General information on Slovenian Railroad System

• Gauge: 1435 mm standard European gauge ( majority of Europe uses this as a “standard gauge” )

• 1229 kms of railways, 331 kms oout of this is double-track line.

• Electric system: 3 kV DC, except Dobova - HR border where 25kV 50 HZ AC, 503 kms are electrified

• Helsinki corridors V and X pass the country at Ljubljana

• Koper service route:

• Koper - Divaca - single track electrified - IntegRail uses 2 electro-locomotives for traction

• Divaca - Ljubljana Zalog - double-track, electrified, IntegRail uses 1 electro-locomotive

• Ljubljana Zalog - Pragersko - double-track electrified, IntegRail uses 1 diesel locomotive ( due to axle weight restrictions, electro-loco is too heavy for the section )

• Pragersko - Hodos HU/SI border - single track non-electrified, IntegRail uses 1 diesel locomotive

• Koper service route:

• Koper - Divaca - 1.350 mt / 500 meters

• Divaca - Ljubljana Zalog - 1.720 mt / 550 meters

• Ljubljana Zalog - Pragersko - 1.720 mt / 550 meters

• Pragersko - Hodos HU/SI border - 1.550 mt / 550 meters

• Comparison:

• HU MÁV traction allowance: 2.000 mt / 750 meters

Due to heavy terrains and the Alps, stations are short and have few tracks only. The picture indicates Zidani Most station which is one of the main stations on the Ljubljana - Maribor mainline

Hotpoints of IntegRail trains in Slovenia

• Koper - Divaca - 2 locomotives: 27 promille slope - extreme for railways

• Zidani Most - Sentjur section: 19 mt of allowed axle weight due to old rails ( only 48 kgs/m, overused trackbed - compare: normal axle weight: 22.5 mt / axle )

• Pragersko - Hodos - busy single track system, non-electrified

• Developments in 2013/14:

• Pragersko - Hodos trackbed and rail renovation, station reconstruction and signalling system deployment ( GSM-R )

• Pragersko - Hodos electrification for 3 kV DC - phase-switch station to HU system: Hodos
