Lines of Symmetry

What are Lines of Symmetry?

A shape is symmetrical when a line can be drawn through it, so that both sides of the line look exactly the same.

When an object has symmetry, we say that it is Symmetrical.

When an object does not have symmetry, we say it is Asymmetrical.

Shapes can have more than one line of symmetry.

This square has four lines of symmetry.

This rhombus has lines of symmetry.

This heart has one line of symmetry.

Let’s Play Symmetry Sort! Can you tell which objects are symmetrical and which are asymmetrical?

Hands On Activity!1. Select a partner to work with. 2. Each person fold a paper in half. 3. One student has to draw a simple shape or

object on one side of the paper. Their partner has to complete the shape on the other side of the fold.

4. It is now the other partner’s turn to draw.
