmart Program For Your Child?
QuickSmart will improve automatic recall of basic number facts. This in turn improves student confidence to attempt new work.
QuickSmart has been successful with both B and C stream Mathematics students from
Years 7-10. Just ask any of the 120 students from last year’s program. Many students have been placed in higher level Mathematics
classes as a result. Students in the QuickSmart program are
allocated a tutor and work twice a week with them using flashcards, speedsheets, graphing and content work.
There are limited places in the program. A computer CAAS assessment determines if a
student is eligible. Students can register their interest by popping into G14- the QuickSmart Room - and parents can register interest for
their child by phoning the QuickSmart room mobile 0447421460. More information about
this program can be found on the schools website or http://www.une.edu.au/simerr/quicksmart/p
ages/index.php
School Vaccinations In 2013 North Coast Public Health Unit will again be offering a vaccination service at our
school. Boys in NSW high schools will be offered human papillomavirus (HPV)
vaccination from 2013 to provide protection against developing infections that can lead to cancer. In 2013, the three dose course of
vaccine will be offered for the first time to: Year 7 boys as part of the routine school
based vaccination program; Year 9 boys as part of the national ‘catch up’ program in
2013 and 2014 only. The vaccine is highly effective in preventing the main types of HPV infection and is most
effective when it is given to people before they are exposed to the virus. As well as
protecting males from HPV infections, immunising young men will also help protect women from infection.
The vaccine is registered for use from 10 years of age and is only provided free for all
students who commence the course in Year 7 and boys only in Year 9.
South Grafton High School Newsletter 22 February 2013
3
This year’s schedule: Year 7 – all students – 25 February, 27 May and 22 October 2013
HPV vaccine – three doses Hepatitis B – two doses Chickenpox vaccine – one dose
Boostrix – Diphtheria, tetanus and whooping cough vaccination – one dose
Year 9 boys only – 26 February, 28 May and 22 October 2013 HPV vaccine – three doses
A parent information kit will be provided
which contains information about the vaccine and the disease that it protects against as well as a consent form.
A record of vaccination will be kept by the Public Health Unit and a copy will be provided
to the vaccinated student for their records. If your child’s vaccinations are not commenced in Year 7 or Year 9 (boys HPV
only) you can access this vaccine through your local doctor but the vaccine will not be
free of charge. Parent/guardians who wish to withdraw their consent for any reason may do so by writing to the school Principal.
Further information is available – phone Bernadette at the Public Health Unit on

Monday 18
February 2013
our school swimming
carnival was held after a wet start to the day. The
skies opened up early which lead
to a slight modification to the program. 2 of our novelty events had to
be cancelled and the carnival had a slight delay in its start time. After the starter gun
sounded for the first race it was all systems go. Thank you to all students who attended, they should be congratulated on a fantastic
day, everyone who attend seemed to enjoy themselves thoroughly. Numerous records
were broken during the day by Kiah Bennett. It’s good to see Kiah back in the pool swimming fast again. The final points score
after Monday was as follows: Alpha 691, Gamma 484, Delta 436 and Beta 385.
North Coast Cricket Our school currently has 3 girls Shinae Macdonald, Kayla Worthing and Natasha
Rudder, competing in the NSW CHS Open Girls Cricket Championships at Coffs Harbour.
The tournament has been rain affected all week, but that has not stopped the North Coast Girls from making the final. The final
results will be in next weeks newsletter. Congratulations girls.
Lunchtime comp
This week saw the commencement of our lunchtime Competitions. The indoor cricket competition has been scheduled for under the
COLA at lunchtimes with the exception of Wednesdays and an inline hockey
competition is set to commence in the hall. There is room for more teams to become involved in these competitions see Mr McKee
or Mr Dewberry in the PE staffroom for nomination sheets and more information.
