A personal timeline of educational technology

Overview

My name is Raenette Anela Marino.

I started school in the 1960s here in Hawai’i.

I graduated from Ka’u High School in 1980.

I first went to college at Brigham Young University shortly after graduating from high school.

I graduated from the University of Hawai’i at Hilo with a Bachelor’s degree in English Literature.

I hope to become a middle school Language Arts teacher in East Hawai’i.

The use of tools, including digital technologies, that support and enhance

learning and teaching.

Kindergarten technologyI attended kindergarten in 1967 at Hilo Union

Elementary school. Today the kindergarteners at Hilo

Union enjoy computer technology in the classroom. But

when I was in kindergarten, there were no computers,

televisions, or projectors. Our teacher used a chalkboard

and we used pencils and paper.

High school technology

I attended Ka’u High School in the late 1970s. We

did not have any computers, but we did have:

Film and overhead projectors.

Electric typewriters.

Cassette players.

Televisions.

College technology When I first attended college in the early 1980s, we

were using MS-DOS on a big, bulky IBM-compatible computer in journalism class.

My term papers were done on my portable Olivetti typewriter.

By the time I went back to college in the early 2000s, we were computer saving our term papers in Word on floppy disks.

Currently, my graduate courses are exclusively on-line.

A vivid technology learning experience

Magic of television became real.

Watched Checkers & Pogo show daily.

Attended Checkers & Pogo television show.

Saw the cameras, crew, lights, in-studio audience, and Checkers and Pogo.

Saw myself on the television monitor.

It was exciting to see how the camera transmitted the images to the television.

A technology I want to use in my classroom

I would like to see every

student have their own iPad.

My vision of the classroom of the future

The walls of the classroom are SmartWalls. For example, one wall will be a computer

screen where the classroom is able to Skype and interact with another classroom across the globe.

A Challenge for Teaching Poverty is the number

one barrier. In 2006, nearly 18% of all children living in Hawaii county lived below the Federal Poverty Level. Recent figures show that it has risen to 20%.

Words of Wisdom
