SUPPORT WEATHER AND CLIMATE SERVICES IN INDONESIA
Presented on CLIMAR-IV, 9-12 June, Asheville, USA
The Agency for Meteorology Climatology and Geophysic (BMKG)-Indonesia
OUTLINE
1. Background 2. Climate Drivers in Indonesia 3. BMKG Responsibility 4. Development of MIDAS-BMKG 5. MIDAS-BMKG Contribution for
Meteorology and Climate Services 6. Closure/Challenges
Coastline along 99.093 km (top 4th longest coastline after Canada, US and Russia)
Archipelagic country consist of 13.466 islands.
Flanked by Pacific and Indian Oceans.
The mountainous relief spans along from the north of Sumatra crossing the Java Island reaching the West Papua and stranded in the north of Sulawesi
1. Characteristic of precipitation affected by the oceans as well as its position to the equatorial line.
2. Originates three types of raining in Indonesia depending on the region i.e. monsoon, equatorial and local .
3. There are 342 seasonal zones in Indonesia due to these local characteristics.

MIDAS DEVELOPMENT
BMKG was held Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) in 2013 among the Providers and the Users of marine information at national level, resulting in the followings: 1. Commitment to establish national working
groups(Observation, Modeling, Product Information, Dissemination and Capacity Building) as a first step toward the establishment of Indonesian integrated ocean information system.
2. An agreement to develop Marine Integrated Data and Analysis System (MIDAS) as national portal of to support ocean climate data and information

POTENTIAL CAPACITY to SUPPORT MIDAS
No. AGENCIES POTENTIAL CAPACITY
1. BPPT (Agency for Assesment and Application Technology)
MIKE 21. TUNAMI. Have bathymetric data but only limited for research location Buoy data
2. PUSAIR (National Agency for Water Resource-Ministry of Public Work)
- have applied Jakarta FEWS , collaborating with BMKG,KNMI and Deltares
3. DISHIDROS (Hydrooceanic Office-Indonesian Navy)
- ENC (Electronic Navigation Chart) - Tide prediction
4. BIG (National Spatial Agency) - 115 tide gauge stations - Coastal laboratory in Jogjakarta for flood modelling - Landuse and land system map
5. BPOL KKP (Research and Development Center for Marine and Coastal Resources-Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries)
- HPC for running model in parallel.
6. LAPAN (National Aeronautic and Space Agency)

To increase the quantity of observations at Indonesian Sea, BMKG promote Voluntary Observing Ship (VOS) program in national level and installs Automatic Weather Station (AWS) at 11 commercial ships, resulting in real time observational data (http://maritim.bmkg.go.id/index.php/aws)
MARINE INFORMATION PRODUCT
MIDAS IMPLEMENTATION TOWARDS CIFDP-I
1. MIDAS is a national portal of marine/ocean climate data and information supported Coastal Inundation Forecasting Demonstration Project Indonesia (CIFDP-I).
2. All the activities categorized as Project preparation or phase 0 of CIFDP-I.
3. Recent activities, Indonesia was held National Stakeholders Workshop as the initial into Phase-I on 3-6 December 2013.
4. In October 2014, we plan to conduct the Phase 1 Review and Phase 2 Kick Off Implementation.
CIFDP-I: TIMELINE
NATIONAL STAKEHOLDERS WORKSHOP CIFDP-I JAKARTA- SEMARANG (3-6 DECEMBER 2013)
CLOSURE/CHALLENGES
1. There is a strong need to develop a national marine information portal as Indonesia as a maritime country.
2. Marine data are scattered in many agencies and developing a national portal need a strong commitments among the agencies.
3. MIDAS intends to provide integrated marine data and to support information services in Indonesia.
